U.S. Women's National Indoor Team Shows Continued Growth on Day Two of International Rohrmax Cup

VIENNA, Austria - January 7, 2017 - As day two of the International Rohrmax Cup concluded, the U.S. Women's National Indoor Team came out of competition with mixed fortunes. Tough fought matches against seasoned European teams saw USA Blue drop both matches as USA Red won and tied today's contests. Continued growth was displayed today as both teams head into tomorrow's final games.

In the first game of the day, USA Blue rued a number of missed chances as they lost 4-3 to Austria's U-21 Team. USA's most dangerous forward, Corinne Zanolli (WC Eagles, Newtown Square, Pa.), opened the scoring after finishing a penetrating run with a hard shot inside the far post. After Austria equalized from open play, Zanolli drew two defenders and found Mary Beth Barham (Yale, Fairfax, Va.) open in the circle who made no mistake with her one-time shot to put Team USA back in the lead. While USA could not finish numerous well created chances, Austria took their opportunities, scoring three unanswered goals. USA's goalkeeper Sidonie Laplante (WC Eagles, Middletown, Pa.) denied another Austria chance as she saved a penalty stroke to keep the game within reach. With three minutes remaining, Barham finished off a beautiful passing move to bring the game back to 4-3 and finishing strong USA piled the pressure on the Austrian goal until the final whistle.

USA Red upset the host team, SV Arminen, 3-2, in the second game. Meredith Sholder (Firestyx, Alburtis, Pa.) scored after good work by Claire Webb (Syracuse, Exton, Pa.) in the corner and Paityn Wirth (Nook Hockey, Thompsontown, Pa.) finished off a five pass move to give USA Red a two goal advantage. SV Arminen converted a penalty corner but USA's goalkeeper Emma Plumb (Darmouth, Sag Harbor, N.Y.) played well in goal and Sarah Johnson (WC Eagles, Lincoln University, Pa.) controlled the midfield. USA Red soon took the lead back to two when Sholder found Riley Donnelly (FSC, Doylestown, Pa.) open in the circle and she made no mistake with a hard shot into the roof of the net. With time expired World Indoor Player of the Year, Asia Wieloch, scored off a penalty corner but USA Red had secured a well deserved 3-2 victory.

USA Red were soon back in action against Swiss champions, Rot-Weiss Wettingen. The thrilling end-to-end game finished with the honors shared at 4-4. Donnelly converted two penalty corners, and completed her hat-trick from open play, and Sholder also scored. USA goalkeeper Plumb had another solid game in goal and brought off two outstanding saves after time had expired to give the USA Red a well earned point.

The final game of the day between USA Blue and SV Arminen did not disappoint the large vocal crowd. SV Arminen's Polish star, Wielock, put on a clinic with her deft touches and pinpoint passing but the USA side showed that they were learning a lot from playing seasoned European opposition with a solid defensive display. USA Blue drew the first goal when Zanolli picked up a long ball in the corner, wrong footed the defender and threaded the ball to Sholder who scored with a one-time shot. Wielock showed her quality, carving herself an opportunity which Sam Carlino (UMass, Kennett Square, Pa.) saved, but gave the USA goalkeeper no chance as she pounced on the rebound to level the score.

With 2.5 minutes to go SV Arminen called a time out, substituting their goalkeeper to finish the match with six field players. With the clock winding down, Zanolli picked up a long pass off the boards and headed into the circle at speed behind the SV Arminen defense. She was tackled from behind but was adjudged to have shielded the ball and received a yellow card. As time ran out the home side forced a penalty corner and Wielock found the bottom left corner to give SV Arminen a 2-1 win with the final play of the game.

In the today's other games, Rot-Weiss Wettingen beat Switzerland U-21 Team 5-1 and Austria U-21 Team defeated Switzerland U-21 Team 3-1.

