Scotland defeated by Ireland in second match of Celtic Series

Ireland won the second match of the Celtic Series 6-2 to make it two wins from two and a series victory for the visitors.

Ireland had the ball in the net early doors but it was ruled illegal by the umpire. The Irish wouldn’t be denied for long however and they took the lead through a rocket strike off the post and in by Emily Beatty.

It soon went to 2-0 soon after from a penalty corner finish. Lucy Camlin in goal for Scotland made an initial save but it fell kindly for Yvonne O’Bryne to score from close range.

Scotland won a penalty corner of their own after some good running by Laura Swanson and Sarah Jamieson. Emily Dark’s resulting drag flick however was well saved by the Ireland keeper keeping the score at 2-0 to Ireland.

As the quarter neared an end Ireland went 3-0 up with an excellent finish high into the net by Deirdre Duke.

Ireland hit the bar as they continued to pressurise Scotland in the second quarter. Then Scotland broke forward and won a penalty corner. This time Charlotte Watson’s drag flick zipped just wide of the target.

Ireland scored their fourth goal of the match early in the second half. It was Duke who bagged her second of the day when she lobbed the ball into an empty net for 4-0.

Ireland was then awarded a penalty stroke for a stick tackle and Zoe Wilson dispatched from the spot to make it 5-0.

Then Scotland pulled one back when Lucy Lanigan slid in to score from a penalty corner routine half way through Q3.

The Scots played some nice hockey in the fourth with Laura Swanson, Katie Robertson, and Bex Condie combining well.

Scotland scored again when Charlotte Watson nicked in in-front of the Irish goalkeeper to score for a second for Scotland. 5-2.

Almost immediately Ireland scored a fortunate sixth goal from a penalty corner through Anna O’Flanagan to make it 6-2 to the visitors with 46 seconds left to play.

The match ended with an Irish victory and a Celtic Series victory.

Green Army Put 6 Past Scotland

It was a different state of affairs in the second match of the series as the Green Army raced into a 3-0 lead inside the opening quarter. An early penalty corner shot pinged off the post only for Emily Beatty to pick up the rebound and put her side in front in the 4thminute. 4 minutes later and the lead was doubled by Yvonne O’Byrne from another effective penalty corner routine. Emily Dark posed the first threat for Scotland as she sent a PC drag flick towards Emma Buckley’s goal but the Cork Harlequins keeper made a strong save. Deirdre Duke made it 3-0 with an unstoppable shot high into the net, leaving Lucy Camlin little chance. The Green Army didn’t take their foot off the peddle despite the lead and Beatty was again in on goal but this time her shot clipped the crossbar. Roisin Upton was denied after a well worked PC variation from Ireland’s 4thcorner and the Scottish defence recovered well from an early Irish onslaught.

The goals didn’t stop though and Ellen Curran added to her sides tally 2 minutes into the second half. Minutes later the lead was extended as a bad tackle on Anna O’Flanagan in the circle saw the Green Army awarded a penalty stroke which Zoe Wilson duly dispatched into the goal. Lucy Lanigan got Scotland on the scoresheet as she got a sliding touch from a penalty corner strike to clip the ball past Buckley. Hannah Matthews picked up a green card and Charlotte Watson made full use of the player advantage to slip in front of Buckley for her team’s second goal. But the Green Army ended on a high with a penalty corner goal from O’Flanagan in the final minute of the game.

Malaysia end Argentina tour with sole victory

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia finally got the better of reigning Olympic champions Argentina to secure their first win in their final hockey Test match in Buenos Aires on Friday.

The Malaysian team had lost 0-1, 1-6, 2-7, 1-2 in the first four matches in Mar Del Plata before holding Argentina to a 1-1 draw in the fifth Test match on Thursday.

National coach Stephen Van Huizen was glad to finally end their tour with a win.

Malaysia got off to a perfect start after midfielder Muhammad Shahril Saabah scored a field goal in the 18th minute and striker Muhammad Haziq Samsul doubled the lead, also from a field goal in the 22nd minute.

Argentina reduced the deficit through Pedro Ibarra’s penalty corner in the 41st minute but the Malaysians held their fort to deny Argentina from snatching a draw.

“They kept coming at us but we fought hard to keep them out and we counter-attacked when we won possession,” said Stephen.

“We defended well in the end to earn a deserved win. Proud of the players and the turnaround in the last two games,” he said.

Stephen said all the hard work over the last three weeks has helped the players to play till the end.

“It was our best game on the tour ... It was a tough match and we had to work hard all the way.

“They tried every trick and pushed us to work very hard for the win. Our physical condition is much better after the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and the tempo of the games were very high,” Stephen said

The Test series is part of Malaysia’s preparation for the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games in August where the national side is hoping to win the gold medal and secure an automatic slot to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Malaysia confident of hosting World Series Finals next year

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) have an alternative plan to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics if they fail to win a ticket as Asian Games champions.

The back-up plan is to qualify through the hosting of the Hockey World Series Finals in Malaysia next year.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) have offered Malaysia to be host of the Men’s World Series Final. The top two teams from the World Series Finals will qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

MHC president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said they would be bidding to host the men’s World Cup in 2022 and the women’s World Cup in 2021 as well.

Subahan said the men’s target was to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics by winning the gold medal at the Indonesia Asian Games from Aug 18-Sept 2 but if they fail, they can qualify as one of the top two teams in the World Series Finals.

“I have no doubt about the team winning the gold medal at the Indonesia Asian Games and qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics but hosting the World Series Finals and finishing top two in the tournament will be our contingency plan,” said Subahan after chairing the MHC executive board meeting here yesterday.

“FIH have approached us to host the World Series Finals and we’ll take their offer and we’re also keen to host the men’s and women’s World Cup.

“I’m quite sure we will get to host the World Series Finals. As for the World Cup, we need to do the bidding and will be in communication with FIH.”

Subahan said Malaysia had the infrastructures and facilities to host world class events.

“We’ve one of the best hockey stadiums in the world, good hotels and transportation. We’ll not have problems to win the bids,” said Subahan.

Malaysia last hosted the men’s World Cup in 2002 where they finished eighth out of 16 teams. They also hosted the men’s World Cup in 1975 and finished fourth out of 12 teams.

As for the women’s World Cup, Malaysia hosted the 12-team tournament in 1983 but the national women’s team did not participate.
