Kenya delighted the home fans by claiming victory in the women’s event at the Hockey World League Round 1 tournament in Nairobi. The host nation earned wins against Ghana and Tanzania to book a ticket into Round 2, with the men of Egypt cruising to victory in the men’s competition.

Ghana, placed 31 in the FIH World Rankings, came into the women’s competition as the top ranked team and showed their quality on the opening day by cruising to a 17-0 win against minnows Tanzania (WR: 46). However, it was the 44th ranked Kenyans who would emerge as tournament winners thanks mainly to a richly deserved 1-0 triumph over Ghana on Saturday (6 September).  Jacqueline Jow Wangeci scored the only goal of the game in the 26th minute, giving her team a famous victory over a side that sits 13 places above them in the rankings table.

Kenya’s tournament success was confirmed on Sunday (7 September) courtesy of a 22-0 triumph over Tanzania. Pauline Naise Amitebi netted seven times in the match, ensuring that she finished the competition as tournament top scorer. Egypt dominated the men’s tournament from start to finish, claiming wins in all three of their matches to move into Round 2.

The Egyptians (WR: 22) came into the tournament as clear favourites thanks to being 20 ranking positions ahead of nearest rivals Ghana. It was a tag that they lived up to, although they were certainly given a run for their money in this event. The Egyptians found themselves trailing 2-1 at half time in Friday’s opening match against Ghana (5th September), but second half goals from Ahmed Elnaggar and Mohamed Hassan ensured that they started the tournament with a victory.

That result was followed by a comfortable 17-0 win over Hockey World League debutants Tanzania on Saturday before they faced Kenya in a winner-takes-all clash on Sunday. Kenya came into the game with five points on the board having crushed Tanzania 8-0 and edged out Ghana in a shoot-out when the match finished 1-1.

Despite this, it was the classy Egyptians who proved themselves to be deserving tournament winners thanks to a 2-1 victory. Amr Sayed netted goals either side of half time from Amr Sayed gave Egypt a two goal lead before a Brian Saina strike 16 minutes from time set up a tense finale. However, Egypt held on to claim all three points and seal a berth in the second phase of the Hockey World League.

Ghana’s Johnny Botsio and Ayman Khalil of Egypt finished as the joint highest scorers in the tournament, with both players netting four goals apiece.

Round 2 will also see the introduction of the teams placed from 12 to 19 in the FIH World Rankings with the sides ranked 1 to 11 starting their journey in Round 3, where tickets for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as well as qualification for the Finals tournament are up for grabs.

Focus on Round Two: Continuity helps women's hockey to excel, as men falter

By Elizabeth Mburugu

Despite losing out in the Africa Nations Cup last year, Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) kept faith in the senior women’s team and the performance in the just concluded World League round one tournament has justified their decision.

Kenya has held onto the hope - albeit by the breadth of the string - that they will qualify for the 2016 Olympics, having vanquished Ghana in the three-day tournament that was staged at the City Park Stadium ending on Sunday. The ladies are now on course as their victory saw them begin their road to the Rio 2016 Olympics on a high. They beat Ghana 1-0 and Tanzania 22-0 to secure the lone ticket to the second round in Monte Video, Uruguay.

Cynthia Akinyi won the goalkeeper of the tournament award while captain Betsy Ommala led from the front to claim the best player’s award. While the women’s team displayed the best hockey game in the country, the men’s side had no answers to Egypt’s queries as they lost 2-1 in the decisive game.

Kenta men’s team introduced new players and as usual it will take time for them to learn the tricks. Kenya lost 2-1 to Egypt to bow out of the World League series. This was after they had beaten Tanzania 8-0 and held on to execute a 4-2 win from the flicks to edge out Ghana after the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Team focus

KHU selection panel put their emphasis on the team’s defence and midfield, leaving just Emmanuel Simiyu to shoulder the burden of scoring goals as a lone striker. Not an easy task for a débutante on the international stage.

