SPAR South Africa level series with solid win

After Ireland captain Chloe Brown had struck with a late goal to give the Irish their first Indoor Hockey Test Match victory against SPAR South Africa, the two sides met for the second test tonight in Dublin. For SPAR South Africa the lack of cutting edge was massively disappointment having been the dominant force in the opening test and they were looking to be far more clinical in the second test.

South Africa levelled the SPAR Indoor Hockey Series as they won an eight-goal cracker at Gormanston Park with Danielle de Oliveira and Eloise Walters firing home on the double.

The Spanish women's hockey team arrived here on Tuesday ahead of its two-legged FIH Pro League matches against India on February 26 and 27. Spain suffered a defeat in their opening match of the tournament at home against the Netherlands (0-1) but managed to push their second game against the Dutch to a shootout (after a 2-2 stalemate) where they lost.

Performing consistently in the domestic circuit is one thing and earning a maiden international call-up is quite another. Sukhjeet Singh must be as pleased as punch on his inclusion in the Indian men’s hockey team for the Pro League games against Spain. The 25-year-old Jallandhar lad forced his way into the national fold with a string of solid performances for Punjab National Bank in the domestic circuit. Sukhjeet’s call-up means that for the first time ever the national team features four players from Punjab National Bank – the other three being Olympian Shamsher Singh, Mandeep Mor and another recent new entrant Abhishek.

George Black

Scottish Hockey is deeply saddened to hear that George Black of Stepps Hockey Club has passed away. George was Scottish Hockey’s oldest member and was well known to many in hockey – he represented Scotland on 48 occasions and Great Britain three times; he was a non-travelling reserve for the 1964 Olympics; and he has travelled the world playing hockey.