The final day of the International Rohrmax Cup will play out tomorrow. USA Red will play Austria's U-21 Team at 9:30 a.m. local time and Switzerland's U-21 Team at 3:30 p.m. local time. USA Blue faces off with Switzerland's U-21 Team at 10:30 a.m. local time and Rot-Weiss Wettingen at 1:30 p.m. local time.

An elated Sliders Team Manager Ann Onyango said she was glad her charges had won their opening match and was hopeful they will build on that conquest. ‘’It is a positive start and I urge my players to build on that as we move forward in competition. We are taking one match at a time but as it is champions Telkom Orange remain our strongest challengers, ‘’ Onyango said.

Gilly Okumu opened the score for Sliders in the ninth minute to give her side an early lead. The goal awoke Wananchi’s defence who remained vigilant thwarting Sliders efforts of getting a second goal. Elizabeth obong’o finally send the ball home to give Sliders a 2-0 lead in the 23rd minute. Telkom Orange begin their Africa Cup for Club Championships title defence against El-Raufai Babes of Nigeria today at City Park Stadium.

The Kenyan girls will be out to conquer the West Africans in the opening pool A match.

This is the first time the eight-time continental champions Orange will be meeting the Nigerians.

Coach Jos Openda told Feverpitch they will take a cautious approach as they seek a good start.

“We have to be cautious because we are meeting them for the first time and we are not really sure of what to expect from them because we don’t know their system of play. However, we are not worried because they also don’t know our style of play,” Openda said.

Team captain Tracy Karanja who took over from Betsy Ommalla both at the club and national level will also be out to ensure that she leads her side to another African gong. Karanja will be seeking to maintain the legacy set by Ommalla who has led Orange to four titles in a row from 2012 to 2015 in her reign as skipper.

Karanja said that they are targeting a victory in their event opener. “We are determined to retain our title and the best way to make it happen is to start on a positive note with a victory in our opening match. This is a tricky tie because we don’t know our opponents well. Nonetheless, we have our game plan of listening and following the coach’s instructions and we will surely achieve our goal,” Karanja said

Orange will rely on the services of prolific striker Jackline Mwangi, fast rising Sinyolo Girls alumnus Maureen Okumu, Audrey Omaido, Lilian Aura and Karanja. Veteran Terry Juma, Flavian Mutiva and Lucy Wangechi will be guard the backline while Cynthia Anyango will be in goal for the champions.

In the opening match of the day former holders Heartland of Nigeria open their account against Tanzania women in group B. Last year’s silver medalists Ghana Police women will be out to arrest Wananchi of Uganda in another women’s group B match.

The West Africans who came close to winning the coveted trophy, but let it slip after losing 3-2 to Orange in a penalty shootout in the final will be seeking to win their maiden and also a first for Ghana. In pool A home girls Sliders tackle Egyptian girls Sharkia in the second match

In the men’s contest Weatherhead men of Uganda face an acid test in the hands of reigning champions Eastern Company of Egypt. The East African’s will be seeking to snatch the trophy from their North Africans who have made it their property by winning 25 out of 26 times it has been played. Only Kenya’s defunct Armed Forces dented Egyptians reign by winning the trophy in 1998.

Surbiton and East Grinstead secure Wembley places

Surbiton and East Grinstead both booked their places in the Super 6s Indoor Championship finals at Wembley with two strong performances at Nottingham University Sports Centre on Saturday.

The two sides remain unbeaten and are now guaranteed to finish in the top four and appear in the semi finals at the SSE Arena in three weeks.

Surbiton are top of the table on goal difference following an 11-3 win over Canterbury, as well as a thrilling 4-4 draw with rivals East Grinstead, who won their other Saturday match against Bowdon 8-3.

The goals continue to come from throughout the team for Surbiton, with Alan Forsyth scoring four times, and William Marshall and David Goodfield three times throughout the day.

But East Grinstead looked to have the upper hand in their head-to-head, galloping into a 3-0 lead before Surbiton hit back to level with three goals in four minutes.

Surbiton took the lead through Forsyth, but it lasted less than a minute with East Grinstead ensuring a draw.

