Penalty corners may be decisive factor in KLHC-UniKL clash

By Aftar Singh

In good hands: Besides Muhd Razie Abdul Rahim (top), KLHC have South Korean Jang Jong-hyun to rely on to take penalty corners against UniKL today.

KUALA LUMPUR: Penalty corners could prove decisive in the Tan Sri P. Alagendra Cup semi-final between Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club (KLHC) and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL).

KLHC boast two penalty corner specialists in South Korea’s Jang Jong-hyun and national player Muhd Razie Abdul Rahim.

Jong-hyun, last year’s top scorer in the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) with 16 goals, and Razie converted one penalty corner each in the 2-1 win over Tenaga Nasional in the quarter-finals on Thursday.

Razie was MHL top scorer in 2010 where he delivered 27 goals to help KLHC win the double – league and overall titles.

UniKL, who are in their first-ever semi-final in the knockout tournament, are depending on the agile goalkeeper David Harte to prevent Jong-hyun and Razie from scoring.

The Ireland captain is one of the world’s best keepers but he admits he’ll have his hands full trying to contain Jong-hyun and Razie.

“We have good defensive players but we hope that we can stop Jong-hyun and Razie from executing the penalty corners,” said Harte, who was named the International Hockey Federation (FIH) best goalkeeper in 2015 and 2016.

Harte, also named Europe’s best keeper in 2015, was hardly tested in UniKL’s first two matches.

UniKL, powered by six foreigners, thrashed Selangor 10-0 in the first round on Wednesday. They went on to maul Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Tigers 6-0 in the quarter-finals.

KLHC didn’t have to play in the first round after their opponents Kedah pulled out of the tournament.

In the last eight, KLHC edged Tenaga 2-1 – converting two of their three penalty corners.

KLHC coach Lim Chiow Chuan said they must make all their penalty corners count against UniKL.

“Jong-hyun and Razie must be just as clinical as they were in the quarter-finals. And Harte won’t be an easy keeper to beat,” said the former national assistant coach.

Terengganu lose services of injured Argentine forward Barreiros

No play: Terengganu player Lopez Barreiros of Argentina will be out of action for two weeks.

KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu forward Lopez Barreiros will be out of action for two weeks.

The Argentina forward was hit by a ball above the left eye in the Tan Sri P. Alagendra Cup quarter-final match against Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Thursday.

Barreiros was rushed to hospital and later underwent a minor surgery.

Terengganu coach Sarjit Singh said Barreiros received 15 stitches and has been advised by the doctor to rest for two weeks.

“We’ll miss his services for the next two weeks. But we’re ready to continue our good form in the Tan Sri P. Alagendra Cup,” said Sarjit.

Defending champions Terengganu, who trounced UiTM 9-0 in the last eight, face TNB-Thunderbolt in the semi-finals today.

Terengganu received a bye in the first round. Last year, the East Coast team outplayed Thunderbolt 7-3 in the first round.

This time, Thunderbolt can expect another big-margin defeat as Terengganu are powered by the world’s top penalty corner specialist Gonzalo Peillat of Argentina. The 25-year-old Peillat converted two penalty corners against UiTM despite being jet-lagged.

Thunderbolt also have to watch out for national forward Faizal Saari, who converted five penalty corners against UiTM.

Thunderbolt coach Mohd Amin Rahim admitted they were no match for Terengganu.

“Our team is made up of school kids with an average age of 19,” said Mohd Amin.

“Our goalkeeper Muhammad Fahmi Zakaria will struggle to stop the penalty corners and field attempts. But my players will learn a lot from playing such a top-quality side.”

All change for Oranje-Rood coach Judge in 2018

©: Frank Uijlenbroek / World Sport Pics

It’s all change for Lucas Judge in 2018 as he has linked up with fellow Australia Alyson Annan to work as one of the Dutch women’s assistant coaches.

On the flip side, the 35-year-old has agreed to part company with Oranje-Rood at the end of the current Hoofdklasse season following the completion of his second year with the club. Judge will work with the Oranje women until at least the end of the World Cup in London this summer.

Reflecting on the situation at Oranje-Rood, Judge said to the Eindhovens Dagblad: “The objective remains unchanged. We want to secure a playoff spot as soon as possible.

"But it's best for everyone for our roads to separate after this season. My vision and what I find important is different from that of a part of the group of players. That can happen."

Judge coached the Eindhoven club to the final of the Euro Hockey League, eventually claiming a silver medal, but they missed out on a return visit to the competition. They currently sit fourth in the Hoofdklase, seven points off leaders Bloemendaal but with four points to spare over fifth place Rotterdam.

Frank Moran

Scottish Hockey is sad to announce the passing of Frank Moran. Frank, who played a vital part in making Dundee Wanderers history, passed away on 28 December and will be missed by his family and Wanderers, at home and abroad.

In 1973 Frank was the Wanderers ‘keeper when the 1st team won the Scottish Cup in a 2-1 penalty shoot-out after a goalless 70 minutes, and then played a vital part in the shoot-out win over the ‘favourites Inverleith with Dave McMahon and Brian (Cuj) Cumming netting the goals.

In 1990 Frank was the man behind the Camera whose photo showed the  Wanderers ball hitting the back-boards for the 1-0 win in that Cup Final with MIM / Edinburgh CALA

Off the field Frank gave sterling service as one of the clubs’ principal fundraisers and organisers of the Club Annual Dinner dances.

A Scotland international, Frank was unfortunate during his playing career to be at a time when a number of accomplished ‘keepers were around and his International ‘Tally’ was limited to a handful of Indoor Caps

Our thoughts will be with Frank’s wife, Jackie, and family, especially on Thursday 11th January at the Funeral service at 12.30pm at the Dundee Crematorium.
