The first phase of the 2026 Masters Hockey World Cup has wrapped up in Rotterdam and Schiedam, with New Zealand teams producing a number of strong performances across the 35s to 50s age groups.

FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Format: A new pathway to the semi-finals



New Delhi: With the FIH Hockey Men’s and Women’s World Cup 2026 set to be jointly hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands from 15 to 30 August, the removal of the quarter-final stage has given the tournament a new pathway to the title.



Hockey World Cup 2026: What is the new format and how does it work?

While the 16 teams will be divided into four groups of four, there will be no quarterfinals stage, which had a short-lived existence in only the 2018 and 2022/2023 editions.

The upcoming FIH Men’s and Women’s World Cups in Belgium and the Netherlands will be played under a new three-stage format, making the league phase even more crucial as points earned in the opening round will be carried forward to the next stage. That is, the result achieved against a team played in the league counts for the final ranking in the new pool in the next phase.

The FIH World Cup 2026 begins August 15 and will be played across two venues: the Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre, Belgium, and the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands. Both venues had Poligras artificial turf installed shortly before the start of the two-week tournament.
