Hockey5s lifts off with a bang
YOG celebrates Hockey5s world level debut with 84 goals
A day after the stunning opening ceremony to the Youth Olympic Games, the Hockey5s event got off to a promising start with goals galore and eight action-packed encounters.
The big surprise of Day 1 was delivered by the Uruguayan girls who stunned top hockey nation Germany with a fantastic effort and well-deserved victory. Neighbouring Argentina’s Leoncitas – the little lionesses – landed a massive 22-0 win over Fiji, with eight goals by fiery Julieta Jankunas.
The remaining girls’ matches saw hosts China move past a valiantly fighting Zambian team, and Japan sailing past South Africa.
Meanwhile, the boys’ competition saw fewer goals but fiercer contests. Spain sank five quick goals in their opening third against Bangladesh before their opponents could get their feet on the ground for a solid foundation for their 9-1 win.
New Zealand wrestled down Zambia despite an outstanding performance by Richard Lungu in goal, while Canada charged to a comfortable opening win with three late goals after South Africa had kept the match open well into the final third.
Pakistan’s representatives finally concluded the day with a bumpy 6-2 win over bravely battling Mexico.

Youth Olympic Men’s hockey team win opener
The New Zealand Youth Olympic Men’s hockey team has had an 8-2 win over Zambia in their first game of the Hockey5’s in Nanjing overnight.
The Kiwis were 3-1 up after the first spell with Hayden Phillips scoring two goals and Robbie Capizzi also finding the back of the net. In the second third, David Brydon and Aidan Sarikaya took the score to 5-2, and in the final third New Zealand finished it off with Dominic Newman getting a double and Phillips scoring once more to get a hat-trick.
The new Hockey5 format has been introduced by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and is being played at the Youth Olympics (16-28 August 2014). There are nine in a team with only five players on the field, there are side boards around a reduced field size, no penalty corners, and the game is split into three periods of 15 minutes with an interval of two minutes between each period.
The NZ Men will face Mexico next at 1am on Tuesday, then Germany at 8.30pm on Wednesday and Pakistan at 11pm on Thursday. (NZT). The NZ Women face Zambia tonight at 10pm and then take on Germany, China and Uruguay. There are ten nations competing, with two pools of five nations in each.

Canadians win convincingly in Youth Olympics opener

The Canadian Men's Under-18 National Field Hockey Team got off to a quick start at the Youth Olympic Games with a convincing 5-1 victory over the Republic of South Africa Sunday in Nanjing, China.
The level of competition in the new Hockey Fives format of the game was relatively unknown to the Canadians heading into the Games and thus coming out with a victory in their first match is a great first step in the tournament.
"Not knowing what to expect from any of the teams in this new format of Hockey Fives made it challenging to prepare ahead of our first match," said Team Manager and Canadian field hockey veteran Scott Sandison. "In some ways it was easy as we could only focus on ourselves and the team delivered on what was asked of them."
It didn't start as planned for the Canadians, however, after they surrendered the first goal of the match to the South Africans in the third minute of play.
The response, though, was encouraging.
Balraj Panesar netted two goals before before tenth minute was up to give Canada a 2-0 lead after the first period. Canada's calmness and resiliency was a good sign according to their head coach.
"We discussed as a team what our goals were prior to the tournament and one of them was to play consistent hockey across an entire match," said Canadian head coach Inderpal Sehmbi. "I think we did that tonight."
The second period was scoreless before an outburst of Canadian goals in the third.
First Brandon Pereira scored in the 29th minute, followed by Amrith Sidhu and Vikram Sandhu in the thirty-first and thiry-sixth minute respectively.
The Canadians will now face Spain in their second match Monday at 7:30pm local time (4:30am PST/7:30am EST) before taking on Bangladesh on Tuesday at 7:00pm local (4:00am PST/7:00am EST).
"Our team is happy with some of the progress we have made since we centralized in Vancouver 5 weeks ago," adds Sehmbi. "We're looking forward to the next two days of matches which will be important to our team."