Police talisman Moses Cheplaiti, who has maintained consistency as the country’s top scorer and George Mutira of Nairobi Simba, could have added value to the team but were omitted from the squad. The experience of Allan Iningu of Strathmore and Barnabas Odhiambo of Kenya international would also have helped.

A former national team player, who is now a coach, said the men had displayed some growth in the midfield and defence but their finishing was poor.

“Our mid-fielders and defenders played their roles well, we had a big problem as we lacked strikers to finish the job,” he said.

He said that coaches should not be tasked with selecting players for national team trials, just like is done in South Africa. That role should instead be reserved for a national body.

“We should learn from South Africa, who use a different format to select players. The coaches should not select players. They should only be given the free hand to manage and train a selected team,” he said.

“That ensures that we have the best players donning the national team colours as the panel looks at player records on consistency in performance not just for one season but several seasons,” he added.

This he said would be good because when coaches are allowed to select players for national team trials, they go for players from their clubs and may leave out deserving players for personal reasons.

“The national team represents the country so it should consist of the country’s most outstanding players. However that will never happen as long as we let the coaches handle the selection because they go for affiliations and not quality performance,” he said.

He added that only a few deserving players make it to the national team.

Ommala appeals for hockey sponsorship

By Elizabeth Mburugu

National team captain Betsy Ommala appealed to the Government and corporate firms to come on board and sponsor the women's national hockey team as they prepare for the International Hockey Federation (FIH) World League round two matches slated for February 28 to March 8 in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Kenya qualified for the second round of the World League series that marked the beginning of their road to the 2016 Rio Olympics following their 1-0 victory against arch-rivals Ghana and 22-0 win over Tanzania.

Ommala, who also won the best player's award in the tournament, tipped the Kenyan hockey queens to excel in South America if they get the support they need.

"We have what it takes to compete on the world, what we lack is financial support to facilitate our preparations and also see that by the time of the tournament we are ready. We don't have to worry about air tickets, allowances and accommodation but keep our focus on training," she said.

Ommala added that sponsors could facilitate international friendly matches that would help them gauge the team against stronger teams.

"In round two we will meet stronger sides ranked higher than us (between no. 12 and 19) in the world. This means we have to up our game, and to that end we need friendlies with tougher sides so we can test ourselves."

The national teams have all through relied on friendly matches with local clubs and select sides while preparing for major events. These build-up matches don't offer them enough challenge that can help them improve on their game and help them compete on the international scene.

Ommala, who also captains Africa women clubs reigning champions Orange Telkom, said her club is a perfect example of how important sponsorship in any sport can be.

"We are able to shine on the continental scene because of the sponsorship and goodwill of Orange Telkom. They have made everything easy for us and all we worry about is how to play and maintain the status quo," Ommala said.

Orange Telkom hockey club will be defending their continental title for a third time in a row later in the year in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

Hockey coach to use new game plan in Incheon

By S. Ramaguru

Malaysian hockey team will deploy a new strategy in a bid to strike gold at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, from Sept 19-Oct 4.

Interim coach A. Arulselvaraj has decided to field only two midfielders to allow for a more mobile and combustible attack, starting with the opening Group A match against Singapore on Sept 20.

“We have been trying out this new game plan in training. I will use a 4-2-4 system, using four defenders, two midfielders and four forwards.

“One forward and one defender will also double-up as a midfielder depending on the situation during a match.

“I have ample players to try out this strategy. And all of them are experienced players. I’m confident they will get used to the playing style,” he said.

Three players – Mohamed Sharun Nabil, Nabil Fiqri Mohamed Nor and Mohamed Marhan Jalil – are in the running for the two starting spots in midfield.

“The two midfielders will have to be fully fit and on the ball all the time,” said Arulselvaraj.

Arulselvaraj will name his final 16-man team on Thursday after the flag-handing ceremony for the Malaysian contingent in Putrajaya.

He said: “For me, experience is important when I pick my final squad. A player with more international caps has the advantage as it goes to show he has the ability to play at the highest level. He will also have a better understanding of what is required of him on the pitch.”

