Two wins from two for Scotland in Lousada

Scotland men made it two wins from two with a 2-0 victory over Portugal at the Hockey Series Open in Lousada. Goals from Kyle White and Rob Harwood were the difference in a tough competitive match.

It was a frantic opening quarter with neither side gaining a foothold in the game. An injury to Russell Anderson, which saw him withdraw bloodied for treatment in the early stages, and a Robbie Shepherdson pass zipping across goal, were the two main points of note in the first quarter.

In the second quarter Shepherdson was having some joy for Scotland down the right flank, and another fizzing pass found Gavin Byers but his deflection went wide of the mark.

Scotland won a penalty corner and Kyle White’s effort led to the award of a penalty stroke for the Blue Sticks. Willie Marshall stepped up to strike it and a great save low to the right kept the scores on level terms.

Early in the third quarter Scotland scored the opening goal through Kyle White. Rob Harwood sent Cammy Golden running to the baseline, and he cut back for White who knocked the ball into the empty net for 1-0.

White very nearly added a second moments later when he took the ball past the goalkeeper but narrowly missed the target at a tight angle.

Tommy Alexander was forced into a solid near post save early in the final quarter as Portugal searched for an equaliser.

Harwood made the game safe for Scotland when he made it 2-0 from the penalty spot with a bottom left corner finish in Lousada.

Scotland will next face Gibraltar as they look to continue their 100% record at the tournament in Lousada

Debutant Evans Added To Hockeyroos Team For Four Nations

Ben Somerford

Hockey Australia today confirms Naomi Evans has been added to the Hockeyroos’ team for the upcoming Four Nations Women's Ibaraki International Tournament in Japan as an injury replacement.

Uncapped ACT forward Evans comes into the 18-member team due to a fractured thumb to uncapped Bundaberg teenager Rebecca Greiner.

Evans, 26, is currently in the National Women's Development Squad and spent time on a Visiting Athlete Agreement scholarship training with the National Women’s Senior Squad in Perth this year.

She hails from Goulburn in New South Wales but represents Australian Capital Territory in the Australian Hockey League.

Hockeyroos coach Paul Gaudoin said: “Naomi has been given the opportunity as goal scoring is an area where we need to continue to look for options.

“She’s an established athlete at 26-years-old and showed during her recent VAA scholarship that she can score goals, so that’s earned her this opportunity."

On Greiner, Gaudoin added: “It’s really unfortunate timing for Rebecca ahead of her potential debut, but we hope to see more from her soon.”

Third-ranked Australia will come up against South Korea (10th), United States (12th) and hosts Japan (14th) in the event which runs from 12-16 September at the OIC Field at the Ritsumeikan University Osaka Ibaraki Campus.

The event gives the Hockeyroos a taste of Japanese conditions with less than two years until the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The Hockeyroos team is due to fly to Japan on Thursday 6 September, ahead of their opening match of the Four Nations against Japan on Wednesday 12 September.

Follow @Hockeyroos on Twitter for match updates and @HockeyroosOfficial on Instagram throughout the Four Nations.

Turbulent route to Tokyo Olympics for India

Errol D’Cruz

After failing to book a direct flight to the Tokyo Olympics, India's men's and women's teams will now have to take the turbulent route to the Japanese capital in 2020.

It would entail two steps: Finishing among the top two in one of three 8-nation tournaments of the Hockey Series finals. This would gain India a berth in the Olympic Qualifying event comprising two back-to-back matches with another nation. There will 12 nations taking part in the qualifying event and will be paired based on rankings. The nation with a higher ranking will host the two-match series with the team that scores more goals on aggregate qualifying for the Olympics.

Four nations from the inaugural 9-nation Hockey Pro League set to be played from January to June book berths for the Olympic Qualifying event with another six from the new Hockey Series Finals in May and June. Joining them will be two highest ranked nations not having qualified via the continental championships, Hockey Pro League and Hockey Series.

Japan, by winning titles at the Jakarta Asian Games have already qualified as hosts and winning the gold medal has created a vacant spot. At the time of writing it is not clear how this would be filled but one expects two more nations with favourable rankings to be granted spots in the Olympic qualifying event.

The rankings would be taken to account after the completion of all continental championships next year.

After pulling out of the inaugural Hockey Pro League, India must hope for two things: Finish among the top two of one of three 8-Nation Hockey Series tournaments. After that, win their two-match series against another nation in the Olympic qualifying event.

