Flying start for Germany and Great Britain men in Oman, as Red Lions qualify for semi-final in Valencia



Germany’s men's side made a terrific start to their Olympic qualifying campaign - putting 9 past Canada in Oman. World number 2 ranked Belgium made it 2/2 wins to qualify for the semi-final in Valencia. China pulled off the shock of the day - beating Malaysia 3-2, scoring the winner with 1 second left on the clock. Pool A in Valencia was blown wide open after Belgium women’s side put 10 past Korea and Ireland won 8-0 against Ukraine.

Without creating any clear cut opportunities Belgium dominated the opening exchanges of today’s second match for Ireland Men in their Olympic Qualifiers in Valencia. A well organised Irish defence coped admirably with whatever they were faced with.

To put this game in context after day one here in Valencia, Spain, Ireland and Belgium were in second and third place in Pool A after the Koreans beat Ukraine 3-0 to lead the standings. So Ireland needed to win this game to challenge successfully for a top two place in the pool. Belgium taking on Korea in their second pool game found themselves in a similar situation.

In an opening day face off at the FIH Olympic Qualifier tournament in Oman, Canada encountered a daunting challenge against the fifth-ranked Germany, ultimately succumbing to a sound defeat. From the onset, it was evident that the 17th-ranked Canadian team faced an uphill battle. Germany wasted no time asserting dominance, securing the goal advantage by notching three goals in the opening quarter. The early onslaught reflected Germany’s control over the game, with a grip on possession.

A year and one day on from a 3-1 victory over Chile at the World Cup, the Vantage Black Sticks Men clinched another 3-1 victory against the same opponent in the opening match of their Olympic Qualification campaign.

Great Britain men got their FIH Olympic Qualifiers 2024 campaign off to a stellar start, thrashing Pakistan 6-1 in their opening Group A match in Oman.

Pakistan crashed to Great Britain’s overall superiority in their opening game at Olympic qualifying campaign losing 6-1 in Oman.

Although the Asian team were on the back foot from the start they brought out the first save of the match from the British goalkeeper.

However Great Britain opened the scoring in the 10th minute and doubled their leader just before half time.

The European team, having narrowly failed to qualify through European championships playing as England were relentless in their attacks. Their two weeks acclimatising and preparation in Oman were fully in evidence.

16th-ranked, Pakistan were pinned to defending and hardly had any attacking options as Great Britain extended their lead in the third quarter to 3-0.

Green-shirts had to defend numerous penalty and inevitably Great Britain, scored two further goals to make the score 5-0. Pakistan’s spearhead, Shahid Hannan fresh from the Junior World Cup scored a consolation field goal as they pressed forward in the final quarter.

Just it appeared the Asian time might bring some respectability to the score and brought out superb saves from the opposing goalkeeper it was Great Britain who scored to make the final score 6-1.

Pakistan’s crucial next game is against China, who will be in good spirit having snatched 3-2 last seconds dramatic victory over Malaysia in the first match.

The top three teams in the tournament will qualify for the Paris Olympics later year.
