Harmanpreet hat-trick leads India to win in 9-goal thriller against Australia



FIH Hockey Pro League action continued from the Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela as India took on Australia in the first encounter between the two sides in the 2022/23 season. Harmanpreet Singh was the hero for the home team scoring thrice as India edged past the visitors in a 9-goal thriller that went down to the wire.

Rourkela: A spirited performance by the Indian Men's Hockey Team helped them register a thrilling 5-4 win against Australia here at the magnificent Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in the FIH Hockey Pro League on Sunday.

A gallant never-say-die Kookaburras outfit has gone down to a Harmanpreet Singh inspired India 5-4 in a pulsating FIH Pro League encounter at Rourkela’s Birsa Munda Stadium.

Seventeen minutes of absolute brilliance and assertive control, wedged between overall superiority and nervous moments, saw India register its second win in as many games of the FIH Pro League here on Sunday. It nudged past Australia 5-4 in a nine-goal thriller that consigned the opponent to its second straight defeat. According to FIH records, India last beat Australia in a major competition in 1996 in the Champions Trophy.

For the second time in successive matches, India led by three goals but endured nerve-wracking closing minutes to finish winners by the slenderest of margins. On Sunday in front of a packed Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela, the hosts, riding on a hat-trick by captain Harmanpreet Singh, warded off a late Australian challenge to win 5-4 after sitting pretty 4-1 at half-time in the FIH Pro League encounter.

India rode on a hat-trick by captain Harmanpreet Singh to beat reigning Commonwealth Games champions Australia 5-4 in the FIH Men's Hockey Pro League 2022-23 at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela on Sunday.

Indian striker Harmanpreet Singh scored a hat trick in a match played between India and Australia at Rourkela in FIH Hockey Pro League Men 2022-23. India defeated Australia by five goals to four. Harmanpreet Singh contributed three goals in the match against Australia,  overall Harmanpreet Singh scored three hat tricks in the event.

Pawan and Danneberg - two 21-year-olds to look out for in future goalkeeping battles

Pawan has played a big team before - against Netherlands in an away game last year - and in front of big crowds at home, while Danneberg starred in Germany’s World Cup triumph just over a month back in a packed Bhubaneswar stadium.

The two days so far at the FIH Pro League ‘mini tournament’ here have seen two 21-year olds shine and impress as much for their temperament and potential as their performances. The fact that both of them are goalkeepers – India’s Pawan Malik and Jean-Paul Danneberg for Germany – is the only thing common between them, though.
