Brazil played strong defense to keep Chile from scoring until the 28th minute, but Chile comes away with 8-0 win over Brazil; and Paraguay and host Peru battled in an excitingly close match with the game winner by Paraguay’s María Catebra Martinez in the 68th minute on Day 3 of the Women’s South American Championship / Hockey World League Round 1

All matches are being live-streamed; and a reminder that each match is being played in two 35 minute halves and cannot end in a tie.

On the third day of the Women’s Competition, Brazil and Chile met; and Paraguay and host Peru

Paraguay-Peru (1-0)

Both Paraguay and Peru were looking for their first win of the tournament. The match started with both teams fighting for and trading possession largely in the midfield. Paraguay had the first scoring opportunity of the match in the 7th minute, but Peru worked hard defensively as a team to quickly clear the ball out of the circle. Two minutes later, it was Peru who earned the first penalty corner of the match and the shto by Yurandi Quino was saved by Paraguay’s keeper Claudia Flores Guillen. Paraguay’s Lorena Alvarez then had a shot on goal saved by Peru’s keeper Chiara Conetta.

After continuing to battle for possession for about ten minutes in the first half, Paraguay was awarded their first penalty corner of the match. The shot went just wide of the goal cage to keep the match scoreless. Paraguay then earned another penalty corner, but the shot by Nicole van Jaarsveld was saved by Conetta. A few minutes later, Paraguay had another opportunity to score off a penalty corner, but Conetta was again there for the save.  Paraguay maintained their attacking pressure. Peru’s Malen Moccagatta received a green card in the 28th minute. Paraguay was unable to take advantage during Peru’s green card. While Paraguay continued to pressure on attack for the rest of the first half, Peru played strong defense to keep the match scoreless at halftime.

Paraguay kept up their attacking pressure to start the second half. Conetta came out to make saves against shots by van Jaarsveld and Sara Rodriguez to keep Paraguay from taking the lead. In the 42nd minute, van Jaarsveld had one of Paraguay’s best shots on goal from the top left side of the circle, but the shot went just wide of the goal cage. The Paraguay fans in the stands got loud; and the Peru fans started to cheer loudly. Paraguay kept attacking; and Conetta made another big save on a shot by Carolina Cacace Vely. In the 45th minute, Paraguay earned the first penalty corner of the second half. Captain Olga Spiridonoff’s shot was saved by Conetta, but Paraguay kept forcing play in their attacking circle. Two minutes later, Paraguay had another good scoring opportunity off a penalty corner shot by Cacace Vely, but the shot just missed the goal cage.

Soon after, Peru earned its first penalty corner of the second half and the crowd roared. Peru, however, was unable to complete the penalty corner play and the match remained scoreless.  Paraguay kept up their attacking pressure; with van Jaarsveld and María Catebra Martinez constantly trying to run with the ball on attack. Despite a loud crowd cheering for Peru, Paraguay kept attacking and Cacace Vely had another shot saved by Conetta to keep the match scoreless. For the next few minutes play was back in Peru’s attacking half as Ximena Ardiles and Quino looked to generate scoring opportunities. Paraguay went back on attack and a hard shot by van Jaarsveld let to a penalty corner for Paraguay in the 66th minute. Paraguay successfully completed the penalty corner as Catebra Martinez found the back of the net to give Paraguay the lead in the 68th minute and silence the crowd. Peru tried to run onto attack off the restart, but Paraguay regained possession. A last minute effort by Peru in their attacking half was not enough and Paraguay came away with their first tournament victory with the one goal win over host Peru.

Brazil-Chile (0-8)

The match started with play in Chile’s attacking half. Chile earned the first penalty corner in the third minute, but the pass out went far outside the circle. Soon after, Chile earned two more penalty corners, but Brazil played good team defense to block the two penalty corner shots by Chile. Brazil had their first attacking opportunity in the 7th minute when Brazil’s Mayara Fedrizzi and Tatiana Noronha Machado got the ball into their attacking circle, but could not get a shot off after passing between each other.

After Brazil and Chile spent the next eight minutes battling for possession mostly in the midfield, Brazil earned their first penalty corner of the math in the 15th minute. Chile’s Fernanda Flores and Denise Krimerman made defensive saves to stop the penalty corner play by Jacqueline Peyloubet and Fedrizzi. Brazil’s Luciana Peralta and Noronhna Machado then played strong defense to keep Chile from being able to take a shot in their attacking circle. Both teams continued to battle for possession. Brazil’s Helena Betolaza had one of Brazil’s best shots on goal in the 26th minute, but the shot went just wide of the net. Noronha Machado and Fedrizzi kept up the attacking pressure for Brazil until a save by Chile’s keeper Beatriz Wirth regained possession for Chile. Back on attack and behind a cheering crowd, Chile took a two goal lead in the 28th minute off back-to-back goals by Sofia Filipek and Carolina Garcia, respectively. Chile continued to pressure on attack and Denise Krimerman gave her team a three goal lead in the 34th minute. In the final minute, Constanza Palma had a beautiful reverse shot to the far left post to make the halftime score, Brazil, 0, Chile, 4.

