Ireland Wrap Up 6 Nations Tournament And Look To Dutch Series

Clear-cut chances were few and far between in the opening half for Ireland and any suggestion of an opportunity for Germany was quickly shut out by Jamie Carr in the Irish goal. At times Germany seemed to find it too easy to break into the Irish circle with Carr facing a 1 vs 1 situation more than once; but the half was mirrored with composed Irish defense that began to frustrate Germany.  Ireland’s best chance came courtesy of a Mikie Watt run who slipped the ball to the overlapping John Jermyn; the shot was saved but it suggested a pacey counter attack might be the way through the structured German defensive line. Sure enough two more chances followed in the final 5 minutes of the half; Alan Sothern using 3D skills to bulldoze his way into the circle and Watt charging along the baseline.

The current Olympic champions broke the deadlock thanks to Moritz Furste who scored from Germany’s fifth penalty corner of the match. Ireland began to create more concrete chances and Pembroke teammates Sothern and Kirk Shimmins linked up nicely down the right side, with Shimmins drawing a high save. A diving Sothern very nearly got on the end of a ball across the circle while moments later Eugene Magee saw his shot sail over the bar. However the Germans doubled their lead in the 55th minute when a wayward ball across the circle found it’s way to Timm Herzbruch who duly fired home.

Reflecting on the 6 Nations Tournament Coach Craig Fulton said “ We performed consistently well in Valencia and made some positive improvements against higher ranked opposition who we’ll play in Rio. We’re looking forward to playing the Dutch in Cork this coming week; it’ll be a great occasion”.

The Green Machine are back in action tomorrow in the Fexco Match Series against the Netherlands in UCC, Cork. Match begins at 7pm and tickets are available at the gate.

Black Sticks dominate Argentina to win bronze

The Black Sticks Men have won the bronze medal at the Six Nations in Valencia following a 4-1 rout over Argentina.

New Zealand were in a dominant mood against the world’s seventh ranked side, leading from start to finish and holding all the possession.

The Black Sticks scored a goal in each quarter through Shay Neal, Nick Wilson, Simon Child and Stephen Jenness to race out to a four goal buffer before a late Argentina consolation strike.

From five games at the tournament the Kiwis finished with two wins, two losses and a draw with this morning’s result sealing a third place finish.

Head coach Colin Batch said it was pleasing to finish strongly with their best performance at the tournament.

“It was a very good effort from us today, we controlled the game well and scored some impressive field goals,” he said.

“We went into the game looking to finish well at the tournament and we certainly did that, it’s significant that we played our best match at the end.

“It was a big step up for us and we walk away with the bronze medal which is a good reward for a good performance against one of the top teams who will be at Rio.”

The Black Sticks opened the scored just before quarter time following a brilliant solo effort from Neal who pivoted and changed angle twice before firing into goal from long range.

New Zealand doubled the lead in the 28th minute after a length of the field counter attack saw Neal pass to Wilson on the post to knock past the goalkeeper.

Captain Child scored his side’s third goal of the match early in the third quarter with a deft touch on a hard cross across the circle.

The Kiwis grabbed their fourth in emphatic fashion in the 57th minute with Jenness picking up a loose ball and smashing home on his forehand.

Argentina scored a consolation goal just before fulltime with Gonzalo Peillat converting from a penalty corner.

The Black Sticks now travel home to New Zealand for their final preparations ahead of the Rio Olympic Games next month.

The world no 8 Kiwi side - ranked one spot below the South Americans - dominated the clash with a goal in each quarter through Shay Neal, Nick Wilson, Simon Child and Stephen Jenness.

Argentina hit back with a late consolation strike, but barely had a chance to grasp possession against the strong New Zealand side.

A fantastic breakaway goal doubled the Black Sticks’ advantage, as they went on to beat Argentina 4-1.

Out of five games, the Black Sticks had two wins, two losses and a draw, sealing a third place on Monday morning (NZ time).

Head coach Colin Batch was happy with the strong finish, one month out from the Rio Olympics.

"It was a very good effort from us today, we controlled the game well and scored some impressive field goals," he said.

Neal fired the first goal from long range just before quarter time, before lining up Wilson's goal in the 28th minute.

Captain Child scored from across the circle early in the third quarter, before Jenness picked up a loose ball in the 57th minute to score number four.

Just before fulltime, Argentina's Gonzalo Peillat converted a penalty corner.

The Black Sticks now head home to New Zealand to put the finishing touches on their Olympic preparations.

