Hockeyroos inflict shock shoot-out loss on Dutch, India wrap up campaign with victory over Los Leones



The Australian women produced the best possible response to a 7-2 trouncing at the hands of the Dutch three days earlier – playing a far better match and then edging the same opposition 2-1 in a shoot-out victory in FIH Hockey Pro League action in Eindhoven. In the men’s match, India wrapped up their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Argentina.

The Hockeyroos have shown huge resilience and fighting spirit to prevail over the world number one ranked Netherlands in a shootout after scores were locked 3-3 at full time.

Eindhoven: After a heart-break 2-3 loss to hosts The Netherlands on Saturday, India ensured they ended the FIH Hockey Pro League 2022-23 campaign with a 2-1 win against Argentina here in Eindhoven on Sunday. With this victory, India hold on to the top spot in the points table. Early goals by Akashdeep Singh (2') and Sukhjeet Singh (14') helped India control the proceedings while Lucas Toscani (58') scored Argentina's lone goal.

Akashdeep Singh and Sukhjeet Singh scored for the Indian men’s hockey team. With the win, India consolidated their position on top of the FIH Pro League standings.

India's first clash against Argentina in the FIH Pro League, Argentine defenders were left bamboozled after a gorgeous ball from Manpreet Singh which almost resulted in a goal. The next moment, he was diving to make a last-ditch tackle in his circle to save India's clean sheet.

Sudden Victory Challenge Shootout Win Gives USMNT 2023 Hockey5s PAC Gold

KINGSTON, Jamaica – It took a sudden victory challenge shootout round to decide the winner of the men’s 2023 Hockey5s Pan American Cups (PAC) final between the U.S. Men’s National Team and Trinidad and Tobago. Trailing early, USA responded in the first half and had to come from behind again in the second to close regulation at 2-2. After also being tied following three rounds of the challenge shootout, the Wolves claimed the win in the sudden victory round, 3-2.

T&T’s Calypso Stickmen had to settle for the silver medals after twice squandering the lead in a 2-2 draw with the USA before a 3-2 sudden-death penalty shoot-out defeat in the Pan American Hockey5s gold medal match at the University of the West Indies, Mona campus Turf, Kingston, Jamaica on Sunday night.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia claimed the fifth spot in Asia when they hammered Kazakhstan 7-0 in hockey's Junior Asia Cup in Kakamigahara, Japan, today.





India won both Men's and Women's Junior Asia Cups,  2023.

Indian women's hockey team defeated South Korea by 2-1 in the final of the Women's Hockey Junior Asia Cup 2023 at Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Hockey Stadium, Kakamigahara, Gifu, Japan.

The host, Japan won the bronze medal defeated China by the identical score 2-1.

A few days ago, Indian men's hockey team defeated Pakistan by the same score 2-1. South Korea won the bronze medal defeating Malaysia by 2-1 in the Men's Hockey Junior Asia Cup 2023, Salalah, Oman.

As much Women's Junior Asia Cup 2023 is concerned the top three teams of the tournament - India, South Korea and Japan qualified for the FIH Women's Junior World Cup 2023 at Santiago, Chile.

Federal govt releases Rs25m for hockey team’s India tour

KARACHI: The federal government has approved Rs25 million to help Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) bear the expenditure of the senior team's training for and participation in the Asian Champions Trophy 2023 to be held in Chennai, India, 'The News' learnt on Sunday.

Dar Academy beats Customs in Final of Naushad Kayani Memorial Hockey Tournament

Lahore: Olympic gold medallist Tauqeer Dar, the dynamic president of Pakistan`s finest hockey nursery Dar Hockey Academy, is always on the move. He organised a four day 7-a-side tournament at the APS Model High School Model Town Lahore's mini synthetic turf.

The event featured Lahore`s three premier hockey academies, Dar Academy, Rana Zaheer Academy and Khawaja Junaid Academy plus the recently reraised Pakistan Customs team.

It was titled Naushad Kayani Memorial 7-a-side Tournament. Major General Naushad Kayani passed away a few years back due to blood cancer. The late General was a keen hockey player and captained Divisional Public School, Lahore team with Tauqeer Dar as a team member.

All four participating sides included Pakistan internationals, senior or age group players.

After the single league, the top two sides, Dar HA and Pakistan Customs played the final.

Legendary full-back World Cup winner Maznoorul Hassan and the newly appointed manager of the Pakistan hockey team Col (retd) Umar Sabir graced the occasion.        
                      
The final was a thriller. Customs dominated the proceedings in the first half and went 2-0 ahead through goals by Mannan and Rana Sohail. Dar Academy staged a remarkable comeback and neutralised both goals via Awais and Abid Bhatti.

The final entered the penalty shootout where Dar Hockey Academy prevailed.

Statue erected before Hockey World Cup collapses in Odisha’s Rourkela

The statue was built by a Bhubaneswar-based firm at a cost of Rs 30.68 lakh. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had unveiled the statue ahead of the World Cup.

A 40-feet-high statue depicting an Indian hockey player erected in Rourkela city in Odisha’s Sundargarh district ahead of this year’s Men’s Hockey World Cup collapsed due to a thunderstorm on Sunday, officials said.
