Youth Olympic Games medal matches set for Sunday

India women joined their men in qualifying for tomorrow's gold medal matches Photo: FIH/WSP

It will be an all-Asian men's final between India and Malaysia while Argentina women will play India for the gold medals in the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games hockey events tomorrow.

As a result, Argentina men will play Zambia and China women will face South Africa for the bronze medals.

The medal games were confirmed following the conclusion of the Semi-Finals at Youth Olympic Park today.

The first Semi-Final of the day saw Malaysia men defeat Zambia 7-4 in what was a thrilling encounter. Malaysia's Akhimullah Anuar was once again the star of the show, grabbing a hattrick in this match. Speaking afterwards, Malaysia captain Amirul Azahar said: “First of all I am really happy because we qualified for the gold medal match. We had a good game today against a great Zambia team. My team did really well and we fought until the very last minute. I hope in the final we will play better than today and improve and work as a unit. We are anticipating a great final tomorrow.”

The second men's Semi-Final saw two high-fliers, Argentina and India, go head to head. Despite another huge crowd filling the stands they could not inspire the local team as hosts Argentina struggled against a resolute Indian team who were structured in defence and clinical in attack. Two goals from Sudeep Chirmako and another from Rahul Kumar Rajbhar was enough to take a 3-1 win to put India into tomorrow's gold medal match. Speaking after their win, India's Maninder Singh said: "We are really excited as it's the first time India's qualified for Youth Olympics Final. Beating a fantastic team of Argentina in their own ground is just amazing. Really, it is difficult to express the feeling me and my team have right now!”

In the first women's Semi-Final, reigning champions China, who had been undefeated so far in this event, were knocked out by Asian giants India. Goals from Reet, Mumtaz Khan and Lalremsiami were enough to secure a 3-0 win to take them in to tomorrow's gold medal match. Following their victory, Ishika Chaudhary said: “We are in Finals! Thanks to the crowd for supporting us! We feel very good and the team played so well! The team has worked really hard and we are very prepared for the finals - we are already looking forward to it.”

The last women's Semi-Final of the day saw hosts Argentina continue their unstoppable form as they won 11-0 against South Africa to continue their unbeaten record in this event. A hattrick from Josefina Rubenacker was one of many highlights for the home fans who will be thrilled to see their women's team reach the gold medal match. After their win, Argentina's Gianella Palet said: "This is unique and incredible! We are really happy! Now we need to do video analysis and get prepared to try and bring the gold medal home tomorrow!"

Earlier in the day, in the women's event, Mexico defeated Vanuatu 5-0 in the 11-12 match, Uruguay beat Zimbabwe 2-0 in the 9-10 match while Australia won 5-1 against Namibia and Austria defeated Poland 3-1 in the 5-8 classification matches.

In the men's event, Australia won 8-3 against Austria and Poland defeated Bangladesh 5-4 in the 5-8 classification matches.

By Jugjet Singh

Akhimullah -- 20-goal hero.

KUALA KUMPUR: The Malaysian men's under-18 team romped into the Youth Olympics final when they beat Zambia 7-4 in Buenos Aires Sunday morning.

They will play India for gold, after the Asian masters beat Argentina 3-1 in the other semifinals.

And yet again, Akhimullah Anuar Esook was Malaysia's super-hero as he scored a hat-trick to take his personal tally to 20 goals.

Akhimullah scored his first 30 seconds after the start, then in the eight minute and to cap a fine day, got his hat-trick 30 seconds from the end of time.

The other goals were scored by Firdaus Rosdi (third, sixth), Muhibuddin Moharam (11th) and Syarman Mat Tee (12th).

Zambia had upset Australia 6-4 in the quarter-finals, and were the revelation of the tournament.

At the group stage, Malaysia had only lost to Argentina 4-2, while India had only lost to Australia 4-3.

Assured of a medal, Malaysia must now play for gold in their maiden Youth Olympics appearance.

Indian men’s, women’s teams enter hockey 5s final

The Indian men’s and women’s teams advanced to the final of hockey 5s competition in the Youth Olympics after registering emphatic wins over their respective opponents here.

India defeated hosts Argentina 3-1 in the men’s semifinal match on Saturday while the women’s team beat China 3-0 in their last-four match.

The Indian men face Malaysia in the summit clash while their women counterparts take on hosts Argentina in the final.

