Indian Men's Hockey Team secures Final berth at Asian Games with thrilling 5-3 victory over Korea

Hangzhou: The Indian Men's Hockey Team secured a spot in the Final of the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022, with a thrilling 5-3 win over Korea in the 1st Semi-Final on Wednesday. India will face the winner of the second Semi-Final between Japan and China in the Final of the tournament for a chance to win the Gold medal and secure a spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics. Hardik Singh (5'), Mandeep Singh (11'), Lalit Kumar Upadhyay (15'), Amit Rohidas (24'), and Abhishek (54') scored the goals for India to get the important win. Manjae Jung (17', 20', 42') scored a hat-trick for Korea.

Taking early lead and maintaining it all through, Harmanpreet Singh’s dream Indian XI made it to the Asian Games final, majestically. With opportunistic goal apiece from Hardik Singh, Mandeep Singh, and Lalit Kumar Upadhyay in the 5th, 11th and 15th minutes respectively, India took a commanding 3-0 lead in the first quarter.

The ghost of Jakarta was finally exorcised as the Indian men’s hockey team entered the Asian Games final and one step closer to an Olympic ticket here on Wednesday with a 5-3 win against South Korea but not before slipping up briefly and getting a scare. It will take on reigning champion Japan in the final after the latter beat China 3-2 to silence a capacity crowd in the other semifinal.

Asian Games men's hockey defending champion Japan will take three times champion India in the final of the 19th Asian Games 2022 at Gongshu Canal Sports Park Stadium, Hangzhou on 6 October 2023.
Yesterday, in the first semi final three times champion India defeated 4 times champion South Korea by a margin of 5 goals to 3. India was leading by 3-0 at the end of the first quarter and 4-0 at the half time. For the Indian team Hardik Singh, Mandeep Singh, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, Amit Rohidas and Abhishek each scored one goal. And for the losing South Korean team Man-jae Jung scored a hat trick.
In the second semi final the defending champion Japan shattered the dreams of the host China to go ahead, Japan defeated China by 3-2. For the Japan Ken Nagayoshi, Raiki Fujishima and Ryoma Ooka scored a goal each. For the Chinese team the goal scorers were Lin Changliang and Jiesheng Gao.