Brazil’s reserve keeper Teska Tuijt started the second half of the match. Chile continued to dominate possession to begin the second half and earned a penalty corner in the 41st minute. Captain Camila Caram put in a hard penalty corner shot to make the score, Brazil, 0, Chile 5. Chile maintained possession, but Brazil did a good job defensively to keep Chile passing around their midfield for about the next ten minutes. Chile broke through again on attack in the 50th minute when Sofia Walbaum converted a penalty corner to put her team ahead by six goals.

In the 57th minute, Chile’s Denise Krimerman received a green card. Chile, however, immediately went back on attack as Chile’s Francisca Tala slammed in a goal past Tuijt to make it Brazil 0, Chile 7. Brazil then had their first scoring opportunity of the second half in the 59th minute, but Chile broke up the play and regained possession. Brazil’s Betolaza, Karolina Sluis and Desiree Scherf played strong defense in the midfield to help their team hold Chile from generating many more shot opportunities in the second half. In the 69th minute, Chile’s persistence on attack paid off as Chile found Tala around the stroke spot to push the ball into goal past Tuijt, for her second goal of the match, to make the final score Brazil 0, Chile 8.

FIH confirms England, Belgium and South Africa to host Hockey World League Semi-Finals

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has confirmed that England, Belgium and South Africa will host the Hockey World League Semi-Finals between June and July in 2017.

Two men’s and two women’s Semi-Finals, which are Hockey World Cup 2018 qualifiers, will take place at these three locations between 15 June and 23 July, kicking off what will be a spectacular few months of international hockey.

England had already been confirmed as host of the first men’s Semi-Final, which will take place at London’s Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre between 15-25 June. The dates for the first women’s Semi-Final, in Belgium, are 21 June until 2 July, with the venue confirmed as Stade Fallon in Brussels.

The other men’s and women’s Semi-Finals will take place between 8-23 July at the Randburg Hockey Turf in Johannesburg, South Africa. This will be the nation’s first major FIH event since the Champions Challenge was held in the same city in 2011.

10 teams will take part in each Semi-Final. They will be comprised of six teams who qualify based on their FIH Hero World Ranking, whilst the remaining four teams will qualify through Hockey World League Round 2 events taking place earlier in 2017. In total, 20 men’s and 20 women’s teams will be taking part.

Composed of four rounds and played over two years, the Hockey World League shines a spotlight on the sport around the world. Even the smallest hockey-playing nations have the opportunity to write their own chapter in hockey’s history books.

A lot is at stake for teams participating in these Hockey World League Semi-Finals. Whilst vital FIH Hero World Ranking points will be awarded depending on final standings, the top* teams from each Semi-Final will qualify for the 2018 Hockey World Cups in India (men) and England (women) in addition to the Hockey World League Finals taking place in India (men) and New Zealand (women) later in 2017.

With the Hockey World League already underway, you can follow all the action from Rounds 1 and 2 over the coming months from locations around the world. Each event will have its own event page on FIH.ch but you can also keep up to date with all the latest information from the Hockey World League by following FIH on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Bolto hoping ROUND1 lightning doesn’t strike twice

Atletic Terrassa completed their build-up to EHL ROUND1 with a thrilling 4-3 win over Club de Campo with two goals in the closing eight minutes to nick the result.

Campo had led 3-2 with time running out before skipper Albert Beltran levelled and Jan Malgosa popped up with the winner to make it two wins from two in the Honor Division.

It follows a first day win over Junior FC to sit equal top of the Spanish table with Real Club de Polo and Marc Bolto says there is more to come.

“Of course we are still not at our best,” he told the EHL website. “But the most important was to win to get the three points against a direct rival.”

For Atletic, they will be hoping to avoid the problems that befell them in 2014 at the Pau Negre Stadium when they came unstuck in a group with Austria’s SV Arminen and Scotland’s Kelburne.

They meet the Scottish side again on Sunday a day after facing Dinamo Kazan. The 2015/16 season was a far cry from that 2014 experience, reaching the FINAL4 with memorable wins over Dragons and KHC Leuven.

