Sukhjeet Singh scores a brace as India edge past Germany in a thriller



FIH Hockey Pro League action began in the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela as world champions Germany took on hosts India in the fifth match of the season for both teams. India relied on 3 quick goals on either side of the half-time break to take an unassailable lead, and while Germany pulled two back, it was not enough as India took all three points from the encounter.

Rourkela, 10th March, 2023: The Indian Men's Hockey Team enthralled the evening audience at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium on Friday as they clinched a 3-2 win against reigning World Champions Germany in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2022/23. Goals were scored by Harmanpreet Singh (30+) and Sukhjeet Singh (32' and 43') for India while Paul-Philipp Kaufmann (45') and Michel Struthoff (58') scored for Germany.





India begins rebuild with win over world champion Germany

India started its rebuilding phase with a 3-2 win against reigning champion Germany in its first match since the World Cup.

The long-standing inside joke in the Indian hockey circle is to keep the men’s team in the dark about the identity of the tournament till after it has actually ended to get the best out of them. Outside the country, most teams insist the team is tough to beat at home. Friday was both as India started its post-World Cup rebuilding with a 3-2 win against reigning champion Germany.

It was a bridge too far for even comeback kings Germany. Down 0-3, the recently crowned World Cup champions, true to their wont, fought back before going down 2-3 to hosts India at the Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela, Odisha, in the FIH Pro League on Friday.

Rourkela: Striker Sukhjeet Singh struck a second half brace as India stunned world champions Germany 3-2 in the FIH Pro League hockey, which is their first outing after the World Cup debacle here, on Friday.

Men's Hockey Junior Africa Cup: Records

The Men's and Women's hockey Junior Africa Cup to be held at Suez Canal Authority Stadium,  Ismailia, Egypt from 12 to 16 March 2023.

Four junior hockey teams from South Africa, Egypt, Kenya and Zimbabwe will compete in both men's and women's  category of Junior (U 21) Africa Cup conducted by African Hockey Federation. At the last moment Nigeria and Ghana with drew from the event.

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik was Friday handed a certificate recognising Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium Rourkela as the world’s largest fully seated hockey stadium by Guinness Book of World Records, an official release said .
