Just a win, nothing fancy

By Jugjet Singh

IT WAS a jittery 60 minutes for Malaysia but they went on to beat Bangladesh 3-0 in the curtain raiser of the World League Round Two hockey tournament in Dhaka, Bangladesh Saturday.

Only the finalists will move on to the World League Semifinals, and Malaysia face Oman on Sunday where a win is also expected.

Ranked 13th in the World, Malaysia started the count when Marhan Jalil slapped in from close range in the fifth minute.

But the first quarter ended without anymore goals, as Malaysia bungled a penalty corner and also three sitters.

Razie Rahim scored off Malaysia's second penalty corner in the 19th minute, and Aiman Nik Rosemi made it 3-0 in the 54th minute for full points.

Malaysia down hosts Bangladesh in Group A opener

by S. Ramaguru

Solid strike: Malaysia’s Mohd Razie Rahim (right) scored a goal in the 19th minute against Bangladesh in the World Hockey League Round Two Group A match at the Moulana Bhasani National Hockey Stadium in Dhaka yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia did just enough to beat hosts Bangladesh 3-0 to get their World Hockey League Round Two Group A campaign off to a winning start at the Moulana Bhasani National Hockey Stadium in Dhaka.

The top-seeded Malaysians got their goals through Mohd Marhan Mohd Jalil (fifth minute), Mohd Razie Rahim (19th) and Nik Aiman Nik Rozemi (54th).

Malaysia have now won 13 and drawn one in 14 clashes against Bangladesh.

National coach Stephen van Huizen, however, admitted that his men could have played better.

He also said that the objective after they took a two-goal lead was to keep the opponents from scoring.

“When we were 2-0 up at half-time, I told them to settle down and not let Bangladesh score as it would restore their confidence and make them much harder to beat.

“Anyway, we came here to win all our matches ... and not to score dozens of goals in every match,” he said.

Bangladesh coach Oliver Kurts admitted that “we did not expect to beat Malaysia”.

“We knew their strength ... but played better than expected. We are looking for full points from our next matches to finish second in the group,” said the German.

World No. 13 Malaysia will take on world No. 31 Oman in their second group match today.

Oman hammered Fiji 7-0 in their opening game.

Stephen agreed that his players will have to show an improved performance against Oman.

“If you ask my coaching staff and the players, they will surely tell you that the performance against Bangladesh was way below par ... that we did just enough,” said Stephen.

“Bangladesh played open hockey, but we missed a handful of sitters and that made them more confident. That’s something we cannot do in our next two matches.”

Stephen said that they go for early goals against Oman.

Malaysia have a good record against Oman – having won all 11 clashes.

The teams last met in the World Hockey League Round Two in Singapore in 2015 and Malaysia won 7-0.

India-Pakistan hockey likely in ‘neutral’ Oman if FIH has its way

If the international hockey federation (FIH) has its way, India and Pakistan may be playing each other as part of a series of bilateral matches in Oman in 2019.

The FIH is introducing a new world league in 2019, replacing the biennial Champions League, which will have teams from the top eight countries playing a series of matches on home and away basis. The winner and runners-up of this tournament will qualify for the corresponding World Cup or Olympics.

With teams reluctant to travel to Pakistan citing security concerns, the FIH has proposed Oman as a neutral venue for their ‘home’ matches. The India versus Pakistan matches, as part of this new competition, are being offered to generate interest for the new league. FIH hopes that such matches will be telecast to over hundred countries and help in spreading the sport.

The idea of Oman capital Muscat as a neutral venue for Pakistan’s ‘home’ matches was mooted by FIH president Narinder Batra, who was on a visit to the Sultanate of Oman this week.

“The International Hockey Federation (FIH) is actively considering Oman as the neutral venue for India-Pakistan matches with the Sultanate acting as the home venue for security-concerned Pakistan,” the Oman Daily Observer said in a report.

“The idea is to have Pakistan’s home matches in Oman. Under the present circumstances, the foreign teams are unwilling to tour Pakistan due to security concerns. So it is better we find a neutral venue for Pakistan and Oman suits well to that option with its interest and following in hockey,” the newspaper quoted Batra as saying in an exclusive interview.