This is the first time India is taking part in a hockey competition in the Youth Olympics. The country did not feature in the earlier two editions.

Hockey 5s, the five-a-side version, is played on a pitch smaller than the normal 11-player game and it was introduced in the 2014 Singapore Youth Olympics.

In the men’s semifinal match, Sudeep Chirmako (12th and 18th minute) and Rahul Kumar Rajbhar (3th) scored for India while captain Facundo Zarate found the target for Argentina.

India took the lead through Rahul Kumar but Argentina were quick to equalise as they scored through Facundo Zarate in the 4th minute.

Both the teams had chances in the remaining six minutes of the first period but their goalkeepers made some fine saves to keep the scores locked at 1-1 at half-time.

In the second period, India maintained pressure and benefited from it as they took the lead in the 12th minute through Sudeep Chirmako who produced a fine finish to swing the match in India’s favour.

Indian goalkeeper Prashant Chauhan kept his team in the lead as he was called into action again in the next few minutes to deny the hosts of an equaliser.

Indian attackers also created chances and were successful again in the 18th minute as Sudeep Chirmako scored his second goal of the match to give a two-goal advantage for his side.

Argentina tried to make a comeback in the dying minutes but the Indians stood firm and denied the home side any more goal.

In the women’s semifinal, India outplayed their Chinese opponents with goals coming from Mumtaz Khan (1st minute), Reet (5th) and Lalremsiami (13th).

India dominated the match right from the start as they put pressure on the Chinese defence by keeping possession.

The Indian team was rewarded for their efforts as Mumtaz Khan scored just after 52 seconds. Even after that, India kept the possession and created several chances from inside and outside the 11-metres area.

The 5th minute saw Indian midfielder Reet make a fierce shot from the half-way line, which beat the Chinese goalkeeper Xinyi Zhu on her right and gave her side a 2-0 lead.

China tried to create opportunities in the remaining few minutes but Indian defenders were up to their task as their side took the two-goal advantage into the half-time break.

India dominated the second period as well, finding space in the opposition’s half and creating chances for themselves.

In the 13th minute, it was forward Lalremsiami who was stopped from taking a shot by a Chinese player, which meant that India were awarded a Penalty Challenge. Lalremsiami converted it as she scored her eighth goal of the competition and gave India a 3-0 lead.

Oates Inspires U21s To Sultan Of Johor Cup Title

GB U21 Win 2018 SoJC

Two goals from James Oates helped Great Britain’s U21s Men secure their second Sultan of Johor title with a superb victory over India.

The Hampstead & Westminster midfielder struck twice in the third quarter, assisted on both occasions by Cameron Golden, who finished the event as Britain’s top scorer.

That came after Daniel West had equalised for the 2015 champions after Gursahibjit Singh’s fourth minute opener.

Abishek’s outrageous strike dragged India back into the tie with five minutes remaining but Britain’s defence - the meanest in the tournament - held firm to go one better than last year’s silver medal.

Eager to avenge their dramatic loss to to the same opponents yesterday, India began firmly on the front foot as Mandeep Mor forced Ollie Payne - who was later named as the ‘Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament’ - into a flying save from a second minute corner.

There was nothing the Durham University ‘keeper could do to keep out Gursahibjit shortly after though as his reverse stick shot took a wicked deflection.

Britain then got their own slice of luck three minutes later as Draper’s cross was only half blocked and fell beautifully for West, who smashed the ball between Pankaj Rajak’s legs.

The teams then took it in turns to apply pressure throughout the second quarter but another breakthrough proved elusive, with a dangerous but untouched cross from Abishek and a Matthew Ramshaw effort smothered by Pankaj the only notable moments.

Patience paid off for Jon Bleby’s side however as they took a 34th minute lead, with West again involved as he forced the ball into the box before Golden set up Oates to smash it past Pankaj.

They almost doubled their advantage two minutes later but this time Pankaj was able to smother West’s effort before Thomas Russell fired the ball the wrong side of the post.

Despite being temporarily down to ten men, it was Great Britain who struck again in the 43rd minute as Golden exploited space down the right baseline before an intelligent cutback found Oates unmarked, allowing the Player of the Match to smash in his second.

Payne was forced into an important save at his near post with just eight minutes remaining but he was could do nothing to stop Abishek’s stunning tomahawk shortly after.