If India fail to book a berth in the Olympic qualifiers via the Hockey Series, they must then hope for a high enough ranking to push them through to the qualifying event as one of two nations enjoying the privilege.

The Hockey Series Finals comprise 24 nations split into three 8-Nation tournaments. Nine top ranked nations from those that haven't already qualified as continental champions will join 15 lower ranked nations coming through earlier rounds of the global series.

SA IPT Under 21 Day 3 offers more goals as the favourites emerge

62 goals were scored across the 11 games on day 2 of the South African 2018 Under 21 IPT with only four of the 22 sides in action not getting on the scoresheet as the favourites put their names forwards as potential champions of the 2018 tournament.

In the six men’s matches only two were tight affairs as the Northern Blues, Southern Gauteng, Western Province and KZN Raiders all got comfortable victories to further underline their title credentials. In one of the other two games it was a narrow 3-1 win for North West over Mpumalanga thanks to goals from Pierre Bothma, Damian Tamine and Snyman Thessner while Landriu Scorgie got the only one for Mpumalanga. The real tight game was the exciting 2-2 draw between Eastern Province and Western Province Pens that required a goal from Michael Feldtman for Pens with the last play of game to snatch a draw. Andre Potgieter had given EP the lead before Malachy Barbour pegged them back. EP Regained the lead through the superb Laython Coombs before Feldtman’s intervention shared the points.

Northern Blues beat Witsies 7-0 with their PHL stars shining. Bradley Sherwood (2), Steven Paulo (2), Sam Mvimbi, Michael Forrest and Cody van Breemen were too much for the neighbours from Johannesburg. The Southern Gauteng first side were also too much for the Free State men with matching the score of the hosts in a 7-0 win. Keagan Smith got the tournament’s first hat-trick and further goals from Brandon Spence, Chris Makaba and two from Michael Newland-Nel kept Southerns undefeated after three days.

Western Province continued their fine form with a third win in three and Bulelani Ngqukuvana continued his form adding two more goals to his day 1 and 2 strikes. Nathan Loff added a third as the Cape side beat the Northern Daisies 3-0.  KZN Raiders bounced back from their day 2 defeat with an enthralling 10-3 win over Border. Border will be pleased with the second quarter which they won 1-0 through Keagan Hykes and the last quarter which they won 2-1 through Hykes and Keenan Trollip, but they were mauled in the first and third quarters conceding 4 and 5 goals without reply respectively. The Raiders goals were scored by Carlyle Volmink (4), Keegan Hezlett (2), Shane Bradbury (2), Lungani Gabela and Ryan Coleman.

Mens Under 21 IPT Results – Day 3

Pool A

Western Province 3-0 Northern Daisies
Western Province Pens 2-2 Eastern Province
North West 3-1 Mpumalanga

Pool B

Southern Gauteng 7-0 Free State
Northern Blues 7-0 SG Witsies
KZN Raiders 10-3 Border

In the ladies’ tournament it was business as usual for the hosts as they continued their fantastic defensive form in a 2-0 win over Eastern Province. Coach Inky Zondi is developing a reputation for defensive excellence and it showed once again as Mmamaoagi Kungoane and Ashleigh Thomas scored to see them safely home.

North West marched out to a 4-0 lead through Candice Silent, Carli Pretorius and a double from Anneke Beukman. Free State fought back with two goals from Shindre-lee Simmons and Lizanne Jacobs to set up a frenetic finish, but they could not find any more falling short.

It was five different goal scorers for Western Province as they easily overcame the SG Witsies side 5-1. Rebecca Kaps and international indoor player Jamie Southgate gave Province a 2-0 lead before Kiara Fitzhenry scored her third in three games to give Witsies hope. Unfortunately, that hope was distinguished by Nicole Koenig, Sasha Sivertson and Lenta Cullinan.

In today’s battle of the “B” sides the crowd were treated to a classic as Pens and the Daisies battled out an electrifying 2-2 draw. It was a 2-0 lead for Pens through Rozanne Compion and Estelle Stambolie, but the Daisies fought back and levelled through Ane Luus and Matika Ras. With the momentum on their side the Daisies surged forward but were unable to find the match winner.

The KZN Raiders would have been nervous of getting tested but like their mens side bounced back fantastically with a 6-0 win against Mpumalanga. Jessica Lardant, Bulelwa Mzimela, Cailynn den Bakker (2), Kiana Cormack and Tegan Fourie took the star-studded Raiders side to a comfortable victory.
