Australia and India’s men both hit double-figures in their opening games of the tournament



Lausanne, Switzerland: New Zealand’s men got the day’s play underway with a comfortable showing against Pakistan, while Australia got their games title defence started with a massive victory over Scotland. The afternoon session started with a cracker between England and Wales men in which the hosts claimed a valuable three points, while India put 11 past Ghana. The evening began with a narrow England women’s win over Canada, with the day ended by a dominant Australia showing against South Africa.       





NZ Men back on track, Women grind out win



After their opening match against Scotland, the New Zealand men’s hockey team got their campaign back on track with a 4-1 win over Pakistan.

BIRMINGHAM: Pakistan’s hopes of getting closer to a semi-final berth took a hit when they were stunned 4-1 by New Zealand in their second Pool ‘A’ game of the Commonwealth Games hockey tournament on Sunday.

Birmingham — After three days “sitting around” waiting to play the opening game in the defence of their men’s title, Kookaburras were in no mood for Commonwealth pleasantries. Right on the hooter before their 12-0 victory over Scotland was confirmed, they even went upstairs to check the goal scored by Struan Walker.

Birmingham — Danny Newcombe, the Wales men’s coach, says his side need to play more matches against the top nations to arrest the hands-off scenario at the top of the rankings. Wales hope to change that during their six-month odyssey towards a first World Cup next January.





Indian Men Hockey Team Cut Ghana to Size



It was the first international match for the Indian men’s hockey team since their Pro League tie against the Netherlands on June 19, and the Graham Reid-coached side did not show any semblance of rustiness as they rode roughshod over Ghana 11-0 to make a statement of some magnitude.

The Indian men's hockey team decimated lowly Ghana 11-0 in its opening Pool B match of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Sunday. As expected, the Indians were relentless in their attacks and completely controlled the proceedings from start to finish.

Birmingham — England’s GB hockey players know all about stopping the country in its tracks. Mere minutes after Chloe Kelly had scored England’s winner at football’s Euro 2020, Anna Toman slapped home England’s opener against Canada. ‘It’s coming home!’ screamed a jubilant Fiona Crackles when The Hockey Paper later revealed the news after grinding out a 1-0 win.

The Hockeyroos have made it two from two with a commanding 5-0 victory over South Africa in their second pool match of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.





Second Half Blitz from Australia sees off South African Challenge



Australia underlined their credentials as tournament favourites with a no-nonsense display to emerge victorious against the South Africans thanks to an inspired second half display. Goals from Squib, Kershaw, Nobbs and Taylor were enough to seal the victory for the Oceania giants who would have been less pleased with the first half before delivering the knockout blow in the second half.

At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Amanda Woodcroft lined up with the Canadian Women’s Field Hockey Team beside her sister Nikki . Nikki has since retired from international duties, but in Birmingham, Amanda will be joined by her dad, Chris, manager of the Canadian wrestling team, and no less than a gold medalist himself in wrestling at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh.
