Changes have been made to the Hockeyroos’ World League Semi-Final team who will depart for Europe this Sunday, June 11.

Injuries have ruled Mariah Williams and Gabi Nance out of the team, with both expected to be building back into full training within 4 – 6 weeks.

In their place, Laura Barden and Kate Hanna will make the trip over to Brussels to contest the Semi-Final which acts as a qualifier for not only the World League Finals which will be held in Auckland, New Zealand later this year, but also for the World Cup which will be held in London in July 2018.

Hockeyroos head coach Paul Gaudoin said: “Unfortunately Gabi and Mariah have sustained injuries in training – Gabi to her calf and Mariah to her adductor, which will rule them out for World League Semi-Final.

“This is another opportunity for individuals and the group to grow in experience and test themselves against some of the best teams in the world.”

Richard Hildreth replaces injured James Kirkpatrick on World League team

Kori Sidaway

During the first two minutes of Game 1 in the French Exhibition Series, forward James Kirkpatrick fell onto some bad luck and came out with a broken collarbone.

While Kirkpatrick is set to fly back to Canada for surgery, midfielder Richard Hildreth  has stepped onto the pitch as Kirkpatrick’s replacement. Paul Bundy, Men’s National Team Interim Head Coach, says calling up Hildreth was positionally strategic for the team.

“We’re replacing a forward with a midfielder. We want to get more offensive and put some of our attacking midfielders up in the forward line. So bringing in another midfielders just secures that area for us.” – Paul Bundy, Men’s National Team Interim Head Coach

Hildreth is a Men’s National Team veteran, having played for Canada in more than 130 international games. His career highlights begin in 2004 when he stepped on the pitch for Canada in South Africa, winning gold at the Rio, Brazil 2007 Pan Am Games and playing in the 2010 FIH Hockey World Cup.

Previous to reuniting with Canada’s men, Hildreth had been playing for Surbiton Hockey Club in England.

You can catch Hildreth and the Men’s National Team next week when they take on the FIH Hockey World League Semi-Finals in London from June 15th-25th.

Pakistan urged to focus on qualifying for Hockey World Cup

ISLAMABAD: Former hockey Olympian Tahir Zaman has urged Pakistan to keep their focus on qualifying for next year’s World Cup instead of paying too much attention to their upcoming World Hockey League (WHL) semi-final clash against archrivals India scheduled for June 18.

After their face-off in a cricket Champions Trophy clash which Pakistan lost, both the traditional rivals will be seen in action in the WHL semi-final in London.

Talking to APP on Thursday, Tahir said Indo-Pak matches irrespective of any sport are the most profit-making showdowns in the world.

“It will be a game of nerves but I am optimistic that Pakistan would come out victorious,” the ex-Olympian maintained, but added “our main focus should remain on qualifying for the World Cup.”

“Green-shirts should now take each and every match seriously, since last time we failed to qualify for the World Cup,” lamented Tahir who said though Pakistan did not play well in the series against Ireland but “I am hopeful our team would do well in the WHL semi final and would qualify for the World Cup.”

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) is making all-out efforts to encourage and promote the game, he said. “The PHF has revived departments like Fauji Fertilizers and ZTBL who are providing jobs to players,” he added while stating that players in the past were not provided jobs.

“But now players have been able to keep full focus on their game, for they feel secure after having job surety,” he maintained.

On the other hand, Tahir said Pakistan Hockey League (PHL) was the need of the hour to groom and promote players. “Hopefully, the PHF will organize the league soon,” he maintained.

Teams to feel the heat as National Hockey meet enters Day 5

Being in a hot city like Lucknow has not deterred Hockey India from planning an action-planned 5th day of the National Hockey Championship 2017.

LUCKNOW: The hot and humid conditions in Lucknow notwithstanding, Hockey India has planned a record 13 matches on the fifth day of the 7th Senior National Hockey Championship 2017 (men) ‘B’ Division on Friday.

The morning matches start at as early as 6 am at Major Dhyanchand stadium and Padmashree Mohd Shahid Stadium. The players of Manipur Hockey will have to face the problem as they are bound to play against Madhya Pradesh under the scorching sun at 12 noon, at the Padmashree Mohd Shahid stadium.

“It will be very painful at least for Manipur players who hardly see temperature going above 30 in their region. I strongly feel that Hockey India should avoid such situations for players. Championship are nothing but an annual mela where getting a job remains the only target for domestic players,” a team coach told HT on condition of anonymity.

Seven matches will be played at pitch two while six matches are scheduled at pitch one on Friday. This isn’t all as Sunday and Monday will also witness 10 matches in a day. “It’s going to be around 40 degrees Celsius over the next few days and humidity will be between 46-48%. Playing 70-minute hockey isn’t a good idea for any one,” said a player.

