Spain look forward to 'cameras and action'

Josep or Pepe Romeu is a long-standing member of the Spanish men’s national team. With 139 caps to his name, the athlete was part of the squad that won silver at the 2019 EuroHockey Championships, a target the team would love to emulate at this year’s competition.

With Spain sitting in ninth positioning the FIH Hockey Pro League, the Red Sticks would love to finish their campaign with some winning results and a shift up the table but, as the defender explained, a more important factor than points is the way the team performs.

“We see these Pro League matches as a preparation for the EuroHockey Championships and Olympic Games, so we have to try new things, such as new outlets and new defensive systems. We are also playing with some new, young guys who are really good. It is important for us to get used to playing together and get into a good shape for everything that is coming.”

Spain’s Pro league schedule has been hit hard by the pandemic. The last time the team played was in February, when they suffered two close defeats at the hands of Belgium. Last month they should have played Australia and India.Romeuexplains they have just had to accept the situation and pour their energy into training.

“It is always important to compete against the top teams. It has been difficult because we were expecting to play Australia and India, so we have been doing a lot of physical training and preparing as well as we can for matches that we can play.”

Looking ahead to the competition this weekend,Romeuis expecting two tough matches.

“Great Britain are in good shape now. They beat Germany twice so it will be a tough couple of games. They are really intense and play a very physical game. They play at 100 per cent during the whole game, they never let that intensity slide and they have some excellent players, such as Phil Roper and Sam Ward, so they can score easily. Also, their defence, especially at penalty corners, is very good.

“We are trying to be in good physical shape for the matches. They are two consecutive matches and it is not easy to play two games in two days, so we are putting together a good plan to do well in both games.”

Romeu’s excitement at the prospect of international hockey is palpable. At the Lee Valley Hockey Stadium in London there will be cameras and a small crowd. He says this is an important factor both for the players but also for the professionalism of the sport.

“Playing international games is the best way to prepare. We love to play in the FIH Pro League with the cameras and crowds because it makes hockey more professional.”

The Spanish national men’s team take on Great Britain on the 22 and 23 May at the Lee Valley Hockey Stadium in London.

GB Men hope to keep up the ante

S2H Team

Great Britain men will attempt to keep up their new-found form in their FIH Pro League double header against Spain at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in London on Saturday.

GB beat Germany in their double header convincingly 10 days ago with 5-3 and 3-1 victories that saw them climb from bottom of the nine-nation league to sixth spot. The hosts have played 10 matches, have collected 11 points and have recorded a percentage success of 36.67, a number that may determine final standings should the league fail to be played out in its entirety because of the Covid-19 pandemic’s impact.

Spain are languishing at the bottom, having played 10 matches as well but earning only seven points at a percentage success of 23.33. The ravaged schedule that saw a spate of postponements has meant that Spanish haven’t played a match since February 6 when they lost to Belgium 0-2 in their second encounter, having lost 2-3 the day before.

Belgium, the World Cup and European champions, lead the table with 32 points from 19 matches at 82.05%. Germany are second with 19 from 10 at 63.33.

The first match will be held at 1730 IST and the second, on Sunday, at 1630 IST.

The GB women play the USA later on the same days. Curiously, the teams are identically placed on the table as in the men’s encounters. GB are sixth while the US are at the bottom of the nine-nation league. GB, the Olympic champions, have 14 points from 10 matches at 46.67%. The Americans have drawn a blank from eight matches.

The first match will be played at 2000 IST on Saturday, the second at 1900 IST, Sunday.

FIH Pro League Scouting Report: USWNT vs. Great Britain

What You Need to Know: The second match on both days following the men's Great Britain and Spain, will see Great Britain women going head-to-head with USA, a team that journeys to London on the back of a brace of FIH Hockey Pro League defeats at the hands of Belgium in Antwerp last weekend. Head coach Anthony Farry is very much at the start of the rebuilding process with this young and inexperienced USA team, and the fixtures against the Red Panthers will have provided the Australian tactician with plenty of learnings about a group that included six international debutants.

It goes without saying that USA are at the start of a long journey of evolution, but with Farry - the man who guided Japan’s women to the Asian Games title in 2018 - at the helm, you can be sure that the group will be given the tools they need in order to make rapid progress. Two matches against the reigning Olympic champions - a team coached by Farry’s compatriot Mark Hager and that claimed three points from a potential six against Germany at home last week - can only serve to assist that process. Team GB will certainly prove a stern test, with the hosts regarded as clear favorites coming into this double header.

Game 1 Rosters:
USA: Madeleine Bacskai, Mary Beth Beiler, Kelsey Bing, Kelsey Briddell, Linnea Gonzales, Danielle Grega, Alexandra Hammel, Karlie Heistand, Laura Hurff, Amanda Magadan, Lauren Moyer, Alyssa Parker, Haley Randall, Miranda Rigg, Kealsie Robles, Taylor West, Nicole Woods, Elizabeth Yeager

Great Britain: Giselle Ainsley, Grace Balsdon, Amy Costello, Fiona Crackles, Sarah Evans, Sabbie Heesh, Maddie Hinch, Sarah Jones, Shona McCallin, Lily Owsley, Hollie Pearne-Webb, Isabelle Petter, Elena Rayer, Sarah Robertson, Anna Toman, Susannah Townsend, Laura Unsworth, Leah Wilkinson

Batra and Coudron to go head-to-head in virtual FIH Presidential election

By Geoff Berkeley

Narinder Batra is seeking to retain his place at the head of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) as he faces Belgian challenger Marc Coudron in tomorrow’s Presidential election.