Vishal Antil then led a swift counter attack in the 56th minute but his shot was blocked by his own team-mate before the rebound was scuffed over Payne’s goal in what was to prove to be his side’s final effort of the game.

Golden almost grabbed himself a deserved goal in the dying moments but was denied by Pankaj, although it was not to matter as his side became the third team - alongside India and Australia - to win the title on two occasions.

Great Britain’s hockey men lift Sultan of Johor title

Great Britain men’s under-21 side won their second Sultan of Johor title on Saturday after holding off a late surge from India to prevail 3-2 in Malaysia.

India had more possession, circle penetration and penalty corners but a stoic performance left GB with their first title since 2015.

Two goals from James Oates proved the difference after the Hampstead & Westminster midfielder struck twice in the third quarter, assisted on both occasions by Cameron Golden, who finished the event as Britain’s top scorer with five goals.

That came after Daniel West had equalised for the 2015 champions after Gursahibjit Singh’s fourth minute opener, which followed a stunning flying save by Ollie Payne Sultan of Johor title to keep out an early Mandeep Mor corner flick.

Payne was later handed goalkeeper of the tournament, while Oates was given player of the match.

Abishek’s brilliant reverse strike dragged India back into the final with five minutes remaining but Britain’s defence – the meanest in the tournament, conceding 11 times – held firm as Jon Bleby’s side went one better than last year’s silver.

Golden almost grabbed himself a deserved goal in the dying moments but was denied by Pankaj Rajak, although it was not to matter as his side became the third team – alongside India and Australia – to win the tournament on two occasions.

JOHOR BARU: Britain lifted their second Sultan of Johor Cup after beating India 3-2 to emerge champions.

Britain defeated India in the 2015 final and history repeated last night at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium.

Two goals from James Oates (34th and 42nd minutes) and Daniel West (seventh) ensured it was Britain’s night of glory while India replied via Gursahibjit Singh (third minute) and Abhishek (54th).

Meanwhile, Malaysia finished fifth after a 6-3 win over New Zealand.

The Malaysians posted only their second win of the tournament after they drew 5-5 with New Zealand and edged Japan 1-0 in the preliminary round.

Once again, the Malaysians took an early lead against the Kiwis and kept up the attack till the end.

The script for the fifth-placing match seems to run like their preliminary round match. The Malaysians were 4-0 up by the 28th minute but the Kiwis attempted a fightback and the score then stood 5-3 for the hosts by the 46th minute.

The last 10 minutes saw some frantic work by both sides to try to win the match but Malaysia held firm to prevail 6-3.

Malaysian forward Mohamed Abu Kamal scored four goals (in the first, 12th, 36th and 60th minutes) while Mohamed Khalid and Mohamed Zaidi added the other goals in the 23rd and 29th minutes.

The Kiwis’ scorers were Maks Wyndham Smith (30), Kalyan Jeram (33) and Tim Neild (46).

Malaysia coach Nor Saiful Zaini said that it was good to have won another match in the tournament.

“We scored from our counter-attacks and it’s good to be able to score field goals like these,” he said.

“The players must learn to adapt to the fast game and not take it easy when leading but this, of course, comes with experience.”

For the third and fourth placing, Australia defeated Japan 6-1.

Johor Bahru: India suffered a heart-breaking 2-3 loss to Great Britain to settle for the silver medal at the eighth Sultan of Johor Cup U-18 hockey tournament on Saturday.

The silver, however, enabled India to better its last year's bronze medal finish.

Great Britain, who finished runners-up last year, secured their second Sultan of Johor Cup title by virtue of Saturday's win.

The summit clash Saturday was a repeat of round robin match between the two sides, where Great Britain got the better of India by identical margin.

India made a strong start to the final earning an early penalty corner opportunity and they capitalised on the chance when Vishnukant Singh scored from a rebound in the fourth minute.

India's enjoyed the lead for just three minutes as Great Britain drew level in the seventh minute through Daniel West's field goal.

The second quarter witnessed an even contest between the two teams as they challenged each other with good playing structure and tested each other's backlines.

Great Britain upped the ante in the third quarter and scored two crucial goals in the 39th minute and 42nd minute through James Oates that changed the course of the match.

A 3-1 lead gave Great Britain the edge going into the final quarter as the Indians looked desperate to turn things around.

The Indians did manage to reduce the scoreline in the 55th minute through Abhishek but they failed to get another shot at the Britain goal.

