India beat Austria 4-3 in a thriller

NEW DELHI: Ramandeep Singh and Chinglensana Singh scored a brace each to help Indian men's hockey team end its 'Tour of Europe' on a high. India registered a thrilling 4-3 victory against Austria in their fifth and final match of the tour at Amstelveen in Netherlands on Wednesday.

It was Chinglensana's goal in the dying seconds which sealed the win for India, after they conceded two late goals to give Austria a chance for a comeback.

It was India's third victory on the trot, after beating the Netherlands in consecutive games. The young side led by Manpreet Singh finished their five-match European tour with three wins and two defeats.

Austria took the lead early in the first quarter, before Ramandeep scored the equaliser in the Q2 through a penalty corner.

India put the pressure on the Austrians by creating more penetrations through the midfield as the game progressed. But they couldn't convert them to goals and went into the half-time break with score reading 1-1.

India started the third quarter aggressively and Ramandeep thundered in a screamer through a reverse hit from the top of the circle to put the visitors in front for the first time in the match.

The constant pressure resulted in another goal for India, with Chinglensana tapping in the ball into the nets after receiving a clever pass from Varun Kumar.

With less than ten minutes left in the match, Austria scored two quick goals to level the scores and left the Indian side stunned. But India vice-captain Chinglensana scored a brilliant goal with just ten seconds left on the clock to give India a well-deserved victory.

India started the tour on a wrong note and lost both their matches against fifth-ranked Belgium. But the sixth-ranked India came out strongly in the second phase of the tour and defeated the higher-ranked Netherlands (world number four) twice in two games to resurrect their tour.

Six uncapped players were included in the Manpreet-led squad for this tour. Chinglensana was named Manpreet's deputy while some of the key players who featured in the World League Semi-Final were rested.

Korper looking to make more Wagener Stadium memories

©: Frank Uijlenbroek/world Sport Pics

Austrian goal-machine Michael Körper is looking forward to making his mark at the new Wagener Stadium, a venue he has many fond memories of for both club and country.

The Harvestehuder THC club man scored a brilliant hat trick there to stun Oranje-Zwart in the Euro Hockey League KO8 in 2016, fighting back from 4-1 down before he fired in the winning shoot-out.

With Austria, his time was less auspicious but still holds a special place for him. Eight years ago in 2009 was the last time they played in the top level of the EuroHockey Championships with Körper making his way in the international game.

His side finished seventh overall with the striker scoring a couple of goals in their memorable 5-4 win over Poland. They also gave Germany a major scare, locking it at 1-1 until the closing 10 minutes before Christoper and Philipp Zeller scored a goal each to ease the tension.

“It was just a pleasure to play there. I enjoyed every minute we played there,” Körper recalled about the event in an interview with the Euros tournament website. “The game against Germany was a good one; we scored our first A-pool goal there so I have good memories from that time.

“Since we haven’t been there since 2009, we know that its gonna be a hard job to hold on to our status but we know that and are gonna work hard on our goals.”

Körper is one of a couple of genuine superstars in the side along with Oranje-Rood’s Benjamin Stanzl. He scored an incredible 46 times the German league last season and also top scored in the Hockey World League Round 2 in March in Ireland with eight goals, showing his hunger for finding the net, making it over 50 strikes in the past year.

He has been one of the country’s trailblazers in trying to raise the level by moving to the bigger leagues around Europe. With smaller resources and playing numbers than many of their rivals at the Europeans, he says that this approach is a requirement if they are to close the gap to the the top nations.

“As an Austrian player, you can just try to play a higher level to raise the level of the national team. We have now a lot of players who are playing abroad: 10 in Germany, one in Holland and Belgium and we also have players who a gonna play next year in Belgium and Germany.

“But its not only the players are working on that, the federation is doing its best and also our coach is trying to set down a perfect preparation for us.”

That included the Hamburg Masters tournament in June before facing test matches in Vienna against Wales, Russia and Poland.

“We learnt a lot at the Hamburg Masters. We were behind the other teams but they had a better preparation because they were going to play the Hockey World League Semi-Final.

“But I think we did a good job and got to know on what topics we have to work on before the Europeans. We have to reduce the mistakes in marking. In a high level tournament, you are going to be punished. Things like that, we are going to have to work hard on until the Europeans.”

They face three really tough group opponents with the Netherlands and Belgium – the winners of the two Hockey World League Semi-Finals – along with Spain.

“I think it doesn’t matter which group we are in. It’s gonna be a hard job for us and we have to think from game to game. With self-confidence and a good discipline, I think we can surprise some people and teams there. But lets wait and see!”

The EHF and Sportradar launch EuroHockeytv.org (EHTV)

With the Rabo EuroHockey Championships just two days away, the EHF is launching EuroHockeytv.org (EHTV) based on Sportradar’s OTT platform.

In 2017 the EHF launched its Strategic Plan 2017-2024, where they committed to being proactive, innovative and influential in the sports world. This commitment saw the EHF streaming over 180 matches with a great response from hockey fans who have watched millions of minutes of hockey this year.

