Las Leonas and Hockeyroos complete Women's World Cup semi-final line-up

A slick three-pass move that finished with Victoria Granatto slipping the ball past Maddie Hinch was the sole goal in a fascinating encounter between Argentina and England. While Las Leonas dominated possession, England put up a stalwart defence and were it not for two moments of goalkeeping brilliance from Belen Succi could have taken the game to shoot-out. Argentina will now face Germany in the semi-finals.

Indian Eves End Disappointing World Cup Campaign with Convincing Win over Japan

It has been a truly disappointing World Cup campaign for Olympic fourth-place finishers India – missing the quarterfinal bus would rankle the Janneke Schopman-coached Indian outfit for some time to come. Amidst the pall of disappointment, Indian hockey eves dished out the best performance in their last match of the World Cup, clawing their way from a second-quarter goal down to overwhelm Japan 3-1 at Terrassa. It was India who was calling the shots from the starting hooter – they regularly parked themselves in the opposition ‘D’ but goals eluded them as the Japanese defence held out firmly. Almost against the run of play, Japan pulled ahead with Yu Asai profiting from their first penalty corner with the ball taking a deflection off the first rusher.

How Appalling Penalty Conversions Derailed Indian Hockey Eves in 14th World Cup

Appalling penalty corner conversions have severely dented the Indian women’s hockey team’s World Cup campaign. It is perhaps the single biggest factor why the performance graph of the Indian hockey eves dipped sharply as the tournament wore on – the positives witnessed in the World Cup opener against England gave way to a consistent tale of missed scoring chances as well as exuding impression of running out of ideas in the opposition ‘D’. Surprisingly, India scored a nifty short corner goal via Vandana Katariya off an indirect variation to equalise against England but that’s the only one they converted out of seven penalty corners they earned. Vandana Katariya was again at hand to score another indirect variation off a shortie as India restored parity against China in their second tie, but they missed four PCs as well.

Terrassa — With 14 seconds remaining, in a frantic denouement to an otherwise stale, cagey knock-out encounter, the ball fell to Sophie Hamilton after a flourishing stick to ball run from the masterful Lily Owsley. The 21-year-old had the goal at her mercy. She even had time to semi-trap and a tap-in seemed at her mercy.