A Hockey India official, who refused to be named on the issue, conceded that timing of the event wasn’t good and if this had to be organised in June, the event should have been conducted in place like Bangalore, where weather is conducive.

“It is cooler in Bengaluru as compared to a city like Lucknow,” he said.

Meanwhile, favourites Petroleum Sports Control Board and Central Industrial Security Force booked their berths in quarterfinals, notching up their third consecutive win in respective pools here on Thursday.

In Pool A, PSCB brushed aside Hockey Maharashtra 8-5, whereas CISF defeated Sports Authority of Gujarat Hockey Academy 4-1 in a Pool C encounter. In other matches of the day, Hockey Andhra Pradesh beat Hockey Andaman and Nicobar 8-1 to record their first victory of the tournament in Pool B, Telangana Hockey edged out Major Port Sports Control Board 3-2 in Pool A, and in Pool B, Delhi Hockey and Hockey Him played out an entertaining 4-4 draw.

And before the day proceedings could come to an end, Vidarbha Hockey Association beat Hockey Uttarakhand 4-1 in Pool C.

FRIDAY’S FIXTURES

At Mohd Shahid stadium (6.00 a.m.): Hockey Rajasthan vs Petroleum Sports Promotion Board; 7.30 am: Central Reserve Police Force vs Hockey Himachal; 9.00 am: Hockey Coorg vs Sports Authority of Gujarat - Hockey Academy; 10.30 am: Central Secretariat vs Goans Hockey; 12.00 noon: Manipur Hockey vs Hockey Madhya Bharat; 3.00 pm: Bengal Hockey Association vs Tripura Hockey; 4.30 pm: Hockey Bihar vs Hockey Himachal.

Dhyan Chand's son appreciates government's efforts to push for Bharat Ratna for hockey legend

File image of Dhyan Chand. CNN News18

New Delhi: Olympian Ashok Kumar, son of legendary Dhyan Chand, today appreciated the Sports Ministry for requesting Bharat Ratna for his late father, the latest push to bestow the hockey legend with India's highest civilian honour.

While appreciating the present government's effort, Kumar came hard on the previous UPA regime for neglecting the matter during its tenure.

"I am hopeful that something will happen now. I appreciate the government for doing this to recognise Dhyan Chand. We are all very happy. People across the country are appreciating this," Kumar said.

"The previous government didn't handle the matter well. We are proud as a family and I am sure the entire country is proud as well," he added.

Kumar's reaction came after the Sports Minister Vijay Goel wrote to the Prime Minister's Office, requesting Bharat Ratna for the late Dhyan Chand.

"Yes, we have written to the Prime Minister about Bharat Ratna for Dhyan Chand. Conferring the honour posthumously will be a fitting tribute to his exceptional service to the country," Sports Minister Vijay Goel had said.

It is not the first time that the Ministry has sought Bharat Ratna for Dhyan Chand, who helped India win three gold medals at the Olympics (1928, 1932, and 1936).

During the UPA rule in 2013, the Sports Ministry had chosen the hockey wizard for the honour over cricketing great Sachin Tendulkar.

However in the same year, it was eventually announced that Tendulkar will be the first sportsperson to receive the award, hours after he ended his illustrious international career.

Obituary: Roger Self OBE

Great Britain's men's gold medalists in Seoul 1988

It is with great sadness that England and Great Britain Hockey learned of the death of Roger Self, who died this week aged 77.

Roger will always be remembered as the legendary mastermind behind the GB men’s team when they won gold at the 1988 Seoul Olympics [squad photographed above], and also he made hugely significant contributions to hockey on many other fronts.

Roger initially managed the Welsh squad in the 1970s to great success before moving on to managing Southgate HC to wins at three European Clubs Championships in the late 1970s. He was the GB Manager between 1978 and 1988 and was in charge when GB boycotted the Moscow Olympics in 1980, but then went on to win the Bronze medal at the Los Angeles Olympics when GB were invited to participate following Russia’s boycott, and went two steps better when they beat Germany 4-1 to take the Gold in 1988.

The men's hockey team's gold medal was one of only five golds that Great Britain won at the 88 games, and the nation's first hockey gold in 68 years, further highlighting the significance of the achievement.

Roger was also a respected FIH Tournament Director officiating at a number of tournaments including Champions Trophies.

In 2004, he was elected GB President and was instrumental in developing the Framework Agreement between the Home Countries which gave clarity to GB Performance and Business matters and ensured openness and transparency in the selection of GB athletes.

England and Great Britain Hockey would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Roger's family, friends and teammates.

A full obituary can be found on The Hockey Museum website http://hockeymuseum.net/index.php/newsitems/news-2017, and funeral details of the funeral will be posted on The Hockey Museum website when available.