Batra, also President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member, is seeking a second term as FIH President after first being elected in 2016.

But the Indian official will need to overcome the challenge of Royal Belgian Hockey Association (KBHB) President Coudron who has played an instrumental role in the rise of Belgium on the global stage.

The election is due to take place remotely after the FIH abandoned plans to stage a hybrid Congress in New Delhi because of the COVID-19 crisis in India.

Coudron is the treasurer and an Executive Board member of the Belgian Olympic and Interfederal Committee as well as a private banker.

The 51-year-old remains Belgium’s most-capped international hockey player of all time, having made 358 appearances for his country.

Coudron has also played a key role in helping Belgium compete on the world stage after becoming the head of the KBHB in 2005.

Under his leadership, Belgium’s men’s team qualified for the Olympics for the first time in 32 years at Beijing 2008 before earning silver at Rio 2016, winning the 2018 World Cup and clinching gold at the 2019 European Championships.

The women’s team also made their Olympic debut at London 2012.

With his Presidency at KBHB due to expire next month, Coudron believes now is the ideal time to contest for the top job at the FIH.

Royal Belgian Hockey Association President Marc Coudron, right, has spoken of his desire to improve the FIH's financial situation should he replace Narinder Batra as head of the organisation ©Getty Images

Earlier this year, insidethegames revealed the FIH had lost more than CHF633,000 (£498,000/$702,000/€578,000) in 2019, more than doubling its 2018 deficit.

The accounts, which predate the COVID-19 crisis, said TV production costs for the Hockey Pro League "were underestimated while, at the same time, revenues from broadcasting deals were overestimated".

Coudron, a member of the FIH Executive Board between 2010 and 2018, has targeted increased investment from sponsors and believes it is crucial the organisation signs a top-tier partner sooner rather than later to help arrest its financial decline.

"We have to get financial sustainability for the FIH, that is among the main priorities," Coudron said.

"The situation is not the fault, mistake or responsibility of the current President and Executive Board members, but for the moment the FIH has big financial problems and we have to resolve that."

Adapting the Hockey Pro League format is one of his other suggestions to help address the "huge gap" between the so-called bigger nations and the rest, along with creating another competition to give those outside of the top 10 more exposure and playing time.

Batra has cut a controversial figure at times during his reign as FIH President and has been accused of not dedicating enough time to the position.

His critics believe he has prioritised his role as head of the IOA - which is linked to his IOC membership.

Batra has pledged to "harmonise" hockey's global calendar and increase the visibility of the sport ©Getty Images

Batra has unveiled 11 key targets he has pledged to achieve if he is re-elected to the position tomorrow.

Enhancing financial sustainability, increasing the visibility of the sport and starting to work with esports and gaming platforms are among the main aims set out by Batra in his manifesto.

Batra insists his top priority is to develop the sport and has also vowed to "harmonise" hockey's global calendar and improve the its Olympic status.

"I believe that it's very important for us to develop media [digital and broadcast] rights as a strong source of revenue," Batra writes in his manifesto.

"This added to sponsor revenues are capable of leading us to the path of healthy sustainable financial stability."

Batra’s first term was extended after the FIH delayed the Congress to this year, from 2021, but a second will be shortened from four years to three due to the postponement should he win the election.

"I hereby commit to engage all necessary efforts to fight the challenges coming our way and seize every opportunity to grow hockey, both in terms of participants and fans, as this is so crucial to generate the resources we need to make our sport flourish,"  Batra said.

The FIH has appointed an independent notary from British firm Cheeswrights Scrivener Notaries LLP who will chair and oversee the election process.

As well as the Presidential election, the Congress is set to see members vote on the admission of The Gambia, Saudi Arabia and Timor Leste as full members and statute changes to extend its powers to cover virtual or esports activities and competitions in the sport

There will also be a decision to approve the use of gender-neutral terms in the FIH statutes.

Max Caldas heads to Spain as hockey coaches secure positions

Dutch men's coach Max Caldas, left, and Billy Bakker will be chasing gold in Tokyo PIC: Worldsportpics

Max Caldas has been unveiled as the new Spanish men’s coach following the Tokyo Olympics.

Argentinian Caldas, 48, announced he was leaving Oranje men last year.

He will take over from Fred Soyez, the Frenchman who leaves after seven years as national coach. He is mooted as the next France coach, who will see Jeroen Delmee leave after next month’s EuroHockey.

In a neat case of coaching musical chairs, Delmee will replace Caldas as Dutch men’s coach.

Caldas will become the first Argentinian to coach a Spanish national side.

“We have chosen a very successful and prestigious coach, who will certainly bring us many successes,” the Spanish hockey federation said.

Meanwhile, Germany women’s coach Xavier Reckinger has extended his contract with the German Hockey Association until the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The 36-year-old Belgian took over from Jamilon Mülders in 2017 and last year led the Danas to third in the FIH Pro League and EuroHockey runners-up.