Reflecting on the big contrast in outcome, Bolto said: “It's difficult to explain how such a difference comes about in one year. We are a very young team but we are growing step by step. This year we might be able to compete at the same level again and try to move on to the KO16.

“That KO16 against Dragons was an amazing game. The goal in the last minute with our fans was incredible. It’s difficult to explain how you feel when you play with the Corner Groc [their supporters group] cheering for you. They help us to keep fighting when it seems impossible to win.”

Atletic have held on to their big stars Roc Oliva and Marc Salles. On the goalkeeping front, the hugely impressive Marc Calzada is the outright number one now having shared the duties with Pol Garcia-Cascon last season.

Looking at the ties ahead, Bolto says of their group rivals: “We don’t have a lot of information about their style of hockey, but I'm sure it will be a big battle. It's always really nice to play in this competition and we are really looking forward to next weekend and to try and repeat last year’s incredible season.”

Deja vu for AZS AWF Poznan’s Adrian

KS AZS AWF Poznan coach Jacek Adrian says that while this is his club’s second trip to the Euro Hockey League, this is pretty much a venture into the unknown for the vast majority of his panel.

They qualified for this year’s EHL as the Polish runners-up, beating KS Pomorzanin Torun in the playoff semi-final before falling 6-1 to WKS Grunwald Poznan in the final.

Nonetheless, it earned AZS AWF a second appearance in the Euro Hockey League, lining out in 2009 in Round 1 in Paris at Saint Germain where they were undone by East Grinstead 4-1 and AH&BC Amsterdam 6-0. Adrian was the assistant coach back then but just Artur Pacanowski is back from the playing staff for a second EHL stint.

There are some familiarities with English and Dutch opposition once again on the menu in Holcombe and East Grinstead. They face a really tough Round 1 group, meeting the reigning champions SV Kampong and England’s rising force Holcombe in Banbridge.

From last year’s successful side, key forward Mateusz Hubloj has moved on to rivals WKS Grunwald Poznan but Mikolaj Gumny, their key striker with 16 goals to his name, is back while their defence will again be a crucial asset.

“Some young players have also joined our team like Marcin Wojciechowski, Szymon Brożyk, Łukasz Kurniewicz, Michał Dawid,” Adrian says of his panel.

“The most important players in our team are members of the Polish national team like Mikołaj [Gumny], Patryk Pawlak and goalkeeper Rafał Banaszak.

“We have already won five out of six matches in the Polish league and I hope that we are in optimal form to achieve over the EHL weekend.”

Police release penalty corner specialist Razie and Nabil for national duty

by Aftar Singh

Penalty corner specialist Razie Rahim (right) will be available to play in the Asian Champions Trophy from Oct 20-30.

KUALA LUMPUR: There is good news for the national hockey team.

Penalty corner specialist Mohd Razie Abdul Rahim and midfielder Nabil Fiqri Mohd Noor have been given the green light by their employers – Police – to feature in the 4th Asian Champions Trophy at the Wisma Belia Stadium in Kuantan from Oct 20-30.

Razie and Nabil have been undergoing inspector training at the Police Training Centre in Kuala Lumpur since May.

Razie not only deliver goals from penalty corners, but also mans the defence.

Nabil will be counted on to lead the midfield in the absence of the Sapura’s Mohd Marhan Mohd Jalil, who is out for six months after fracturing his left leg during the second leg of their TNB Cup semi-final against Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club (KLHC) on Sept 24.

Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) vice-president and coaching committee chairman Datuk Ow Soon Kooi admitted that the presence of Razie and Nabil would help the team put up a strong challenge in the tournament.

Both players will only join in the training when the national team return from Perth on Oct 10.

Malaysia have sent three teams – men’s senior, development squad and women – to play in the Australian Hockey League (AHL), which started on Sept 29.

Soon Kooi said that only the best 18 from the 40-player training squad would be named for the 11-day Asian Champions Trophy, which will also feature India, Pakistan, South Korea, Japan and China.

The teams will play in a round-robin format, with the top four teams qualifying for the semi-finals.

MHC president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said that the national team have been set a semi-final target.

“It’s an important tournament as it provides ranking points ... I want the national team to improve on their world ranking,” said Subahan.

“Malaysia are ranked 14th in the world. I want them to be among the world’s top 10 by 2020. To achieve that, the national team need to play in as many matches as possible.”

The New Zealand men's hockey team faces a major rebuilding program following the retirements of a couple of stalwarts.

Ryan Archibald and Bradley Shaw have called it quits following the Rio Olympic campaign.

Coach Colin Batch has extended his contract for another four years through to the Tokyo Olympics.