India stood fifth in Valencia

By B.G.Joshi

India  got a Bronze medal in the Hockey World League (Raipur ,Dec 2015) and a Silver medal in the Champions Trophy (London, June 2016) to boost the  Indian chances of podium finishing in Rio Olympics (Aug 2016). But there was a  poor performance in the 6-nations tourney in Valencia (Jun-Jul 2016) which muffed all hopes.

To concede soft goals by defence and inability of forwards to make penalty corners makes the games tough for India. Moreover rhythm and form of play maker Captain Sardar Singh is in jeopardy.

Looking to these India will not be in position to grab the opportunity of knockout quarterfinals introduced in two pool format first time in Olympics.

India lost to mighty Germany 0-4, whereas 15 days ago they gave tough fight leading 3-1(ultimately 3-3), drew with Argentina (3-3) and Spain (1-1) and lost to Kiwis (0-1); these are disappointing performances. India have to select those 16 who have caliber and game sense.

India draw with Spain in final game of the 6 Nations tournament

Valencia: India played out a 1-1 draw with Spain in their final match of the 6 Nations invitational tournament.

India started off on the front foot, very early in the game and had a PC as early as the 5th minute, which was saved by Quico Cortes in Spain’s goal. The action shifted ends very quickly though. From the counterattack, Spain earned a PC which brought out a sharp save from Sreejesh. The see-saw nature of the match went on, India in the ascendancy, won another PC, saved again by Cortes who was also at hand to put away Talwinder’s attempt from the rebound.

From there though, Spain started exerting a bit of control over the game and soon made the pressure count. A PC was saved on the line by Sreejesh before an infringement off a defender, earned Spain a stroke. Pau Quemada scored to give Spain the lead as they went into the break.

India came out much the same in the second quarter, constantly probing, pushing and earning PCs, but Cortes was always up to the task, deflecting it away with sharp saves. In the 18th minute though, Raghunath finally made one count, breaking through to draw the teams level. With a minute of the first half left, India had another glorious chance, from a PC, Cortes again pulling off a double, save first from the dag flick and then from the rebound to ensure the two teams went into half time with the scores even at 1-1.

In the second half, India started taking more control of the ball, and exerting pressure on the Spanish flanks, as they sat deep looking to pounce on the counter. Much of it though was thwarted away by Spain. In the final quarter, India pushed high up the pitch and wave upon wave of attacks went into the Spanish circle, as they struggled to defend and keep the honours even. With seconds to play, India would come closest to getting the lead, but the effort hit the crossbar and fell safely to leave the two teams with an equal share of the points.

Fresh faced Women's Hockey team to vie for Rio Gold

Holly MacNeil

The women’s hockey section of the 2016 Australian Olympic Team is hoping the fresh talent of 12 debutants will be the key to securing Olympic gold in Rio.

With only four returning Olympians, the side will largely rely on Olympic rookies to bring enthusiasm and excitement to the pitch as the team looks to claim top spot on the medal dais.

With over 350 international appearances, Australia’s most capped female hockey player, Madonna Blyth will lead the Team in her third Olympic campaign.

The Rio Games will be the 30-year-old’s second experience at captaining the side and she feels she has a lot of more experience under her belt this time around.

“It’s obviously a privilege and special every time that I lead the girls out onto the pitch, but at an Olympic Games it’s even more so,” Blyth said.

Blyth says she’s well aware of the amount of fresh faces on the 2016 hockey Team and that it is important for them to make the most of the occasion and not let it overwhelm them.

“A lot of different things happen around the Olympics so it’s important not to let the pressure get to them and to enjoy the overall experience.

“It’s great to have more experienced members of the team there who know what to expect, who can help prepare the girls for Rio.”

Joining Blyth in her third Games campaign will be Casey Sablowski, who was the youngest player at the Beijing 2008 Games. The pair will be supported by London 2012 Olympians Emily Smith and Jodie Kenny who will line up for their second Olympics in Rio.

Brooke Peris, Edwina Bone, Gabrielle Nance, Georgina Parker, Georgina Morgan, Grace Stewart, Jane-Anne Claxton, Karri McMahon, Kathryn Slattery, Kirstin Dwyer, Mariah Williams and Rachael Lynch will all make their Olympic debut.

Despite Rio being her first Olympic appearance, for goalkeeper Rachael Lynch this selection has been years in the making after she missed selection on the London 2012 Team.

“It’s been my dream to go to the Olympics for such a long time, and after ten years of hard work and the disappointment of missing out the last time it was such a relief to see that I had made the team,” Lynch said.

Lynch said Australia’s overall success at the Olympics has inspired her to keep pushing for her own chance to call herself an Olympian.