“Eight countries will visit Oman to play Pakistan and India-Pakistan matches will be the highlight of the matches,” he said.

The home and away series is an ambitious project of the FIH and is expected to promote more bilateral exchanges between top countries. Unlike cricket which thrives on bilateral matches, such ‘test matches’ in hockey don’t have official sanction and are not part of the international federation’s calendar.

This proposal by Dr Batra projects a major shift in stand by the FIH chief who as Hockey India president had broken bilateral ties with Pakistan and vowed not to revive test series between the two countries till Pakistan Hockey Federation formally apologised for the alleged indecent behavior by its players after their win against India in the Champions Trophy in Bhubaneswar in 2014.

India last played Pakistan in a bilateral series in 2006 when the two countries hosted three matches each. Since then the two countries have met only in multi-national competitions organised by international bodies, the last such clash coming in the Asian Champions Trophy in October 2016.

Investec Women’s Conference East

Wimbledon remain three points clear at the top of the Investec Conference East after a 3-1 home win over Southgate.

The visitors led at the break thanks to a Caitlin Wales goal, but the hosts hit back in the second through Nicola Lloyd, Great Britain Olympic Gold Medallist Crista Cullen and Harriet Naismith.

Lily Elliott converted a hat trick of penalty corners as Sevenoaks won 5-0 against Chelmsford to keep up the chase at the top of the table.

Hampstead and Westminster moved third after an emphatic 9-0 win against bottom club Northampton Saints, Louise Radford and Michelle Borren both scoring hat tricks.

Sally Goodman scored the game’s only goal as Belper now sit just three points behind Timperley with three games to play.

Brooklands Poynton remain four points clear at the top of the table after a 5-0 win at Wakefield, Helen Turner scoring two.

Investec Women’s Conference West

Buckingham shut out Investec Conference West top scorers Stourport, registering a 2-0 away victory to move above them at the top of the table.

The two sides started the day separated only by goal difference, but strikes from Natasha James and Abbie Brant secured what could be a pivotal three points for the visitors.

Buckingham have only conceded seven league goals this season, and now look favourites to qualify for the promotion play offs.

Elsewhere, Sally Walton took her tally for the season to 14 with a brace as Olton and West Warwicks beat Isca 2-1

Joanne Westwood scored twice as Swansea City beat struggling Bristol Firebrands 3-0.

Nur Insafi need shootout to take out gutsy Politeknik

KUALA LUMPUR: Division One champions Nur Insafi needed a penalty shootout to check into the President’s Cup semi-finals – and keep their hopes of a double alive.

Nur Insafi defeated Politeknik Malaysia-KPT 3-2 in a penalty shootout after both teams were tied 2-2 in regulation time during their President’s Cup quarter-final, second-leg match at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Johor Baru yesterday.

The teams had also drawn 1-1 in the first leg on Thursday.

Yesterday, Politeknik took the lead in the 12th minute off a field goal by Mohd Shazwi Rani.

Nur Insafi equalised in the 26th minute through Nur Raahul Hrsikesa before Mohamed Aleeq put them 2-1 up in the 31st minute.

Politeknik then made it 2-2 with a 52nd-minute goal by Khairul Helmy Napi.

But luck deserted them in the shootout.

Nur Insafi will face RMAF Rajawali in the last four.

RMAF drew 1-1 with Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) at the Subang Hockey Stadium yesterday but still go through 3-2 on aggregate.

RMAF won the first-leg tie 2-1.

The other semi-final will be between Division One runners-up Police and UPM-KPT.

Police qualify for the last four in style – with a 10-4 aggregate win over Johor. Having won the first-leg clash 7-3, Police had no problem winning the return leg 3-1.

Police got their goals through Mohd Rahimi Iskanda, S. Baljit Singh and Faizal Reza Mohd Noor while Johor got their consolation goal through Mohd Nor Hafiq Abdul Ghaffar.
