Ukraine, due to have played the opening match against Ireland at the postponed International Hockey Federation (FIH) Women’s Junior World Cup in the South African town of Potchefstroom, have been unable to make the trip.

Considering what they endured before fleeing their country, and then the nature of their evacuation before reaching their place of refuge, it always seemed improbable that Ukraine would be in any fit state to compete at the Junior World Cup in South Africa, where they were due to play Ireland in their opening game on Sunday.





South African Junior Women looking to capitalise on home soil



For the first time ever a FIH Hockey World Cup will take place on African Soil. The 9th edition of the FIH Junior World Cup is being competed in Potchefstroom between 15 nations from across the world. For the South African team its an opportunity to take advantage of playing on home turf and Lenise Marais and her team will be looking to emulate or better the 6th place finish the team achieved in 2001 in Argentina.

The “long” wait for the junior women’s teams is “finally” over. Four months after it was postponed due to Covid-19, the FIH Women’s Junior World Cup begins in Potchefstroom, South Africa, tomorrow. Originally scheduled for December 5-16, the tournament was postponed due to the emergence of Omicron. The unwanted delay has led to an increased level of nervous excitement among the players. “The long wait finally ends for us. There is a lot of excitement among the players,” India captain Salima Tete said.

She captained India to a bronze medal finish in the 2013 Women's Junior Hockey World Cup and veteran Sushila Chanu feels the Salima Tete-led side has the potential to go two steps further and claim a maiden gold in the edition that begins on Friday.

Nkuliso “Inky” Zondi refuses to take credit for the success of the South African women’s national hockey team. Under his tutelage as interim coach, the senior women’s side won the Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana in January, beating the hosts in the final.
