Argentina do the double over hosts New Zealand in Auckland

It was a memorable day for the national men’s and women’s teams of Argentina as both sides earned victories over the Black Sticks in front of a packed North Harbour Hockey Stadium in Auckland on Sunday (10 March).

A pre-match injury to veteran striker Matias Paredes was not enough to stop an inexperienced Argentina men’s team from taking a 2-1 win over the Black Sticks, with Lucas Vila producing a Player of the Match performance as goals from Martin Ferreiro and Maico Casella fired Los Leones into fourth position in the FIH Pro League standings. Argentina’s women were in sparkling form against the hosts, running out 3-1 winners thanks to strikes from Agustina Albertarrio, Micaela Retegui and Rosario Luchetti. The result moves Argentina into third position in the standings, with New Zealand in fifth.

Argentina’s men (WR:4) took to the field in Auckland without some of their most experienced players; goalkeeper Juan Vivaldi and defender Pedro Ibarra were both absent, as was penalty corner ace Gonzalo Peillat. Head Coach German Orozco opted to give FIH Pro League debuts to five players, with teenager Lucas Toscani and 22-year-old Thomas Habif - brother of Argentina women’s internationals Florencia and Agustina - both earning their first international caps.

Argentina’s youthful squad of just 16 players were dealt a blow before the match had even started, as veteran striker Matias Paredes was forced out of the contest through injury. Despite their numerical disadvantage against the 18 players of New Zealand (WR:4), Argentina’s young guns gave an excellent account of themselves throughout the contest, with brilliant attacker Lucas Vila providing the required guile in a remarkable victory for the depleted Olympic champions.

Following chances at either end for Argentina’s Maico Casella and Stephen Jenness of New Zealand, it was the visiting team who opened the scoring in the second quarter thanks to Martin Ferreiro, who capitalised on a defensive error to lift the ball over onrushing goalkeeper George Enersen to find the target from a narrow angle.

New Zealand’s Jenness and Jared Panchia came close to levelling the scores in the third quarter, with Casella and the lively Vila both forcing saves from Black Sticks’ replacement goalkeeper Richard Joyce ahead of an action-action-packed final period. Casella doubled Argentina’s advantage with a low penalty corner to leave the hosts with a mountain to climb if they were to claim their first win of the FIH Pro League.

Black Sticks Head Coach Darren Smith threw caution to the wind in the final ten minutes, replacing goalkeeper Joyce with an outfield player to turn up the heat on their opponents. The impact was almost immediate, with Kane Russell slamming a penalty corner inside the left post to set up a grandstand finish.

A green card for debutant Habif with three minutes remaining gave the home favourites a two player outfield advantage over the visitors, but it did not stop the team from South America claiming an impressive victory when fate seemed against them.

“We played a really smart game, especially in the first half when we defended really good”, said Player of the Match Lucas Vila after the game. “We had a few injuries last week, and new guys who played their first game today. I’m really proud of this group. The ones who played in this game showed that they had the quality to do it. They did really well.”

Reflecting on the match, New Zealand captain Arun Panchia said: “We are working really hard, it’s been a long time since we won a game. It was another tough performance today. We had a few chances but couldn’t capitalise on them and we couldn’t really build any momentum through the game.”

Argentina’s women (WR:4) produced an excellent first half performance as they set about the task of matching their male compatriots, with their attacking players proving too hot to handle for New Zealand (WR:6) as the South American giants opened up a 2-0 lead.

Agustina Albertarrio put Las Leonas ahead towards the end of the first quarter, creating space for herself before drilling emphatically past goalkeeper Grace O’Hanlon from eight metres out. That advantage that was doubled when Micaela Retegui - daughter of Leonas' Head Coach Carlos ‘Chapa’ Retegui - forced home from close range, via the stick of New Zealand defender Megan Hull, after an neat interchange of passes with Carla Rebecchi.

New Zealand had the best chance of the third quarter from a penalty corner situation but could not beat Argentina goalkeeper Belen Succi, who watched her side move into a 3-0 lead early in the fourth period. Rosario Luchetti dived in to score a wonderful deflection, guiding Albertarrio’s perfect pass from the left into the goal via the right post.

The home side rallied hard in the latter stages and created numerous opportunities from both open play and penalty corners, but the Argentina defence - lead by the outstanding Sofia Toccalino, who was named Player of the Match -  held firm to take the win and move up to third position in the league standings.

Speaking after the match, New Zealand captain Stacey Michelsen said: “I think we had a lot of possession through the midfield today but probably didn’t create enough opportunities going into the attacking 25. We know how clinical they are in their attacking circle and we certainly let them get away today. Their ball retention and individual skill level is so high and we certainly didn’t match them on that today.”

The FIH Pro League continues on Friday 15 March with Spain’s men hosting Germany in Valencia, with Australia’s national teams welcoming both Argentina (Saturday 16 March) and New Zealand (Sunday 17 March) to the Sydney Olympic Park Hockey Centre over the weekend.