“Not just past Hockeyroos and Kookaburras teams, but other sports like water polo, the montage scenes of teams winning at the Olympics; that’s the feeling I’ve been chasing.”

Joining Lynch on the debutant roster is 19-year-old Grace Stewart who will be Australia’s youngest hockey player at the Games.

Seeing her name on the selection list was a surreal moment for Stewart.

“I was in shock and I had to double check it was my name and when it was, it was pretty amazing,” said Stewart who is both nervous and excited to make her Olympic debut.

“We have a big three weeks of training ahead, and it will be pretty full on but it will be worth it knowing it will help us go better over there.”

For head coach Adam Commens picking the 2016 Olympic Team was the toughest the selection panel has seen in recent Olympic history.

"In the end we have selected a fantastic group of players that are all in fantastic form,” Commens said.

“To win Olympic medals it's important to have in form players that are also on the improve. We have this throughout our Olympic selection of 16 and I'm excited by our prospects in Rio."

Australia's women head into the first South American Games as world number 3, and will compete in Pool B against Argentina (#2), Great Britain (6), USA (7), Japan (10) and India (13).

Competition starts on August 6 and will feature a new format. The top four from each of the two pools will progress to the all-or-nothing quarter-finals as each team pushes towards the gold medal match on August 18.

These 16 athletes take the overall 2016 Australian Olympic Team to 272 from 22 sports, with an expected final Team of around 410 athletes.

The Australian women's Olympic hockey team:

Brooke Peris (Darwin, NT) 1st Games
Casey Sablowski (Albion Park, NSW) 3rd Games
Edwina Bone (Orange, NSW*) 1st Games
Emily Smith (Crookwell, NSW) 2nd Games
Gabrielle Nance (Kingscliff, SA) 1st Games
Georgie Parker (Berri, SA) 1st Games
Georgina Morgan (Armidale,NSW) 1st Games
Grace Stewart (Gerringong, NSW) 1st Games
Jane-Anne Claxton (Adelaide, SA) 1st Games
Jodie Kenny (Wamuran, QLD) 2nd Games
Karri McMahon (Berri, SA) 1st Games
Kathryn Slattery (South Stirling, WA) 1st Games
Kirstin Dwyer (Mackay, QLD) 1st Games
Madonna Blyth (Brisbane, QLD) 3rd Games
Mariah Williams (Parkes, NSW) 1st Games
Rachael Lynch (Melbourne, VIC) 1st Games

Big week ahead for Canadian men as countdown to Olympics hits one month

Shaheed Devji

This week is setting up to be a memorable one for Canada’s Men’s National Team.

With one month to go before the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, the week is action-packed and the countdown kicks off in earnest with Canada’s Olympic team nomination on Tuesday.

After Canada’s Olympic men’s field hockey team is announced Tuesday, the sixteen men set to represent Team Canada will begin their final preparations for the Games.

A training session Tuesday morning at the University of British Columbia will be quickly followed by the first of four games against the United States Wednesday in Vancouver.

The opening game of the Summer Games Sendoff Series presented by London Drugs will be played at Rutledge Field in West Vancouver at 7:00pm Wednesday.

The second game of the series will be played at Tamanawis Field in Surrey on Thursday at 7pm, with the return legs being played on Saturday and Sunday at 7pm and 6pm respectively.

To see the full Canada-USA series schedule, results, and game recaps, click here.

The competition will be the first internationally sanctioned matches Canada’s men will play in Vancouver since 2013 when they hosted Chile and Trinidad and Tobago for a three-nations tournament.

It will also be the first and only time the hockey community will have a chance to see Canada’s Olympic field hockey team in action prior to the Games in Brazil.

The games are open to the public and admission is free. There is limited seating at both venues, so friends, family, and fans are encouraged to come early.

To cap the week off, sandwiched in between the matches is the 2016 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Olympic Sendoff where a group of Olympic-theme inductees as well as the 2016 Men’s Olympic Team will be honoured.

The event is open to the public and tickets. Tickets include dinner and a portion of the proceeds goes back into Canada’s field hockey programs. Tickets can be purchased here.

Canada’s hectic pre-Olympic doesn’t end this week, as the men are headed to Vancouver Island from July 12-14 for training at Shawinigan Lake School and to host two clinics for youth of all ages in Shawnigan Lake and Victoria.

Players interested in participating should contact their local field hockey clubs for information. More information will be posted to fieldhockey.ca shortly.

England Hockey’s Secret Society

By Patrick Rowley

Did you know that England hosted the Home Countries annual Grand Masters Home Nations tournament at Southgate Hockey Club this past week-end?