Earlier in the day, six goals from Ben Allberry helped East Grinstead beat Bowdon.

Wimbledon held on to third spot in the table despite losing 7-2 to Reading and scraping a 3-2 victory over Loughborough.

That win – plus a 6-6 draw with Canterbury – was enough for Reading to climb up to fourth place, leapfrogging Sevenoaks who beat Team Bath Buccaneers 7-5 but lost 6-5 to Loughborough in the day’s opening match.

In their other match on Saturday, Team Bath Buccaneers clinched a valuable 11-4 win over Bowdon in their bid to avoid the drop.

Sally Walton scored twice to take her tournament tally to ten goals, helping Bowdon to a 4-2 win and securing their place at the SSE Arena Wembley at the end of the month with two games still to play.

Sutton Coldfield sit second in the table and look well placed to join Bowdon, despite picking up one win and one defeat in Telford on Saturday.

They kicked off the days’ action with a 5-2 win over the University of Birmingham, before falling to a 4-3 defeat against Holcombe.

Previously unbeaten Slough had stretched their run to five matches before they were defeated by Bowdon. They condemned the University of Birmingham to their second loss of the day, 6-4, helped by a Harriet Ward brace.

Holcombe won both of their games on Saturday to stay in contention to qualify for finals day, Florencia Zappulla scored a last minute winner to give them three points in a 3-2 win over Reading.

Banbridge stay top despite defeat

Pembroke player David Quinn closes in on Instonians opponent Zach McClelland

Banbridge remain top of the Irish Hockey League but only on goal difference after losing 2-1 to Three Rock Rovers in Dublin on Saturday.

With Monkstown missing the chance to go top after losing 4-3 to Cork C of I, Lisnagarvey are level on points with Banbridge with a 2-0 win over UCD.

Instonians are still without a win at the bottom after losing 3-2 to Pembroke Wanderers at Shaw's Bridge.

In the other game, Glenanne defeated Leinster rivals Railway Union 5-4.

At Grange Road, goals from Jody Hosking and Ben Walker put Three Rock into a 2-0 interval lead before Johnny McKee replied for Banbridge after the break.

However, despite their first loss of the season, Banbridge do have a game in hand over Lisnagarvey and Monkstown.

Getty on target

Garvey scored a goal in each half against UCD to join Bann on 20 points with Ryan Getty finishing off a flowing move to break the deadlock in the 29th minute.

The Hillsborough side continued to force the pace in the second half and James Lorimer completed the scoring from a 42nd minute penalty-corner.

Just two points separate four teams at the top of the table with Cork C of I's win over Monkstown moving the Munster side level with their opponents and trailing them only on goal difference.

Instonians remain at the bottom of the table after a last minute goal denied them a draw against Pembroke Wanderers.

Wanderers in front at break

Stephen Kelso gave the Belfast side the lead in the the second minute but two goals in the space of four minutes close to half-time saw the Dublin side move into a 2-1 interval lead.

Jack Ryan equalised on the half-hour mark and Ryan McDonald made it 2-1 shortly afterwards but James Corry levelled with 10 minutes left when he scored from the penalty spot.

However, after some fine saves from home goalkeeper Sam Brown, Pembroke sealed the win when David Quinn netted from close-range in the final minute.

Glenanne's win over their Leinster rivals has moved them eight points clear of Instonians, who remain five points adrift of second-bottom Railway Union, with all three struggling sides having played the same number of matches.

Maybank exact revenge on UniKL and seal a spot in the semi-finals

by Aftar Singh

Going all out: Maybank’s Jeremy Edwards (centre) in action against UniKL’s Muhd Marhan Mohd Jalil (left) during their Tan Sri P. Alagendra Knockout Trophy quarter-final at Tun Razak Stadium yesterday.

The Tigers not only exacted sweet revenge over Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) by coming back from a goal down to win 2-1 at the Tun Razak Stadium yesterday, they also sealed their place in the semi-finals.