Pakistan beat Mexico 6-2 in Youth Olympics hockey

KARACHI: Pakistan began the hockey Youth Olympics campaign by thrashing Mexico 6-2 in their first Pool B fixture of the five-a-side event at Nanjing YOG Sports Park Hockey Field, Nanjing, China on Sunday.
Pakistan took the lead in the second minute of the first half when Muhammad Atiq scored the first goal of the match. Four minutes later, Mubashar Ali doubled the lead, while Shan Irshad added another goal in the seventh minute to strike a blow to Malaysian hopes.
The second half saw only one goal being scored in the 22nd minute by Malaysian Jacobo Montano in a desperate effort to lessen the deficit.
The third and final half saw four goals being netted. Shah Irshad struck one in the 25th minute, followed by Muhammad Yaqoob’s 29th minute effort.
Bilal Mehmood then placed the cherry on top with a 33rd minute goal, while Mexico scored the last goal of the match in the 34th.
The matches are being played on three 12-minute halves format. Each half is separated by a two-minute break. The significant change in this championship is that a player can score a goal from anywhere in the field as done in football; there is no restriction of the traditional ‘D’ area.

Ireland Put 8 Past France in Series 2
Ireland beat France 8-0 today in the 2nd of 4 three nations series taking place over a 11 day period in UCD as build up towards the Olympic Qualifier, World League 2 continues, in a match that they completely dominated.
Ireland dominated the first half of this match with such conviction that no touch was even required from Irish Keeper Ayeisha McFerran. Ireland opened their account in the 4th minute thanks to Captain Megan Frazer who had a free in & weaved through thumping home to make it 1-0. Just five minutes later Ireland doubled their lead Naomi Carroll capitalising on a Gillian Pinder pass to smash home making it 2-0.
Next on the score sheet Katie Mullan volleyed home from a bouncy pass with accuracy to make it 3-0 before two further goals added to the first half tally through drag flick set pieces, Chloe Brown and Audrey O’Flynn both making their presence felt.
Half Time: Ireland 5-0 France
Ireland started the second half with the same attacking intent Aine Connery immediately testing the French defence but it was Chloe Brown who did the honours in the 41st minute making it 6-0 after roofing a dragflick. Just four minutes later Ireland perfected a text book move Nikki Evans passing across the back line to the penalty spot for Katie Mullan to slot home making it lucky number 7 for the Irish.
Ireland put the final nail in the coffin in the 56th minute when Naomi Carroll laid off to Aine Connery who slid home full stretch to knock it home and make it 8-0 in a match that was dominated by the Green Army.
Ireland will play again tomorrow 7pm against Spain as this test series continues.

