Hockeyroos Qualify For Four Nations Final With Perfect Record

Ben Somerford

Naomi Evans scored a last-minute winner to ensure the Hockeyroos qualified for Sunday’s Four Nations Final with a perfect record after a 2-1 win over the United States in Ibaraki on Saturday.

Goulburn product Evans, playing just her third game for Australia, calmly slotted the winner with 34 seconds left after Savannah Fitzpatrick’s central pass.

Barely 60 seconds earlier, USA’s Taylor West had equalised Georgina Morgan’s 23rd minute drag flick.

Australia simply needed to avoid a three-goal defeat to book their spot in Sunday’s final against Japan but will be full of confidence after a third win in the Four Nations.

The Hockeyroos dominated the key statistics, with 36-19 circle entries, 14-6 shots and 5-2 penalty corners, but coach Paul Gaudoin wasn’t content with the performance.

"I don't think we played as well as we would've liked. It was pleasing to find a way to win in the end,” he said.

"We know we have to be better to win a final tomorrow. We will have to be significantly better."

Grace Stewart came close to opening the scoring in the first quarter after Hayley Padget’s scuffed shot almost found her unmarked at the far post.

Morgan put Australia ahead halfway through the second period with a trademark finish from a penalty corner.

USA’s Tara Vitesse kept Australia’s defence on their toes before half-time with a reverse stick shot which went wide.

The Hockeyroos won a handful of penalty corners in the third, with Morgan unable to add to her tally before Savannah Fitzpatrick’s shot was almost swept home by Stewart in the 44th minute.

Renee Taylor went on an enterprising 49th minute, beating two defenders before shooting over.

Australia seemed destined for the win until Lauren Moyer’s cutback from the baseline was expertly deflected home by West.

The Hockeyroos weren’t content with the draw, despite it being enough to clinch a spot in Sunday’s final, with 25-year-old Evans showing composure to slot the winner.

Australia 2 (Morgan 23’, Evans 60’)
USA 1 (West 59’)

Former Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) men’s Premier League champions Strathmore University Gladiators will have everything to play for as they seek double victory this weekend at City Park.

The 2016 winners will lock horns with fourth placed Wazalendo today before taking on Nakuru men in tomorrow. Victory against Wazalendo and Nakuru will the students who are sixth on the standings earn six crucial points that will move them to the spot behind league leaders Butali Sugar Warriors and defending champions Kenya Police.

Butali who top the log with 42 points, second placed Police as well as Greensharks who are third will not be in action this weekend giving them an opportunity to position themselves among the top three title contenders. They however face an uphill task against Wazalendo who are fourth with 22 points and will also be out to improve their place on the log. Victory for Wazalendo will see them also dislodge Sharks from the third spot.

Double victory will also help Gladiators who are tied on 19 points with fifth placed Nairobi Sikh Union reduce the gap between them and the law enforcers who dethroned them last season to five points. Police have 30 points from 11 outings while Strathmore have played 14.

Strathmore coach Meshack Senge said they expect the best from the two ties.

ParaHockey gets Olympic showcase

At the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games, hockey's ‘Equally Amazing’ values will be highlighted by the Lionas ParaHockey teams who will take to the main competition field in the Youth Olympic Park for an exhibition of match on 13 October.

This discipline is played by athletes who have intellectual impairments but the rules are exactly the same for ParaHockey as for the other recognised disciplines. They will be joined by some surprise guests on they day who will help them showcase their skills to the fans taking in the Semi-Finals of the Hockey5s events.

The arrival of ParaHockey in Argentina is a relatively new phenomenon. It was introduced just over a year ago to a group of 12 girls with intellectual disabilities. That group has now extended to 37 and there are other clubs developing in the hockey strongholds of Mendoza, Cordoba and Salta.

The Pan American Hockey Federation (PAHF) has a dedicated Programme Officer for ParaHockey, Silvina Gorrisen, and she says that numerous coaches and players are getting on board, with a pool of 25 people available to run coaching sessions or manage teams.

Standing on the sideline of a hockey pitch in Argentina, one of the many coaches who dedicate their time to developing the skills – physical and social – for a group of youngsters known as 'Las Leanas', said: "I’m surprised every day, the skills are so impressive.” Indeed, these players are every bit as serious about their hockey as the likes of Argentinian superstars Delfina Merino, Noel Barrionuevo and co.

These youngsters are being drawn to hockey because of the fun, enjoyment and inclusive atmosphere it offers. And, with the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires under a month away, the spotlight is set to be turned more fully onto how ParaHockey is growing in Argentina.

Already played by thousands of people around the world, ParaHockey is getting a strong foothold in the hockey loving nation as more and more clubs in Argentina are joining the movement to make hockey as inclusive as possible.

At one training session more than 30 young people dribbled around cones, shot into goal and played small-sided games under the watchful eye of the coaches running the sessions. “I just love the sport so much,” said one young girl as she took a break from training.

Creating an inclusive environment within hockey for people with intellectual impairments is part of a wider movement to integrate people with disabilities as much as possible into everyday life. Sports such as hockey provide a range of benefits, including promoting healthy lifestyles, social contacts, self-confidence and independence and, of course, fun.

Such development programmes are great examples of National Associations engaging with the International Hockey Federation's Hockey Revolution strategy. With an aim of making hockey a global game that inspires future generations, Argentina's development of ParaHockey is an example of positive progress being made in the Pan American continent.

PHF secretary threatens ‘jealous’ elements with legal action

LAHORE: Secretary General Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Shahbaz Ahmad on Friday threatened legal action against those elements who are ‘jealous of progress made in the national game and are trying to defame it.’

In a press statement, Shahbaz said: “The PHF is a respectable national organization which has put Pakistan hockey on the right track as per the vision of the country’s Prime Minister.”

“For the preparation of the national team, the PHF has acquired the services of a very well reputed Dutch coach and an experienced Australian physical trainer. There has been consistent improvement in team’s performance ever since they took over which is visible to everyone.

“However, certain jealous elements are not happy with it. To gain cheap popularity in the general public, these people have resorted to illegal and immoral activities, especially through social media.

“All this is bringing a bad name to the national game. But PHF will not be blackmailed by any one and it will soon take legal action against them,” the secretary said.

“Unfortunately, some people we had trusted upon are now the biggest hurdle in the promotion of hockey at the grassroots level.

Plans are afoot to reinvigorate domestic hockey by employing capable coaches so as to prepare talented players for national teams,” he concluded.
