Harmanpreet stars again as India blank Germany

An experienced Indian team gave a dominant attacking and defensive performance to outclass their young German counterparts in a thrilling game that saw non-stop attacking action throughout the 60 minutes. Penalty Corners once again proved to be India’s greatest ally as they converted from 3 of their 6 opportunities from the set pieces. Harmanpreet got the first two goals, taking his season tally to 16 goals, with player of the match Abhishek getting the 3rd goal, by getting a deflection on another Harmanpreet penalty corner attempt.

Harmanpreet Singh scored a double to help India towards another win in the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Pro League, defeating Germany 3-0 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.

Coming into a match as firm favourites is a tricky proposition. Especially against German opposition said to be second string. But India did as Harmanpreet Singh said before the match and that was to focus on themselves. Surely enough, at the end of the first match of the FIH Pro League doubleheader, the scoreline read 3-0 to the hosts at the iconic Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Thursday.

India Assert Superiority over Disappointing Germany

It was far from being a stroll in the pitch for the inexperienced Germans against the might of India. The Honamas were sans the services of several key players such as regular captain Mat Grambusch, Niklas Wellen, Christopher Ruhr, Gonazlo Peillat, and Lukas Windfeder. The Andre Henning-coached side struggled to express themselves as the early exchanges bordered on mediocrity before the match came to life with India gradually taking the attack to the opposition. The lack of firepower of the Germans was amply evident as India outplayed them to pull off a 3-0 win and now are firmly perched on top of the standings with 24 points from 11 matches.

Savita Punia: ‘I am what I am because of my team’

Savita Punia produced her best in the Indian women’s hockey team’s quarterfinal triumph over the mighty Australians at the Tokyo Olympics. In a chat with Sportstar, she reflects on her journey and her goals for what is another important year for the team.

Aashin Prasad

Timeless: Savita Punia, 31, still has some unfinished business and wants to continue playing. “Age is not an issue for a goalkeeper The chief coach (Janneke Schopman) says as long as you are fit, reflexes are fast and you feel like you are performing at a high level, you keep going.”   -  BISWARANJAN ROUT

For Savita Punia, the fourth-placed finish at the Tokyo Olympics last year was a culmination of four years of toil to overcome the pain of the group-stage exit in Rio.