KZN sides win as B Section kicks off Women's IPT but Free State shine brightest

BOTH Durban’s KZN Mynahs and Pietermaritzburg-based KZN Inland had successful opening days in the B Section of the SA Women’s Interprovincial Hockey Tournament (IPT) at Greenfields Turf in Princess Margaret Drive, PMB Sunday.
But it was coach Braam van Wyk’s exciting young Free State team who made the biggest statement for promotion to next year’s top tier A Section with a convincing 4-1 victory over a more-than-competent Western Province Peninsula (Pens) outfit.
Committed defence saw Pens hold Free State to 0-0 at half-time but four goals in 16 minutes after the changeover set up the Bloemfontein girls’ success.
Outstanding captain Liné Malan and superb Investec South Africa-capped striker Tanya Britz scored after penalty corners in the 43rd and 45th minutes with Pens pulling one back in the 48th via a well-struck Rezanne Villet PC hit, but Free State restored their two-goal winning margin when Nicole Kruger scored a field goal and the irrepressible Britz sealed a very good win with Free State’s goal number four in the 58th minute.
In the seventh minute Malan eliminated a group of defenders in a weaving run through the right channel to signal Free State’s intent.
After Pens keeper and vice-captain Nicole la Fleur’s fine reflex save it was the Capetonians who won the first two PCs. On the quarter-hour Free State keeper Beatrix van Dyk used her height to pull off a stunning reflex save off a deflection and at the other end the skilful Britz turned her marker inside out before La Fleur came smartly off her goalline to block the shot.
With Britz creating havoc upfront it was only excellent Pens tackling that kept the scoresheet blank but Free State changed that eight minutes after the changeover (43rd) when quite appropriately, industrious skipper Malan finished off an untidy PC (1-0).
Two minutes later (45th) the Bloem lasses went 2-0 up through Britz off a PC before Villet’s set-piece strike (2-1) reeled Free State in to an extent, but in the 49th Kruger restored the two-goal winning margin (3-1) through the move of the match, one-touch passing tearing the defensive screen apart.
Fittingly, it was Britz who delivered the knockout blow 12 minutes from the end (58th) for Free State’s 4-1 triumph.
Nicole Walraven was superb for Free State in midfield, which she and Malan locked up thoroughly for the winning side, while Britz supplied the rapier upfront in the face of a determined, stubborn Pens defence.
Both keepers made several other saves in the match which prevented the goal tally in this action-packed match reaching into double figures.
Inland disposed of a very disappointing, uncertain SA Country Districts A side 7-1 after leading 3-1 at half-time while Mynahs were way better than East Gauteng yet laboured to a 2-0 win after leading 1-0 at the changeover.
Vicky Jonker’s brace of field goals in the fourth and seventh minutes set the tone for KZN Inland and while Linnaea Vlok pulled one back for SACD via a PC in the 11th the writing was already on the wall.
Two minutes from half-time (33rd) Silindile Mbhele made it 3-1 from field play and after the turnaround Tiffany Jones (48th), Mbhele again (50th) and a brace from Michelle Dias in the 57th (penalty corner) and 62nd completed the rout.
“It was a good start, the girls gelled well, especially in the second half,” said Inland coach Devon van der Merwe. “It was an all-round consistent performance and the challenge is to maintain that throughout the week.”
When Inland started moving the ball more efficiently and at pace it freed up their defenders to attack and it will be interesting to see what tactics Zimbabwe come up with to counter that danger in Tuesday’s 12 noon clash. Zimbabwe looked good in their 8-0 win over SA Country Districts B in Sunday’s early match.
KZN Mynahs made life hard for themselves against a plucky East Gauteng (EG) by persisting in attacking through the middle rather than out wide, but dominated sufficiently to get three log points in the bag with well-taken field goals from Carla van Niekerk in the 28th minute for 1-0 at half-time before Danni Robbert made the game safe at 2-0 from field play in the 65th.
Outstanding for EG was goalkeeper Darné Van Ballagooyen who demonstrated how an in-form shot-stopper can keep her side in the game when the momentum of the match is going the opposition’s way.
The spirited Gautengers defended with heart and soul, one penalty corner being cleared off the goalline, while a number of other shots during the 70 minutes found Van Ballagooyen in the way through good positional play and impressive reflex saves.
Mynahs did not help themselves with some mediocre finishing but one particular move – the ball beginning with right half Amy Visagie and transferred smartly through four players down the right flank - indicated what they should have been doing all along against an enthusiastic but relatively limited opponent.
The few times she received passes, Visagie was clearly a threat as far as launching attacks was concerned, but seldom used- much to her side’s detriment.
Zimbabwe led SACD B 5-0 at half-time to set the platform - and their goals in the match came from Jessica Hilton-Barber (3), Nicky Watson, Michelle Williams, Iman Johnson, Fariyah Omarshah and Chelse Louw.

RAMADHAN Rosli scored four goals as Razak Cup Division One silver medallists Kuala Lumpur got off to a roaring start by beating Penang 5-2 at the Kuantan Stadium yesterday.
Ramadhan hit the target in the seventh, 17th, 21st, and 68th minutes while KL’s other goal was scored by Syafiq Sumantri.
Mohamed Azrul (eighth) and Jamil Johari (56th) scored for Penang.
Razak Cup Tournament Director Daljit Singh said Kedah player A. Rajan will be suspended for one match after he verbally abused umpire Puvalagan.
“After the Kedah-Kelantan match (which ended in a 1-1 draw on Saturday), Kedah reserve goalkeeper Rajan verbally abused the umpire and will serve a one-match suspension,” said Daljit, who is also the Kuala Lumpur HA treasurer.

KL get off to big win in RAzak Cup
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Razak Cup champions Kuala Lumpur got off to a 5-2 win over Penang in their opening Division One match in Group B at the Kuantan Hockey Stadium on Sunday.
KL, the 19-time champions, have their national star Mohamed Ramadan Rosli to thank for. Ramadan, who recently played in the World Cup, scored four of the five goals.
He opened accounts in the seventh minute and added another 10 minutes later. His other two goals came in the 21st and 68th minutes.
Another youngster Nor Syafiq Sumantri, a member of the project 2016 team, scored the other goal in the 50th minute.
Penang scored a goal in each half through Mohamed Azrul (eighth) and Jamil Johari Ghazali (56th).
KL coach K. Embaraj said they wanted a winning start to give the players a confidence boost ahead of the other matches.
“Opening matches are always tricky. It is good to have started of well and the goals were well taken. Now we have to keep up the momentum and ensure we don’t falter when it matters.”
KL qualified for the final last year but were beaten 1-3 by Perak.
In another Group B match, former champions Malacca also got off to a winning start when they beat Johor 6-2.
Malacca were champions in 2005 and 2009 while Johor have won the Razak Cup three times.
Manraj Singh and Amirullah Zainol scored a brace for Malacca. Manraj was on target in the 17th and 34th minutes while Amirullah scored in the 25th and 45th minutes.
Dedy Ariyadi Jumaidi started the scoring in the third minute. Azrul Effendy Bistamann was the other scorer in the 37th minute.
Johor scored through Mohamed Syafiq Zain and Mohamed Azami Adabi in the 44th and 59th minutes respectively.