What a shame you didn't, you missed a great party.

England Hockey does a fine job encouraging hockey at all levels, even for the disabled, but you are not allowed to know when the games you want to watch are taking place.

As with so many other events, Great Britain and England official and unofficial matches, at all levels are rarely if ever publicised in advance. No wonder the media give very little publicity to the game we love.

You would have thought it would be a simple matter to have a section on the front of their web site with the upcoming fixtures and results. But no, we are told, the web system they use can’t accommodate such a change. They must be wrong.

So to get back to this week-end’s splendid event at Southgate. There were a lot of former great players performing and a lot of seniors who failed to make the grade in their heyday and are making up for that by winning caps for their country in their declining years.

How many people in the UK would have liked to watch one of our great players of the 80's and '84 Olympic Bronze medalist, Mark Precious, still demonstrating much of the skills he showed the world – this time for England Over 60’s.

England men  triumphed in all three of the age levels being contested in the delightful setting of Trent Park. They won all their games at Over 60, over 65, over 70..

Ireland competed for the first time in the Over 65’s. They had never played as a team before arriving in North London against anyone yet were unlucky to be pipped for third place by Wales on goal difference.  England had to work hard to beat their over 60’s side 3-1 in their final game.

Ireland’s Over 65 player/manager was John Fleming whose father played in Ireland’s all conquering side when international hockey resumed after the 39-45 War.

The stars of the show at Southgate were some outstanding goalkeepers.

And England Over 60’s women, so ably and enthusiastically managed by John Oliver, were also invited. They played some beautiful hockey.  They were led by Jean Scott-Miller, a former England B international who did a Kate Walsh. She took a nasty blow to an eye but was back playing the next day. Perhaps the ladies’ star was Miranda McTaggart. She certainly dazzled.

Our thanks go to all those who gave up their time to make sure the event ran smoothly. Steve Floyd of England Hockey and young “Tony” Barber made sure of that while Liz Moss worked miracles on behalf of Southgate Hockey Club.

Butali Warriors cage KU Vultures in season opener

Dream start for newcomers, Okwemba nets a brace as the Warriors begin campaign on a winning note.

By BRIAN YONGA

New signings Lawrence Okubasu and  Tony Nyukuri made dream starts for Butali Sugar Warriors, scoring a goal each as the champions began their title defence with a resounding 6-1 win over Kenyatta University Vultures in a Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) men’s Premier League match on Sunday.

Veteran defender Saidi Okwemba scored twice, with internationals Zack Aura and Maxwell Fuchaka also hitting the board during the encounter at City Park Stadium in Nairobi.

Former United States International University of Africa forward Lawrence Okubasu and former Greensharks midfielder Tony Nyukuri proved their worth with impressive debuts for the lakeside club.

Warriors’ coach Cliffe Okello warned other clubs that his team is yet to hit top gear.

“This is the kind of start that we wanted and it gives us the momentum for another title campaign,” Okello told Daily Nation Sport on Sunday.

Okubasu was on target after five minute s as he beat the Vultures’ napping defence and goalkeeper Dennis Nyongesa with a brilliant field goal.

Vultures held out until the 17th minute when Okwemba converted a penalty corner in the 17th minute to give his side a 2-0 lead. Five minutes later Okwemba completed his  brace after finishing off another penalty corner.

THE STUDENTS IMPROVED

The Vultures’ defence crumbled as Fuchaka scored  at the half hour mark to give Warriors a 4-0 lead at the halftime buzzer. Vultures missed the services of talismanic striker Shadrack Ruto, who joined Kenya College of Accountancy University.

The students improved after the restart and Moses Omamo pulled one back after eight minutes. Buoyed by the goal, Vultures surged forward in search of more goals and were punished for leaving their goal area exposed as Aura and Nyukuri scored for the champions to seal the three points.

“I think we were too naive and showed our opponents too much respect. We need to be more clinical in front of goal this season," Vultures coach Walter Onyango said.

In another men’s  Premier League clash, debutantes Chase Sailors came back from two goals down to salvage a point in their 2-2 draw with Kenya College of Accountancy University.

In the women’s National League, Sliders thrashed Daystar Falcons 10-0 with sisters Anita Agunda and Dorsilla Agunda scoring three goals each.

Pakistan Hockey League: PHF allegedly faked procurement process

By Nabil Tahir

KARACHI: A petition has been filed against the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) with the Islamabad High Court by a private company who has raised questions regarding the procurement process of the first-ever Pakistan Hockey League (PHL), a PHF official has revealed.