Arulselvaraj added that he has yet to start work on their penalty corner set piece moves.

“That will start once I have named the final squad. We have four flickers in the team and it’s just a matter of getting them in shape for the games. I am sure that each of them will be able to do the job,” he said.

Defender Mohamed Razie Rahim is the main flicker while forward Mohamed Shahril Saabah is the second choice. The other two are Fitri Saari and Ahmad Kazamirul Nasruddin.

Besides Singapore, the others in Malaysia’s group are South Korea, Japan and Bangladesh. Group B has Pakistan, India, China, Oman and Sri Lanka.

Midlands stay top in Shield with 3-0 victory

By David Leggat

Midlands have maintained their Challenge Shield lead, after a 3-0 win over Capital last night.

But things have tightened at the top in the national league.

After an unpromising start, four wins on the bounce have carried Auckland to 14 points, equal with Southern, but with a superior goal difference, and both three behind Midlands.

Captain Richard Petherick scored with two penalty strokes for Midlands, Matt Rees-Gibbs getting the other goal. Midlands are yet to be beaten in regulation time at the tournament, the only setback a penalty shootout loss against North Harbour.

Auckland beat Central 3-2 yesterday, but it was a close thing. Central led 2-1 going into the final quarter, courtesy of goals by Steve Davison and Ryan Cosgrove, to one by international Marcus Child.

However, star Australian import Jamie Dwyer and former Black Sticks star Ryan Archibald made the difference in the last couple of minutes, with one goal apiece.

Southern needed a shootout to get past Harbour in a goalless match, Nick Ross grabbing the winner in sudden death.

Northland continue to lead the women's K Cup, but this time their win was far from clear-cut against bottom side Southern. The game finished 2-2, and Northland required a penalty shootout win, 3-1, to retain a two-point lead over resurgent Auckland going into today's rest day.

Auckland's third successive win, 2-1 over Canterbury yesterday, has them eyeing the playoffs.

Pippa Hayward had Canterbury in front before international Krystal Forgesson equalised shortly before halftime. The winner came from a firm penalty corner strike by Su Arn Kwek just before three-quarter time. Auckland held off determined Canterbury efforts late on, with up-and-coming Black Sticks defender Liz Thompson a standout.

"It was a good, solid team performance," Auckland coach Jude Menezes said yesterday. "We are getting better with every game."

Defending champions Midlands and Harbour also had wins in shootouts over Capital and Central respectively.

The sixth round will be at North Harbour tomorrow.

Fürste back with a bang for UHC

UHC Hamburg’ Moritz Fürste made a superb return to action, scoring two goals in his first Bundesliga game for 303 days following a series of injury issues.

It helped UHC win both of their opening games on the first weekend of the season in Germany. Fürste scored their first goal against Nuremburg before they fell 3-1 behind. But efforts from Fürste, Nicolas Bruns and the winner from Florian Fuchs earned a 4-3 win with just a minute remaining.

Fürste scored again in a 3-1 win over Münchner SC with his brother Jonas and Carl Alt also on the mark.UHC coach Kais al-Saadi was pleased with the play of his team, saying: "We had two difficult games against two strong opponents so we are glad to have taken six points this weekend."

EHL and German champions Harvestehuder THC endured a mixed opening weekend. They landed a 2-1 win over Blau-Weiss Berlin with Michael Korper scoring the winner after newcomer Daniel von Drachenfels had equalised.

But they fell 4-3 to Berliner HC on Sunday. HTHC led twice, Korper and Benjamin Stanzl scoring but Berliner bounced back to move 4-3 ahead with eight minutes to go through Pitt Arnold.

It left coach Christoph Bechmann frustrated, saying afterwards: "The deciding factor was that all goals were scored against us by individual defensive errors.”

Rot-Weiss Köln, meanwhile, picked up two wins, Christopher Zeller and Benjamin Wess scoring goals in a 2-1 win over Crefelder while Marco Miltkau netted twice in a 4-3 win over Uhlenhorst Mülheim.