Malaysia hockey kids storm into Asian schools semis

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia qualified in style for the semi-finals of the Asian Schools Under-18 hockey championships after a 7-0 win over Macau at the Sultan Azlan Shah Stadium in Ipoh on Sunday.
They topped the three-team Group A with six points. On Saturday, the Malaysians, who are the defending champions, chalked up a 15-0 win over Indonesia.
Mohamed Zulhamizan and Nik Mohamed Aiman scored a brace for the hosts. Zulhamizan was on target in the ninth and 23rd minutes while Aiman scored in the 34th and 37th minutes.
Mohamed Lukman Hakim (17th), Mohamed Najeme (28th) and Mawardi Hamirin (59th) were the other scorers.
In Group B, Sri Lanka kept their hopes alive for a last-four spot with a 5-0 win over Hong Kong.
The Sri Lankans lost 1-0 to Singapore on Saturday.
Sri Lanka had trouble getting their game going as they were kept at bay and restricted to just one goal through Rasanga Malith in the 10th minute.
They found their rhythm after the break and scored four more goals.
Mohamed Ifras Mansoor scored twice with field attempts in the 38th and 48th minutes. Then D. Kasunerenga added a brace in the 57th and 62nd minutes.

Hockey boys go K-Tour to prepare for Asiad

The Malaysia hockey team will go for a five-day tour of South Korea on Aug 27 as preparations for the Asian Games in the same country next month. - AFP
KUALA LUMPUR: The national hockey team will go on a five-day tour to South Korea as part of their preparations for the Asian Games next month.
They will head to Incheon where the Games will be held. The 20 shortlisted players will leave on Aug 27.
National coach A. Arulselvaraj, who took over the team last Tuesday, said the trip is an acclimatisation exercise and to check out the venue.
“We have also made a request to play two matches with the local clubs. So far we have yet to receive confirmation,” he said.
Arulselvaraj added the final 16 players for the Asiad will be named on their return.
“We will decide whether to take one of two goalkeepers to the Games and then name the team when we come back from the tour. At the moment we want to work on the players and sort out the structure for them to play,” he added.
Arulselvaraj took over from K. Dharmaraj as the national coach after the latter was replaced due to problems within the team.
Dharmaraj was coach for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, the Champions Challenge 1, World Cup and the Commonwealth Games.
The Asian Games will be the last assignment for the national team this year. It is also a qualifying tournament for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) want the team to reach the final in Incheon. Only the gold medallists will secure a berth to the Olympics.
Arulselvaraj has named South African Brendan Carolan as his assistant. Arulselvaraj, who is also the chief coach of the project 2016 team, had initially picked Carolan to work with the juniors.
The South African is expected to join the team at the Asian Games.
“I hope he can make it as we are in the process of sorting out his accreditation papers. He is ready to come once we have finalised the details,” added Arulselvaraj.

