Germany men finish on a high; Belgium men and women do double over India

Heartbreak for USA as Spain grab late winner and Netherlands women outclass Germany

It was a day of drama, late goals, sublime skills, mesmerising teamwork and magnificent individual performances. As the FIH Hockey Pro League nears its final stages, the hockey action on offer has reached extraordinary levels. Whether it is the sheer power of a Stephanie vanden Borre penalty corner, the precision of a Xan de Waard pass or the teamwork that led to the India men's opening goal, the choice of best moments runs long following this weekend of hockey.

Germany's men finished their International Hockey Federation (FIH) Pro League campaign on a high with victory over The Netherlands, while Belgium, The Netherlands and Spain also won on a bumper day of fixtures.

ANTWERP, Belgium – In their second FIH Hockey Pro League game of the weekend at the Sportcentrum Wilrijkse Plien in Antwerp, Belgium, the No. 15 U.S. Women’s National Team and No. 7 Spain battled until the end. After USA held the lead twice, Spain came from behind in the final minutes to defeat the red, white and blue, 3-2.

What a game !!! In the end it was 4:1 for the Honamas in Hamburg in the second game in the FIH Pro League this weekend against the Netherlands. In the revenge for the defeat of the day before, the spectators saw a dominant German team, especially in the second half, which gave the leaders of the FIH Pro League no chance. The goals for the German team – after Koen Bijen was 0:1 behind in the 3rd minute – were scored by Moritz Ludwig (31st minute), Marco Miltkau (36th minute), Niklas Bosserhoff (47th minute) and Constantin Staib ( 49 minutes).

The Red Lions Are on the Rise

The balance of the weekend is positive for the Olympic champions who showed a lot of pugnacity and quality against a very sharp Indian team. Two encounters from which Michel van den Heuvel will certainly draw many lessons.

Scintillating Indian Men Go Down to Belgium

It was a hockey match that was a spectators’ delight – coast-to-coast action something hockey lovers desire to see. And at the end of it, it was olympic and world champions Belgium who had the last laugh, sneaking past Olympic bronze medallists India by the odd goal in five to leapfrog to second spot in the Pro League points table. India clearly have made positive progress since losing 2-5 to the Red Lions in the 2021 Olympic semifinals and matched the hosts for most part of the match. A brilliant teamwork saw India open the scoring close to half-time – Lalit Upadhyay brought all his experience to bear and orchestrated a superb combined effort with Gurjant Singh that saw Abhishek put the ball in the Belgium goal – a goal that helped the Blueshirts gain the pyschological advantage of staying ahead at half-time.

Control and Efficiency for the Panthers Against India

Belgium achieved a magnificent 6/6 this weekend in the Pro League. Enough to confirm its evolution but above all the legitimate ambitions that the team has for the next World Cup which will start in 3 weeks in Spain and the Netherlands.

Belgium Turn On The Style Against Indian Women!

Belgium women’s hockey team appears to be taking a leaf out of their men’s team book. Of course, they are not a world or Olympic champion like their men counterparts but surely they are a rapidly-improving women’s hockey outfit and much ‘better’ than their world number eight ranking suggests. The Red Panthers haven’t done much of note on the international stage if their performances in major FIH tourneys over the last decade or so is anything to go by. Belgium eves had finished last 11th among twelve teams at the 2012 London Olympics, and was subsequently out of the Olympic programme in 2016 and 2021. They had finished last at the 2014 World Cup at The Hague and settle for 10th position at the 2018 World Cup.

The Indian women's team had a forgettable day in office as it received a sound 0-5 thrashing at the hands of Belgium in a FIH Pro League match here on Sunday.

Hockey at Olympics: The emergence of 5s raises questions over future of traditional 11-a-side game

With the five-a-side format gaining acceptability and IOC keen to make the Games leaner to reduce the cost burden on host cities, conventional hockey has a challenge on its hands. Will the 2028 Olympics feature 5s, the gold old 11s or both?

by Mihir Vasavda

Hockey 5s, five-a-side formatWhen hockey shifted from grass to artificial turf in the 1970s, the fundamental nature of the sport remained the same. In 5s, the game as we know it is virtually unrecognisable.

As far as hockey venues go, this one was novel.

A drop-in turf in the city-centre, on the shores of a lake, boats anchored on the marina on one side, surrounded by giant trees with mountains in the distance and a host city that has zero hockey tradition or history, apart from being home to the suits that govern the game.

The future is already here

The FIH Hockey5s Lausanne 2022, the first-ever senior world five-a-side event organised by the body, hit the right chord with masses

The men’s team’s emphatic title victory at the inaugural Hockey 5s tournament capped off an exciting experience for India. While the women’s team failed to reach the final, the men adapted quickly to find success in their first proper foray into the five-a-side format.