The next logical step is to create a home for European Hockey streaming. EHTV will provide fans with free live games from the Rabo EuroHockey Championships and the Euro Hockey League, in addition to many of indoor and outdoor championships at all levels. EHTV will also make a huge archive of games available for fans to watch back at their leisure.

All that is required to watch live matches is a one-time registration. Fans will also get additional Video on Demand (VOD) content of archived events and short clips.

Speaking about the launch, Angus Kirkland, EHF Director General said: “The EHF is delighted to announce, in partnership with Sportradar, the launch of its own streaming platform – http://www.eurohockeytv.org.

“Part of our strategic plan, aligned to the FIH, is to be fan focused and this new partnership will take us to the next level in engaging fans. Since 2016, the EHF have been streaming many of our events. The new platform will provide a home for European Hockey fans with free of charge access to the best hockey across Europe.

"It will also provide our member associations an outlet to showcase their events and engage the broader European community.”

Rainer Geier, Managing Director OTT for Sportradar added: “It has been a real pleasure developing a tailored and unique OTT proposition that suits the EHF’s circumstances, stakeholder group and focus. After all, not every federation is the same and so our suggested solution cannot have a cookie-cutter approach.

"We are excited to see EHTV go live and are confident that this will strengthen the strong bond between the EHF, its Member Associations and the fans that love this exciting sport.”

*In some territories, games at the Rabo EuroHockey Championships will be GEO blocked due to broadcast arrangements in those territories, for full details go to the official website (click here)

Hockey masterpiece held in the ‘Far East’

It was a stick-swinging, goal-scoring, social sporting affair of note.

Benoni Northerns Sports Club's general manager Rodney Scheepers turned out for an Eastern Gauteng Invitational side at the 2017 Masters Tournament.

It was the South African Masters Hockey Association’s 2017 National Masters Tournament and it came to Benoni and Ekurhuleni from August 9 to 12.

It is the largest field hockey events in the country in terms of the number of participants, with almost 70 teams and over 1 200 players and officials from around the country welcomed to the “Far East”.

The popular tourney was organised by the Eastern Gauteng Masters Hockey Association (EMHA) for the first time since 1992 with matches played at the Eastern Gauteng Hockey Association (EGHA) AstroTurf, at Benoni Northerns Sports Club’s (BNSC) grass fields, at the St Dunstan’s College AstroTurf and grass fields and at the recently constructed St Dominic’s School AstroTurf in Boksburg.

The EGHA Astro snapped from the air ahead of the tournament.

For the first time ever a downloadable smartphone app was made available to players, officials and spectators with all the important information.

Daily shuttle buses ran regularly for players and officials to be ferried to and fro, ensuring that participants arrived at their respective hotels. All matches and events were started promptly and everyone returned home safely and timeously.

Eastern Gauteng umpire Caswell Chiloane officiated a number of matches throughout the tournament.

According to EGMHA chairman Gary Talbot, the Masters was “a huge success for local hockey” and a lot of fun for all involved.

“Eastern Gauteng hockey has found its place again on the South African hockey stage.

“Obviously there were some teething problems and a few gripes from the residents around the area, but this tournament only comes around every 25 years or so.

“I would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to residents and I thank them for their patience.

“We have received countless compliments and accolades from our visitors from around the country.

“The tournament also served as excellent marketing for Ekurhuleni and helped support the local economy.”

Talbot thanked Benoni Northerns, St Dunstan’s and St Dominic’s for ensuring that the players enjoyed top-class facilities during their time here.

Tournament director Patricia Read said that the local organising committee has already been asked to share some of their notes with next year’s coastal host, KwaZulu-Natal.

Rodney Scheepers, general manager of BNSC (the hub of the tournament) said: “Players mentioned that they were most grateful for playing on the best grass fields prepared in many years.

“In addition, the Northerns club buildings have recently been upgraded which allowed for better flow and use of the premises for the tournament and will do for many years to come.

“The committees of both EGMHA and BNSC would like to thank all the volunteers and members for their massive contributions to the ultimate success of the tournament.

“Thanks to the Benoni public for their patience and understanding in having to put up with the traffic snarl-ups in the area, some of the ‘antics’ of the participants and for any other inconvenience that we may have caused for the duration of the tournament.”

Trinidad and Tobago FIH Grade I umpire Ayanna Mc Clean leaves for Asia today to officiate at the China National Games.

The former Ventures and national hockey team defender recently returned from the World League Round Three in South Africa.

Mc Clean, who turns 35 tomorrow, was very excited about the FIH World League Round 3 assignment in South Africa.

“It was a whirlwind of an experience. From the preparation to the competition and not to be forgotten, the location. Luckily we were there for quite some time, (it being) both men’s and women’s competitions, as I got injured in my first game,” she explained in a recent FIH interview.

“As a result, I spent two game days and what worked out to be a week being the second video umpire, a role of which I am familiar. When I was finally able to get back on the pitch, I was even more focused on being my better, best from each game.”