SAI clears hockey camp for juniors

The uncertainty over India’s participation in the Sultan of Johor Cup men’s junior hockey tournament is over as the Sports Authority of India, after much dilly-dallying, has finally approved the national camp to be held here from September 13 to October 9.

India are the defending champions in the Sultan of Johor Cup to be held in Johor Bahru, Malaysia from October 10-20.

The 27-day camp, which was hanging in uncertainty, will be held for 33 players and 10 officials at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here.

“Administrative approval of the Competent Authority is hereby accorded to hold the junior men’s national coaching camp of 43 campers, comprising 33 junior men’s probables and 10 officials (including Indian and foreign coaches and support staff at MDCNC, New Delhi from 13th Sept to 9th Oct, 2014 in preparations for Sultan of Johor Cup and FIH Junior World 2016,” the SAI informed Hockey India (HI) through a communication dated September 5.

HI secretary general Narinder Batra, who was critical of the government’s nodal agency for not approving the camp, thanked SAI for clearing the deck.

“Thank you for clearing the camp for junior men from 13 September, 2014,” Batra said in his reply.

Incidentally, Batra was at loggerheads with SAI officials recently for not approving the colts’ camp ahead of the tournament, and also claimed the national federation faces the risk of a hefty financial penalty from the International Hockey Federation if it was forced to withdraw the team from the Sultan of Johor Cup at the last minute.

He said the FIH-sanctioned event was a part of Annual Calendar for Training and Competition (ACTC) approved for this year till the Asian Games.

Besides India, the other participating countries in the tournament are Australia, Great Britain, Pakistan, New Zealand and Malaysia.

Australian Hockey League powered by new sponsor as fixtures announced

The 2014 and 2015 editions of the Australian Hockey League (AHL) will be powered by Premier Technology Solutions as part of a relationship that will see the Australian owned and operated ICT provider become Hockey Australia’s integrated IT partner.

The forthcoming men’s and women’s tournaments, which get underway in Adelaide and Brisbane respectively on Saturday 4 October, will be known as the Australian Hockey League powered by Premier Technology Solutions.

Over nine days of intense competition, the AHL will pit state and territory teams head-to-head in the battle for the national title. Many of Australia’s recent Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning Kookaburras and Hockeyroos are set to turn out for their states of origin alongside Australian junior internationals and the very best players in each state and territory.

With the announcement that Premier Technology Solutions is to power the AHL, the fixtures for the 2014 tournaments were also confirmed.

Defending men’s champions the Queensland Blades have been drawn to face the Rams Home Loans Canberra Lakers in the opening match in Adelaide while women’s 2013 title winners the Queensland Scorchers have also been paired with ACT’s representatives, the Canberra Labor Club Strikers.

The WA Diamonds, runners-up in 2013, will play the women of New South Wales, the NSW Arrows, while the Victorian Vipers women will face the NT Pearls first up. The Southern Suns of SA will match up against the Tassie Van Demons.

Returning to the opening day of the men’s competition, the Tassie Tigers take on the SA Southern Hotshots in Pool A while in Pool B the Victorian Vikings begin against the NSW Waratahs. The SRA Territory Stingers and WA Thundersticks round off day one.

Cam Vale, Hockey Australia Chief Executive, said, “This marks the first time in more than a decade that the AHL will have a title sponsor and it’s a real boost for the sport that the Australian Hockey League will be powered by Premier Technology Solutions. Their experience in the IT industry and customer-focused solutions will help Hockey Australia continue to operate as a leading organisation in our industry.”

Vale added, “Both Hockey South Australia and Hockey Queensland are doing an excellent job in preparing to host the championships and we look forward to crowning our national champions on 11 October.”

Founder and Director of Premier, Matt Beesley said, “Partnering with Hockey Australia was an obvious choice because like the Australian Hockey League, Premier offers a world class product and often doesn’t receive the recognition it deserves. Working together we hope to lift the profile of both organisations.”