I too deserve Bharat Ratna, hope to get it in lifetime: Balbir

With Major Dhyan Chand’s name finally being nominated for the Bharat Ratna, another hockey legend Balbir Singh Sr feels going by his achievements he too deserves the country’s highest civilian award and hopes to get the recognition in his lifetime.
Balbir, 90 and a three-time Olympic gold medallist, looks back with satisfaction at his long tryst with the game but feels he has not got the honour he deserves.
The gentle and soft-spoken Balbir, who has only got Padma Shri for his efforts, said it does hurt to get the snub but “awards and rewards are prerogative of the government”.
“If my records and achievements as a player, as a captain, as a coach, as a manager and as an administrator are taken into account, then one should get (Bharat Ratna). But I want to state here that it is either up to God or the prerogative of the government,” Balbir told PTI.
“I hope to get (the highest award) and that too in my lifetime,” he added.
Balbir said all his life he has followed the teachings of Guru Gobind Singh and often the words of Lord Krishna echo in his ears that ‘one should perform his duties, without desiring for results’
Widely regarded as world’s greatest centre forward, Balbir got emotional while recollecting the words of one of his friend Ram Swarup.
“He used to tell me that it is not satya yuga (era of truth), but kalyug (era of vice). Nobody appreciates your achievements unless you blow your own trumpet. But honestly, I don’t know how to blow one’s own trumpet,” he said.
While Balbir expressed his grief for the lack of recognition for his work, his family was more vocal and said the former captain deserves the Bharat Ratna more than any other sportsperson.
“He has created world history. I am very passionate about him. I want the Narendra Modi government to do justice this time. Let the system be transparent. At the moment, it is not transparent because if it was, comparing the performance of all the players, one could choose the right person,” Balbir’s daughter Sushbir Kaur said.
“Why should youngsters work hard if after so many achievements this is what one gets. If a legend can be ignored, what will be the fate of an average sportsperson?” she questioned.
“Here is a person who is waiting for 62 years to get his due. When it comes to awards and rewards, some other people walk away with it. I want justice. I hope, wish and pray that they give justice during his lifetime,” Balbir’s daughter said.
A close associate of Balbir and vice-president of Chandigarh Hockey Association, S K Gupta too opined with Sushbir and said being a triple Olympic gold medallist, a victorious Olympic captain, chief coach and manager of India’s only World Cup winning team in 1975 and as one of the 16 ’iconic Olympians’ across all disciplines since 1896, the start of the modern Olympic era, Balbir deserves more.
“It is unfortunate that he has not been given his due. He deserves a Bharat Ratna,” Gupta said.
Balbir was honoured by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) during the 2012 London Olympics alongwith other great sportsmen like legendary sprinter late Jesse Owens.
Balbir remains the holder of Olympic and world record for the most goals scored by an individual in an Olympic men’s hockey final. He scored five out of the six goals against Holland in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.
He captained the Indian team that won the title in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Besides the iconic centre forward, had also won gold at the 1948 London Olympics.

Bees make confident start to new season
Beeston, the England Champions, began their season with a strong 6-2 friendly win over Loughborough Students on Sunday.
Both sides had players missing and used the fixture to try out squad members in preparation for the National League which gets under way in September.
The Bees had their seven Commonwealth Games players missing but this allowed them to blood a high number of youngsters who are working their way through the Beeston Academy system while they also handed debuts to two new signings: Paul Spies from SSV Ulm (Germany) and Robbie Gleeson who has joined from Olton (Birmingham).
Beeston captain, James Blackwell commented: “We are pleased with the result. Whilst we still have a lot of players resting from international duties, our youngsters stepped up to the mark and it was great to have David Ames (pictured) back from long term injury and controlling the midfield once again.”
A brace of goals from Stuart Pilgrim saw Beeston take an early lead. Gareth Griffiths made it 3-0 in the 20th minute and Richard Lawrence fired in Beeston’s fourth from a penalty corner, in the 31st minute. Loughborough pulled one back as half time approached, through Rhys Doherty.
Sam Apoola increased the Beeston lead in the 50th minute. Loughborough striker, Tom McBean pulled one back in the 57minute before Chris Proctor fired in Beeston’s 6thgoal in the 63rd minute.

Pakistan Hockey Olympians arrested on gambling charges
LAHORE: Eight persons including several hockey Olympians have been arrested by local police on gambling charges.
The accused who were later on released on personal bail on Sunday include Olympians Kamran Ashraf, Mohammad Irfan, Danish Kaleem, Anjum Saeed, a PHF academy coach Zaheer Ahmad and others namely Qamar Irfan, Irfan Zia and Sohail Ashraf.
The accused will appear before the court again on Monday to confirm their bails.
According to police, the culprits were involved in gambling at a guesthouse from where an amount of Rs 35,000 has also been recovered which was at stake.
When contacted, Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) president Akhtar Rasool told Dawn that he had formed a committee comprising Pervaiz Bhindara and Sahir Ahmad as members and headed by Col. Nadeem to complete an in-house inquiry.
He further said that he had also talked to high officials of police to find out the exact situation, adding that strict action would be taken, if anyone was found guilty.
