NEW DELHI: The images of the Indian women's hockey team players sobbing inconsolably after their heartbreaking loss to Great Britain in their bronze medal playoff match at the Tokyo Olympics are still vivid in the minds of the fans.

Sjoerd Marijne, who was the coach of the men’s team before leading the women’s side to a historic fourth-place finish at the Olympics last year, has made this claim in his soon-to-be-released book titled 'Will Power'.

About four years ago, when Sjoerd Marijne, then coach of the Indian men’s hockey team, picked a teenage player to represent India at the Commonwealth Games, he was convinced a new star had been discovered. However, when the player flopped in Gold Coast, Marijne was “deeply mystified”. At first, he thought it was because of the pressure of playing in a major tournament. But later, he says, he got to know that captain Manpreet Singh had allegedly told the player “to stop playing so well”.

Dave Reid has retired after 32 years with Scottish Hockey as a coach. Dave has contributed in a variety of different roles down the years, most recently as a coach for Scotland men.

This weekend, Indiana field hockey will look to extend its five-game win streak against its first Big Ten opponent on the road. The weekend doubleheader begins against No. 5 Iowa at 5 p.m. Friday in Iowa City, Iowa before the team travels home to face Longwood University at 11 a.m. Sunday.





Former England Hockey player, 100, receives honorary degree after campaign



A 100-year-old former England women’s hockey player is thought to be the oldest living recipient to have received an honorary degree.