Batch says if they're going to be consistently performing at world tournaments they need to build on the depth of talent nationally.

He says to do that they need to keep producing younger players coming through the system who can put pressure on the current crop of players.

Schopman Announces Full 18 Athlete Junior World Cup Roster

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Following two suspenseful months of evaluations, U.S. U-21 Women's National Team Head Coach Janneke Schopman has established the full squad that will travel to Santiago, Chile in November for the women's Hockey Junior World Cup 2016 (JWC). During this time frame, eight candidates contended for the four remaining spots on the 18-athlete JWC roster. A final decision was made as a result of Schopman's travels up and down the east coast to watch those candidates in high school and collegiate games to determine who would be the best fit to represent the country on the international stage.

The last time the U-21 USWNT met was at a training camp from September 5-6 at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa. After qualifying for the JWC, the squad had 9 months of sporadic team training and accountable individual training to prepare themselves before they step foot on the field in Santiago.

“I think we learned a lot from the Junior Pan American Games and had a good summer of training,” said Schopman. “Every time we meet as a team we’re quick to get back into a rhythm. We don’t have much time together on the pitch now until the start of the tournament, but the girls are doing everything they can to be in the best shape possible. We’ve grown a lot as a group and I have faith we’ll be ready for the first game on Thursday, November 24.”

The U-21 USWNT will depart Norfolk, Va. in the evening on Sunday, November 20 following the NCAA Division I National Championship. The team will practice and have a test scrimmage against England on Tuesday, November 22 before their first game on Thursday, November 24. In the tournament of 16, Team USA is in Pool A along with Korea, The Netherlands and Zimbabwe.

“It’s obviously going to be a big challenge for us being in a pool with The Netherlands who are the most recent Junior World Cup champions and being in a pool with Korea which is a bit of an unknown,” commented Schopman. “The only way I look at it is I want our team to play to our potential with respect to the teams we play against and at the same time really showcase ourselves. I’m convinced we can do that.”

As the U-21 USWNT gets closer to showing their potential on the world stage, consider support them through their Rally U.S. to the Cup campaign or bid on one of the many items up for auction on their Winning Cause Auction website. Auction deadline is Saturday, October 29, 2016. All funds raised will be used to help supply coverage of travel, meals, medical treatment and more for the U-21 USWNT. Forbes Vigors RIP

It is with great sadness that we in Hockey Ireland have heard of the sudden passing of Forbes Vigors. Forbes always stood out to all who knew him as being extremely positive, hardworking and one of those one-in-a-million 'club members', whose passion for hockey and community has impacted hockey in Wicklow and beyond forever. Hockey in Ireland has lost a true gentleman, a committed player, who worked tirelessly for his club.

Hockey Ireland wish to extend its deepest sympathies to the Forbes’ family and all in Wicklow Hockey Club.

Below is a tribute written by Cormac McGrane on behalf of Wicklow Hockey Club.

‘Wicklow Hockey Club is sad to announce the sudden death of our much-loved colleague, player, coach and friend, Forbes Vigors. We wish to extend our deepest and heartfelt sympathy to his wife, Carmel and his daughters Evie and Grace, and to his extended family and friends.

Forbes collapsed and sadly passed away shortly after playing his usual committed and energetic role in front of our keeper in a 2-0 victory over Pembroke Wanderers at Nelson Park, East Glendalough School, our home pitch.

He will be remembered as a favourite player and coach by club members both young and old. He was passionate about the game and the club and guided us through our growth from a struggling men's team to a much respected Developing Club with teams competing and playing at all age levels from Primary School to Veterans.

In recent years, he began to take an active part in Junior Coaching, as so many players do when their children come of age to carry a stick into combat. He was an instant hit with the kids and proved to be a terrific asset to his fellow coaches, sharing his experience and wisdom with everyone. He managed to touch people and increase their skills, right across the club.

One notable off the pitch achievement was the Clubmark Quality Award this year, an award in which he played a key role as club secretary. Forbes also took an active part in club life and was behind many social and fundraising events.

On the pitch, Forbes began his career with Kilkenny College and was subsequently part of the Carlow team that remarkably rose through the ranks to reach Division 1 in Leinster with a squad of just 12 players, who only trained together during the pre-match warm-up.

He later played with South East Wanderers, before joining Wicklow in 2007. From that time on, Wicklow Hockey Club has grown in strength with his help.

Carmel, once again, our condolences; if we can be of any assistance or support to yourself and your girls in times to come, we would be honoured to be able to offer our help’He will be remembered as a favourite player and coach by club members both young and old.
