Netherlands and Argentina's date with destiny



After two weeks of intense competition, it is the final that so many hockey fans have been looking to with keen anticipation. Netherlands overcame a strong and impressive challenge from Australia, while Argentina and Germany couldn't be separated in one of the most entertaining matches of recent times. It took the cruel ending of a shoot-out to send Las Leonas to a date with Oranje at the Estadio Olimpic de Terrassa on Sunday 17 July.

The Netherlands advanced to their seventh consecutive final at the Women's Hockey World Cup and are set to face Argentina in the gold medal match in Terrassa in Spain.

Terrassa — Frederique Matla’s decisive and timely flick – her first goal in four games – after a deluge of 10 penalty corners in a five-minute, third quarter spell finally unlocked the keys to a seventh World Cup final berth in a row with a 1-0 victory at a sun-kissed Estadi Olimpico.

Terrassa — Rocio Sanchez Moccia, Argentina’s 33-year-old mother and captain, sent Las Leonas into their first Women’s World Cup final for 12 years as they set up a mouthwatering clash with the Netherlands, the defending champions who have yet to hit their all-conquering stride in this competition. It will take several hours for Argentina to come down from their Saturday night heights.

Bronze medal finishes in the 2022 Asia Cup and 2002 FIH Pro League left no one in doubt that the Indian women’s hockey team was primed for great things, especially at the 2002 World Cup. But the script folded otherwise – just about a year after the Tokyo Olympics, the Indian women fell off the high pedestal they created in the last twelve months or so, not only missing the quarterfinal and in the end settling for 9th position – a notch above their 8th place finish at the 2018 World Cup in London.