As per the court papers, the federation has been accused of pre-planning the awarding of the inaugural league’s procurement rights to a company led by a Lahore-based local investor, who also owns a franchise in the Pakistan Super League.

It further alleges that the staging of the tendering process was effectively a sham to conceal PHF’s dirty work.

Meanwhile, PHF President Brigadier (retd) Khalid Sajjad Khokhar has claimed that there was no real interest in tendering for the PHL and that the federation only received one bid, following which it was decided to discard the process.

“This is our first ever league and we don’t want any hurdles in its way. This petition is nothing but a ploy against the federation to delay the league,” said Khokhar.

“The league would be held as per schedule because there is nothing serious in the petition filed with the IHC. We will answer it with facts and reasoning.”

He also said that the recently concluded 5-a-side hockey tournament was a success and with the PHL, the federation will take the next giant leap towards its long-term target of reviving the national sport.

100% of surveyed coaches: “video-based learning is effective in sport”

Video analysis enables crucial coaching approaches to team success.

Edinburgh, UK – A recent survey conducted by Coach Logic, leading video feedback platform providers, has uncovered the indispensable value video-based learning holds for coaches and their teams.  In a survey of 62 coaches of mixed sports including rugby, field hockey and football, a compelling 100% thought video based learning was an effective tool in sport.

87% of surveyed coaches were currently using video-based learning, the remaining 13% had plans to use it.  An overwhelming 94% thought video-based learning had improved players’ decision-making on the field with 30% of coaches saying most players don’t understand feedback when not using video analysis.

More sophisticated online video analysis and feedback platforms enable collaborative learning and peer-to-peer coaching.  When asked what the main outcome of peer-to-peer coaching was, 38% of surveyed coaches felt it improved learning, 39% felt it led to better team culture, 20% thought it motivated players and 2% thought it actually led to worse team culture.  When it comes to a collaborative approach to improvement and learning, a staggering 95% of coaches felt it was either important or crucial to team success.

“This survey highlights the crucial role video analysis and feedback technology has in modern day sports at all levels," explains Andy Muir, CEO and Co-Founder of Coach Logic.  He continues, "Unfettered communication, constructive feedback and collaborative learning between coaches and their players as well as between the players themselves are key factors in team success.  The value coaches place on video based learning enabling these key drivers is clearly evident from this survey and it highlights the importance of this tool for sports teams wanting to achieve that extra competitive edge."

All chairmen stay on for another year in MHC

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) will retain all the chairmen of the various sub-committees for another year.

The executive board were supposed to look at the KPI (key performance indicator) of the committees and word had it that changes were expected at the meeting on Friday.

Instead, MHC president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said “all of them have been asked to stay on for another year”.

“We discussed at length and unanimously agreed to retain the same people as chairmen.

“We’re also happy that deputy president George Koshy has agreed to stay on as competitions chairman,” said Subahan.

The executive board also set Aug 13 as the date for the delayed annual general meeting (AGM) after getting permission from the Sports Commissioner’s office.

“Only the venue is still undecided. At the AGM, we will go through the reports of the various committees,” he said.

MHC: States must pay sanction fee to host events

by S. Ramaguru

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) have decided to set US$10,000 (senior; RM39,900) and US$5,000 (juniors; RM19,950) as sanction fee for international tournaments to be hosted by state affiliates.

The decision was taken by the MHC executive board after their meeting at the Places of the Golden Horses Hotel recently.

MHC president Datul Seri Subahan Kamal said that the ruling would come in to effect immediately.

That means the organisers of the Sultan of Johor Cup will have to fork out US$5,000 to host the annual tournament in Johor Baru from Oct 21-Nov 6.

“It’s a small sum which the board feels should be levied on the affiliates concerned. The finance committee looked at the various options and decided on the present rate.

“All affiliates wishing to host a tournament will have to pay the amount,” he said.

The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup organisers will have to pay US$10,000 to host the tournament next year.

Subahan said that the MHC had to pay the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) US$20,000 (RM79,800) in sanction fees to host the Asian Champions Trophy in Kuantan from Oct 20-30.

The Johor Hockey Association (JHA) are unhappy with the decision taken by the executive council.

JHA deputy president Manjit Majid Singh said that they did not expect the MHC to set such a high sum (US$5,000).

“We thought that it would be a nominal fee,” he said.

“The MHC should be grateful that we have been hosting this junior meet, which provides a top-class fare for the youngsters.

“This is not for us ... but for Malaysia.

“The tournament also provides a pathway for budding umpires in the region.

“We organise courses and seminar at our own cost. I don’t understand the rational behind the sanction fee.”