Maybank, powered by six foreign players, went on the offensive but it was UniKL, who took the lead through Muhd Marhan Mohd Jalil in the 32nd minute off a field goal.

But the Tigers, who lost 1-0 to UniKL in the first round last year, fought back to score two goals in seven minutes.

Muhd Iderus Ali equalised in the 44th minute before Hafifhafiz Hanafi netted the winning goal off a penalty stroke seven minutes later.

The Tigers are now odds-on favourites to reach the final as they will face minnows and Division One outfit Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) in the last four at the same venue tomorrow.

MBPJ edged Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) 2-1 in the other quarter-finals at the Kuala Lumpur Hockey Stadium.

Mohd Norshahrezan Mat Jusoh (28th minute) and Muhd Najmr Ahmad Hayazi (52nd) scored for MBPJ while Faiq Razin Zariq Idris scored for BJSS through a penalty corner in the 29th minute.

Maybank coach Saiful Azli Abdul Rahman believes this could be the year they end their title drought.

The Tigers last won a title in the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) 22 years ago in 1995.

“We were lucky to beat UniKL as we didn’t play well.

“Playing two matches in 24 hours affected my team’s performance,” admitted Saiful.

“We also failed to convert the seven penalty corners we earned in the match. This is one weakness we need to work on. Making the semis will boost the players’ confidence.”

UniKL coach A. Arulselvaraj feels that his men should have killed off the match after scoring the first goal.

“We paid the price for missing seven penalty corners in the match,” said Arulselvaraj.

The other semi-final will pit double champions Terengganu against Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club (KLHC).

Terengganu hammered Politeknik-KPT 7-1 while KLHC trounced Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) 7-0.

India need to carry on with care

Pinder Singh Sagoo

Post Rio disappointment, Indian hockey marched ahead with wins in Dhaka, Kuantan and Singapore and finally capped it with Junior World Cup crown in Lucknow. Need of the hour now is to tread a cautious path so that the fruits of success blossom into a more meaningful feats this year.

The Indian men's Junior team, delivered the world cup after 15 years, reminiscent of Hobart 2001, where the likes of Jugraj Singh, Gagan Ajit, Prabhjot Singh, Deepak Thankur dazzled.

This hasn't been an easy journey for the team as the team have only been together for about 2/3 years, having the task of winning the world cup on home soil.

Head coach Harendra Singh, who with his support team have brought together a group of players and turned them into a very strong unit on and off the field, lead by captain Harjeet Singh, building a strong team spirit on and off the field key to any successful team.

The team, amongst the fittest in world hockey, proved that with each game, they are to able match the European and Australian teams, and having played to a structured plan set out coach Harendra Singh and Roelant Oltmans, from the onset the the mantra by Harendra was 'Simple Hockey', this formula was the key to the teams success.

The team played with belief and control, working for each desire to win and they did not show the usual 'weakness' with Indian teams by not panicking after conceding an early goal, which normally will set off the alarm bells in the team. I am not saying it was a perfect performance, there where mistakes like poor short corner conversions, the forwards coming up with goals and yes, missing chances.

What Next? The junior's have set a mark by winning the world cup, they have surely given the head coach of the senior squad food for thought and players in the senior squad cannot think that they can or have the right to be selected without looking over their shoulder without fearing for their positions in the squad. A few players have played in the senior squad, and have given a good account of themselves i.e Harmanpreet.

India needs to look at integrating members of this squad into the senior squad, as other teams will do this, to develop the teams with an eye on the 2018 World Cup and 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. The hope is that these players are given the chance to prove themselves, selection has to be on merit for the team to be a success.

To rate the players would be unfair, as each player give their all in each game, when someone didn't perform there was always someone who stepped up to deliver a performance, even if they didn't get adjudged man of the match, this was about the team winning.

Final note, on our out to Raipur last year for the world league final's, Harendra Singh was on the same flight, and he 'promised that this team will be on the podium to lift the world cup' 'that is a promise', promise kept!.

INDIAN HOCKEY'S WINNING STREAK POST RIO