Black Sticks men's search for a Pro League win continues as Argentina too strong

The Black Sticks men are still searching for their first Pro League win with six of their seven home games done and dusted.

Argentina were the latest team to prove to strong for them, winning 2-1 at North Harbour Hockey Stadium in Auckland on Sunday afternoon.

The Argentine women also proved to strong for their Black Sticks counterparts, winning 3-0  later in the day to expand the gap between the two teams, who sit fourth and fifth on the ladder.

Martin Ferreiro opened the scoring six minutes into the second quarter for the Argentine men, pouncing on the ball when David Brydon failed to trap it cleanly in front of goal and firing a shot past Black Sticks keeper George Enersen.

That goal mean the visitors went into the sheds in front at halftime, though there was little separating the two teams elsewhere on the stat sheet.

Stephen Jenness blew an excellent chance to level the scores minutes into the third quarter, turning a cross from Kane Russell on the right wide of goal from dead in front.

Argentina had been happy soaking up pressure after going in front and doubled their lead three minutes into the fourth quarter, winning a penalty corner on the counter which Maico Casella slammed home.

Kane Russell pulled one back for the Black Sticks with a powerful strike at a penalty corner midway through the period, but they couldn't find a second, despite playing with a two-man advantage for the final two minutes.

Having played exclusively at home so far, in Auckland and Christchurch, the Black Sticks men head across the Tasman for their first away game next weekend, against Australia in Sydney.

A trip to Argentina follows after a month-long break, then, after a clash at home against Australia on Anzac Day, it's off to Europe for the finish to the inaugural Pro League season.

The Black Sticks women follow the same path, with trips to China, the weekend after next, and the United States, on the way to Europe in June, thrown in for good measure.

They had the chance to move into the top four with a win over Argentina in the second match of the double-header on Sunday, but couldn't create anywhere near as many chances as their conquerors.

It was Agustina Albertarrio who put the visitors in front, winning the ball off Tarryn Davey in the Black Sticks' D and firing a shot past keeper Grace O'Hanlon with a minute to play in the opening quarter.

Micaela Retegui then doubled the lead midway through the second quarter, putting the ball into the path of Black Stick Megan Hull at the end of a counterattack, leaving the Kiwi with no option but to put it into her own net.

They added a third at the start of the final quarter, Rosario Luchetti sliding in to finish after Albertarrio sent a cross in from the left.

ROUND-UP: Investec English Women's Hockey League

Buckingham climbed to fourth in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Premier Division with a 2-1 win over Beeston, boosting their hopes of reaching the play-offs.

Hosts Beeston made them work for it and went ahead through Rosy Stephens’ 25th minute goal from open play.

Buckingham hit back after the break with Lottie Porter equalising from a penalty corner before Natasha James completed the comeback in the 59th minute.

With Clifton Robinsons losing to Slough, Buckingham leap-frog them into fourth place.

Surbiton moved to within a point of league leaders Holcombe with a 2-0 win over bottom of the table Canterbury.

After being held by Canterbury through the first half, Alice Sharp got Surbiton off the mark with a 40th minute field goal. The tie was eventually settled two minutes from time as Georgie Twigg scored via penalty corner, giving Surbiton a 2-0 win.

Bowdon Hightown did Surbiton a favour, battling to a 1-1 stalemate with leaders Holcombe.

Olivia Wilde opened the scoring, giving Holcombe a 19th minute lead but their hopes of three points were dashed as Megan Batchelor scored just four seconds from the final whistle for Bowdon Hightown.

Slough haltered Clifton Robinsons progress with a shock 2-0 victory.

Clifton had been hoping to make it four wins since Christmas, but goals from Philipa Newton and Lizzy Totten dictated otherwise.

Sophie Bray was in fine form as she racked up a hat-trick of goals for East Grinstead in their 3-1 home win over University of Birmingham.

Amy Costello equalised for the University of Birmingham in the eighth minute but the hosts were too strong in the end. East Grinstead stay third, four points behind top of the table.

Investec Women’s Conference West

Isca boosted their hopes of a spot in Division One following next season’s league restructure when they beat leaders Stourport 2-0 in the Investec Conference West.

After a loss the previous weekend Stourport were looking to regain their balance, but two early goals from Isca’s Orla Cooke and Kim Sheldon compounded the home sides woes, lifting Isca to seventh in the table.

Gloucester City could have gone within three points of the leaders with a win but it wasn’t to be, falling 3-2 to fourth place Trojans.

Gloucester came from behind twice in the game but a third time proved too much after Heather Batten gave Trojans a third goal, and three points from a 63rd minute penalty corner.

Sally Walton was in her usual impressive form, finding the back of the net three times in Olton & West Warwickshire’s 6-1 win over bottom side Oxford Hawks.

Elsewhere, Swansea City thrashed hosts Exe 5-0 and Barnes battled to a 1-1 draw with Reading.

Investec Women’s Conference North

Loughborough Students maintained their six-point lead at the top of the Investec Women’s Conference North with a 2-1 over Belper.

