Ballot Cases 17:00 GMT on 6 September

England Hockey is reporting incredible demand for Hockey Women's World Cup London 2018 tickets with 85,000 having now been applied for.
The ballot closes on 6 September so the time to act is now! With this high demand for World Cup tickets we are advising the following to help maximise your chances of securing tickets:

  •     Apply for higher priced tickets for 'England' or knockout sessions, or tick the upgrade box.
  •     Don't just look at the England matches! The best players and teams in the world are playing in every session.
  •     Midweek matches offer great value and have lower demand.
  •     All weekend sessions offer a brilliant day out for the whole family.
  •     All England pool games, the Quarter Final, Semi Final and Final are going to sell out in this ballot.
  •     So if you want to see England or the big knockout games, the only way to get tickets for those matches is to enter the ballot before 6pm on Wednesday 6 Sep.
  •     In total, more than 85,000 tickets have been applied for on top of the 21,000 purchased by hockey clubs earlier in the year.
  •     If you want to be at this World Cup, make sure you apply for other sessions as well as England.

This massive event will be held at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and will see England’s women take on the very best in the pinnacle of the sport.

How can I secure my tickets?

Due to the incredibly high demand for tickets, we are running a ballot system to ensure everyone gets a fair chance to get the tickets they would like. This ballot is now live and will close at 6pm on Wednesday 6 September.

You simply need to register, select which sessions and tickets you’d like and give payment details. You will not be charged at this point. The ballot will then be drawn after the 6 September and if successful you will be notified and charged for your tickets by the end of September. Please note, once you have entered the ballot you can log back in and amend your order up until 6pm on 6 September.

What has happened so far?

A Hockey Family priority ticket sale was launched in April 2017 where an unprecedented 21,000 tickets were sold in the two weeks the window was open, a gold rush to see Pure Hockey Gold! This demonstrates the huge demand there is for tickets, so make sure you enter the ballot now!

How can I ensure I see England play when applying for tickets in the ballot?

Whilst we don’t know the full schedule as some teams still need to qualify, we have plotted when hosts England will play each game so you can ensure you select these tickets in the ballot.

You can have a look at the schedule here, and remember – the England sessions are going to sell out, so consider applying for another match as well to give yourself the best opportunity to be at this once in a lifetime event.

I’ve never been to an international hockey event before, will this be a good day out?

In short, yes! Hockey is a brilliant sport to watch live, and this tournament will showcase just how fast-paced, action packed and highly skilled the game is. You’ll be able to see English members of the Great Britain Olympic squad battling for gold to go alongside their Olympic Gold medal and we are planning the biggest fan zone we’ve ever staged for a hockey event ensuring there will be something for all the family to enjoy.

Which teams will be playing?

As well as England, the Netherlands, Argentina, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, China, Korea, Japan, Italy and South Africa have all qualified so far and will be going for Gold in London next year. With the top 9 teams in the World all qualified, England will need all the home support they can get so make sure you are ready to cheer them on!

Should I wait until general sale to buy England tickets?

In a word, no! General sale will be at a later date to be announced, but if you want the best chance of England tickets then you should enter the ballot! All England Pool tickets will sell out in the Public Ballot so if you want to watch us on home soil then make sure you apply in the Ballot.

Hertzberger hat trick hands Rotterdam their fifth ABN AMRO Cup title

HC Rotterdam won the ABN AMRO Cup for the fifth time in ten years as they delighted their home crowd with a 3-2 win over AH&BC Amsterdam on Sunday.

Rotterdam had beaten Oranje-Rood to reach the final while Amsterdam edged out Kampong 4-3 in the annual curtain-raiser for the new Dutch season.

In the final, Jeroen Hertzberger put the Rotterdammers 2-0 ahead only for Justin Reid-Ross to tie the game back up with two penalty corners. With his third goal of the afternoon, however, Hertzberger decided the final in Rotterdam.

In the third place match, Oranje-Rood beat national champion Kampong 7-1 in what is the last barometer of how sides will fare ahead of the return of the Dutch league in a couple of weeks.

At the same venue, it was also the final day of the ABN AMRO 3 vs 3 Cup for Under-14s with Dutch star Jorrit Croon presenting prizes to HC Zwolle and Schaerweijde following their respective success.

Ernst Boekhorst, ABN AMRO’s head of sponsorship, said: "The ABN AMRO Cup was again a great start for a new hockey season in the Hoofdklasse. This edition was enriched with the final of the 3 vs 3 World Cup for the youth, bringing these talents even closer to their hockey heroes."

India women hockey team to face Belgium junior men's team

BENGALURU: After the three-week national camp at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre in Bengaluru, the Indian women hockey squad will leave for the Europe Tour on Monday night from the Kempegowda International Airport.

The 18-member Indian team will be captained by striker Rani while in-form goalkeeper Savita will shoulder the duties of vice-captain. The team will play four matches during their tour, the first and third of which will be against Ladies Den Bosch club on September 8 and 15 in Netherlands. They will also play two matches against the Belgium junior men's team on September 11 and 18 in Antwerp, Belgium.

"This is the first time we are playing a junior men's national team. While we play a lot of practice matches with the junior men's side during our national camps, the team is excited to be playing against Belgium's junior team which is the Junior World Cup finalist. It will be challenging no doubt, but I am confident we will learn a lot from this exposure," stated captain Rani Rampal, ahead of the team's departure.

The Europe Tour will be a good experience ahead of the all-important Asia Cup next month in Japan where the team will look to win the title.

Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne said: "The idea of playing the men's team was to toughen our team mentally and also the pace of the game will be much faster. The national camp was good as we played two matches with the men's team here in Bengaluru every week and the girls have put in a lot of hard work in this camp.

"Asia Cup is important and in my opinion, at the moment the Indian team is the No.1 side in Asia and there's no doubt that we will be gunning for the title.

Odisha gears up for international hockey events

Minati Singha

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha government has planned a major infrastructure boost and augment facilities ahead of two international hockey events in the city. Kalinga Stadium will host Men's Hockey World League in December 2017 and Men's Hockey World Cup in 2018.

"In 2018 Men's Hockey World Cup is a prestigious and big international sporting event. For this the practice stadium in Kalinga Stadium premises will be developed as a second stadium. The world cup will continue for around three weeks so the arrangements will be in a much bigger scale than the recently concluded Asian Athletics Championships," said chief secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi.

The capacity of the hockey stadium will be increased from 9000 to 20,000 before the Hockey World Cup and two more galleries will be added in north and south side of the stadium. "Around 16 countries will participate in the world cup and nearly 25,000 foreign visitors will come to the city to witness the event. All possible accommodation for the visitors will be exploited," said sports secretary Vishal Dev.

Besides, roads inside the stadium will be widened and facilities like food court and recreation hall will be constructed by October 2018, he added.

Reviewing the preparations at a high level meeting here on Monday, Padhi asked the sports and tourism department to make elaborate arrangements for accommodation of players, officials and visitors coming to the state during the sports events.

"Detail information of hotels, guest houses and home stays available in Puri, Cuttack and Bhubaneswar should be provided online. And provision of prior booking should also be made available for visitors," Padhi added.

Top teams from eight countries including India, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, England, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain will participate in the Men's Hockey World League, to be held in December 2017. Around 22 matches will be played during the tournament.

"Earlier hockey matches have been conducted in Odisha successfully. We hope the two mega hockey events will also be conducted efficiently," said Elena Norman, chief executive officer of Hockey India League.

Hockey India goes the BCCI way, to advertise for head coach

Indranil Basu

NEW DELHI: It seems that Hockey India (HI) is taking a leaf out of the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) book. In a first-of-its kind move, the HI is going to advertise for the post of head coach.

Till now, HI used to seek candidates' applications but this time around they are going to find Roeland Oltmans' replacement through an advertisement. Sources told TOI that the entire process could take between two to three months and an interim arrangement will be put in place to guide the senior hockey team before the new head coach takes over.

Sources also said that the advertisement for the head coach will be put up on the HI website along with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) portal at the earliest. HI will pick up only three applicants and they will be interviewed by a panel of hockey experts along with SAI and government officials.

It was also revealed that HI could take some time for the visa formality and work permit before signing on the dotted line with the new coach. The HI officials also admitted that it would take a little longer because of the advertising process. "We will make an interim arrangement for the senior team when they play two important tournaments in next two months or so," a HI source said.

So, why was Oltmans removed? Apparently, the former Dutch coach was becoming too predictable and the team needed a new way of thinking to tackle the opposition. "It could also be a foreign coach again who could replace Oltmans. But you can't really rule out an Indian too," the official added.

Maryland field hockey endured first-half struggles in its two weekend losses

Head coach Missy Meharg walks to sideline after discussing plays with players during the Terps' 5-2 win against New Hampshire on Sep. 19, 2015.

By Scott Gelman

After a surprising second-round NCAA tournament exit last season, Maryland field hockey is off to a slow start. It lost both its games this past weekend at the Big Ten/ACC Cup due to offensive struggles. Here are takeaways from the contests:

Maryland field hockey coach Missy Meharg occasionally opted to relieve goalkeeper Sarah Holliday last season, giving Sarah Bates a handful of starting opportunities.

But because Bates is no longer with the program, Holliday has been tasked with starting Maryland's first three games this season. In the ACC/Big Ten Cup in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Holliday responded, recording a career-high 12 saves in a 2-0 loss to No. 2 Duke on Friday night.

Holliday was tested from the outset, as the Blue Devils' potent attack attempted nine shots in the first half and another 11 after the intermission. She tallied six saves in the first and seven in the second, a sign that despite Maryland's offensive struggles, Meharg might not have to concern herself with who will start in goal in the coming weeks.

"She's playing well in practices," Meharg said Friday. "Her mentality is good. She's very even keel. I'm not surprised by that outcome. She has a very good game."

Holliday was similarly effective in more than 65 minutes in goal Sunday against No. 12 Boston College, earning three saves and holding the Eagles to a pair of scores.

The Clarksville native appeared in 17 contests last season and made 13 starts. Holliday has experience facing the nation's top teams, having recorded a combined 11 saves early last season against Syracuse and Boston College. Both were ranked in the top 10 at the time.
Despite slow starts, Maryland’s second half performances impressed Meharg

The Terps were swept in Lancaster, falling to the Blue Devils and the Eagles. The Terps' attack struggled in both contests as they scored once over the two-game span.

Nonetheless, Meharg praised Maryland's second-half efforts in both matches.

Maryland was unable to score after intermission against Duke, who were similarly held off the board in the second.

On Sunday, led by defender Bodil Keus' shot off of a penalty corner opportunity, Maryland cut Boston College's deficit in half in the second period. Meharg said the Eagles were "physically very tough on our forwards," contributing to the limited output.

Still, on both occasions, the No. 6 Terps fell short.

"I think the second halves of both games were very good," Meharg said. "Very defensive field hockey. We're definitely growing as a team."
