Commonwealth Games hockey gets underway with a bang

New Zealand women record huge victory while the men’s side play out remarkable draw with Scotland



New Zealand and Scotland men’s sides played out an incredible 5 all draw in the final game of a day that saw Ghana’s men make their debut in the games against hosts England. Scotland women got their campaign off to a dream start, beating South Africa, while Canada women recorded a comfortable win over Wales. New Zealand’s women were also in action, recording a massive victory over Kenya.

Three goals in the final 15-minute quarter earned New Zealand’s men, silver medallists in the men’s hockey tournament at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, an extraordinary 5-5 draw with Scotland in the sides’ opening Pool A match here at Birmingham 2022.

Scotland’s women won their opening match of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham with a thrilling 4-2 victory over South Africa. Charlotte Watson, Sarah Robertson, Fiona Burnet and Jen Eadie were the scorers as the Scots got their campaign off to a flying start in front of their passionate supporters at the University of Birmingham Hockey and Squash Centre.





Indian Eves Overcome Pugnacious Ghana in Commonwealth Games Opener



It was very much on expected lines that the Indian hockey eves would taught a ‘hockey lesson’ to a side like Ghana that does not have much of a reputation with a world ranking of 30. But surprisingly, it was Ghana who probably taught a lesson or two on how to defend against a formidable opponent like India. The Ghananian women ensured one thing – it won’t be a stroll in the pitch for the Janneke Schopman-coached Indian outfit – of course, the Indian women won their Commonwealth Games opener 5-0 and the statsbooks would always say that, but the pugnacity of Ghana cannnot be missed from this match.

The Indian women’s hockey team defeated a lowly Ghana 5-0 to start its Commonwealth Games campaign on a winning note here today.





Why India’s second goal against Ghana was not an own goal

India’s second goal in its CWG hockey opener against Ghana was credited to Neha Goyal even though the final touch came from an opponent’s stick. Here is why -

Since 2013, FIH has stopped accounting for goals scored via a deflection off a defender’s stick from within the circle as an own/self-goal.





Stairs nets two as Canada drops Wales in opener

The Canadian WolfPack got off the mark in style in their games opener, defeating Wales 4-0 in comfortable fashion. Brie Stairs (Kitchener, Ont.) led the way with two goals, while Sara McManus (Tsawwassen, B.C.) and Hannah Haughn (North Vancouver, B.C.) also got on the board. Rowan Harris (Ottawa, Ont.) recorded the shutout, while Melanie Scholz (Calgary, Alta.) kitted up to earn her first senior cap.