Belper started brightly thanks to an 11th minute strike from Camilla Hall, but Loughborough turned the tide in the second half with goals from Alice Rolfe and Genevieve Hussell.

Second-placed Leicester extended the gap between them and Brooklands-Poynton in third with a win at Timperley, while Brooklands came unstuck at Sutton Coldfield.

Leicester’s Elizabeth Honarmand, Anna Elson and Rachel Mack all scored in their 3-1 victory over bottom side Timperley.

Brooklands-Poynton salvaged a point against Sutton Coldfield, who went 2-1 ahead thanks to a two goals in ten minutes from Emma McCabe before Libby Bird levelled the game with a 53rd minute penalty corner with the game ending 2-2.

In the remaining fixtures, Leeds triumphed over Fylde 3-1 as Ben Rhydding held University of Durham to a 1-1 draw.

Investec Women’s Conference East

Hampstead & Westminster held onto their two-point advantage at the top of the Investec Conference East with a 3-0 away win over Bedford.

Lauren Turner, Lucy Hyams and Melanie Wilkinson all scored for the league leaders who will be looking to confirm a place in next season’s Premier Division.

Second-placed Wimbledon stayed in the hunt for promotion with a 4-0 win at home to Horsham.

Eliza Brett scored twice in the victory along with goals from Fiona Semple and Fiona Burnet.

Harleston Magpies boosted their chances of a place in Division One following the 2019-20 league restructure.

A 4-2 win against Sevenoaks saw the sides swap places, Harleston rising to fourth level on points with Cambridge City in third, who themselves beat Ipswich 3-1.

In the Conference’s other match, St Albans stayed sixth with a 2-0 victory over Southgate.

Debutants Oranje Leonas hold UoN

By Elizabeth Mburugu

Oranje Leonas yesterday held University of Nairobi (UoN) to a barren draw in a Kenya Hockey Union women’s Super League match at City Park.

The draw saw them move top of the second tier log with four points having made their league debut with a 1-0 win over Multimedia University last weekend.

Team coach Jacqueline Atieno said that despite the draw she was impressed with her young charges courage in their first two matches. “Competition at the league level is new to them and they have done well so far. They have shown potential in the first two matches and I believe that they will get better with every game,” Atieno said.

She added that playing in the league is a learning curve for the development side whose average age is 18 years.

Oranje began their hunt for a second victory in earnest pinning UON in their own half for the better part of the first quarter.

Manjit determined to promote hockey in the region

By Jugjet Singh

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, sees his son, the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah (Center), as a future president for the Malaysia Hockey Confederation (MHC) and the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF). (PIC BY MUHD ASYRAF SAWAL)

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Hockey Confederation (MHC) vice-president Datuk Manjit Majid Abdullah went to Gifu, Japan, for the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) Annual General Meeting (AGM) not expecting anything, but instead returned home as the Federation’s vice-president.

The position comes with a lot of responsibilities, as he was also appointed as the AHF’s head of events and special projects.

“I did not expect anything from the AHF so I was pleasently surprised when I was nominated for the post of vice-president.

“And being appointed head of events and special projects is very challenging, but I have been there and done that before with the MHC as well as the Johor Hockey Association (HA),” said Manjit who took up the challenge with an open heart.

In joy, there was also sadness for Manjit as The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah did not seek reelection to continue as AHF president.

Instead, Al-Sultan Abdullah accepted the appointment as AHF’s Royal Patron.

“Since the days of Sultan Azlan Shah, and even when he was the King, Malaysia has held the AHF presidency, but Al-Sultan Abdullah declined as he wanted to concentrate on his Royal duties.

“However, his love for hockey was evident when he acccepted the position of Royal Patron, while he did not keep any posts which he previously held in football,” said Manjit.

Manjit’s immediate task is to create new tournaments in the wake of hockey being sidelined in the Sea Games.

“Manila (2019) will only host indoor hockey, while Vietnam after that has taken hockey off the list of sports to be contested.

“What I will propose soon to the AHF is to start a Hockey 5’s tournament in Johor, as well as another age-group tournament (Under-16 or Under-18) in another state in Malaysia, so that hockey is kept alive and well in this region.”

Planning, executing and managing a World-class Under-21 tournament is nothing new to Manjit, who was instrumental in launching the inaugural Sultan of Johor Cup (SoJC) back in 2011.

It is now into its Ninth Edition this year and has become one of the top hockey tournaments in the region.

The SoJC is the only Under-21 Invitational tournament in the world and is widely promoted by the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

It is certainly going to be very interesting times indeed for the AHF, as Manjit will also propose for an Asian World Cup, a regional alternative to the FIH World Cup.

“It’s time we have a regional World Cup to further promote the sport, and I will propose this to the AHF in our next meeting.”

Manjit also revealed that Al-Sultan Abdullah is keen for his son, the current Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah, to become the next MHC as well as AHF president.

“Al-Sultan Abdullah has said he is taking a break from sports, but is keen to groom his son (23-years-old) to take the reigns in MHC as well as AHF as president.”

Tengku Mahkota of Pahang is currently attached to the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst.
