Pakistan men's hockey team have fallen short in securing a spot for the 2024 Paris Olympics, suffering a 3-2 defeat against New Zealand in the third/fourth place match in Muscat, Oman.
Courtesy of the win, New Zealand qualified for the Paris Olympics, along with Great Britain and Germany while Pakistan's wait for Olympic appearance continued.
This is the third consecutive occasion on which Pakistan have failed to qualify for the Olympics. Three-time Olympic gold medallists were unable to secure their spot in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 too.
Coming into the bronze medal match the 10th world ranked New Zealand team had been the surprise team of the Qualifying Tournament. They were unbeaten in the pool matches having drawn 2-2 with the eventual Qualifier winners, Germany.
Their measured and precise play put the Green Shirts defence under constant pressure and resulted in the penalty corners which they were unable to convert.
Against the run of play, Pakistan forced there 1st corner and Abu Mahmood sounded the boards with his powerful strike to give them the lead.
Kiwis rallied and were able to equalise through Scott Boyd also with penalty corner. Green Shirts were now matching their opponents in midfield and penalty corner led to penalty stroke from which Abu Mahmood regained Pakistani lead on the strike of half time.
The 3rd quarter remained goalless with Kiwis mounting pressure mainly with aerial attacks.
Hugo Inglis was able to sneak an equaliser for the Kiwis from a skirmish in front of goal. The long referral ensued however the goal eventually stood.
With penalty shuttles looming and 2 minutes remaining, a fortuitous deflection fell to Scott Boyde who beat Abdullah Ishtiaq from close range.
The match ended in controversy as the Green shirts had chance of penalty corner as the Kiwi defender they alleged had tackled within 5 mitres distance. However the umpire declined their request.