Ben Somerford

The Burras have claimed third place in the Sultan of Johor Cup after a comfortable 6-1 win over Japan at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium on Saturday night.

It was revenge for the defending champions Australia, as they had lost their opening match to the Japanese 2-1 which ultimately cost them a place in the final.

The match proved to be lopsided with the Australians controlling play from the start.

ACT pair Niranjan Gupte and Ben Staines scored a brace for the Australians in the match.

Gupte’s goals came in the fifth and 38th minute while Staines was on target in the ninth and 34th minutes.

Gupte was also named the man-of-the-match.

The other goal scorers for the Australians were Damon Steffens (17’) and Jake Staines (58’). Steffens ended the tournament with nine goals.

Australian coach Chris O’Reilly said it was a well-deserved finish with the bronze medal.

“We’re a little disappointed not being in the final,” he said.

“But pleased to beat Japan in the second meeting and we had a good game which saw some good goals.

“I am happy with what we were able to do here and I am sure the players would have learned a lot form the outings.”

Malaysia avoid the embarrassment

By Jugjet Singh

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia avoided an embarrassing end to the Sultan of Johor Cup when they beat New Zealand 6-3 at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium today.

In the group stage, New Zealand had held Malaysia to a 5-5 draw, but today, there was more urgency in coach Nor Saiful Zaini's boys.

Azrai Aizad was the toast, as he not only gave Malaysia a first minute lead, but also ended up scoring four goals (first, 12th, 36th, 60th).

The other goals were scored by Fahmi Khalid (23rd) and Hafizhuddin Zaidi (29th).

Maks Smith (30th), Kalyan Jeram (33rd) and Tim Neild (46th) scored for New Zealand.

"My players managed to get their act togther in the last three matches. I believe they need more international exposure to become better,” said Nor Saiful.

"The SOJC squad have three players who can play in the 2021 Junior World Cup, while seven from the Youth Olympics are also eligible.”

New Zealand assistant coach Jude Menezes said: "We gained much from this tournament playing against some of the top juniors in the world, something quite difficult for us get back home.”

Tuks captain Lembethe will play for South Africa in hockey World Cup

Tuks’s hard-working hockey captain, Peabo Lembethe, was rewarded for his good performances this year with a place in the South African team to participate in the World Cup tournament in India in November.

According to Peabo Lembethe his inclusion in the national team for the hockey World Cup this is a dream comes true for him. Photo: Reg Caldecott

The Tuks men’s hockey captain, Peabo Lembethe, has been selected for the South African team that will be competing at the FIH World Cup in Bhubaneswar, India in November this year.

According to Lembethe this is a dream comes true for him.

“Ever since I seriously started playing hockey it was my dream to play for the South African senior side. Now I have got my opportunity, and I am going to do my utmost not to lead the team down,” said the star player form Tuks.

His coach at Tuks, Guy Elliot, does not doubt for one moment that Lembethe will step up to the plate when it matters. And he should know as he coached Lembethe while he was still at Maritzburg College and for the last three years at the university.

Peabo Lembethe in action in the colours of Tuks. Photo: Reg Caldecott

“Peabo’s is the first name I will write down whenever I select any team. People who are not that knowledgeable about hockey might wonder why as he is hardly a flashy player. I think that is maybe why it took so long before he got selected to play for the Proteas. He has got an unbelievable work rate and an ever sense of what is happening on the field. He is possibly one of the best distributors. He will never just pass the ball for the sake of doing so. He has a plan with every pass he makes,” Elliot explained his admiration for Lembethe.

As far as Lembethe is concerned, he is just doing what is expected from him.

“I don’t care whether people notice what I do during a game as I always only got one goal and that is ensuring the team I am playing for wins. If they do, it is mission accomplished. That is what makes doing the ‘donkey work’ worthwhile,” said Lembethe who captained the Tuks men’s side to their first ever Varsity-title earlier this year.

Lembethe is realistic to what awaits him and his teammates during the World Cup. South Africa is ranked 15.

South Africa plays India on 28 November, Canada on 2 December and Belgium on 8 December.

Thundersticks Beat Reigning AHL Champs, SA Record Wins

Ben Somerford

Victoria and Western Australia have shared the wins in Saturday afternoon’s Round Two Australian Hockey League (AHL) matches in Melbourne.

Victoria Vikings 2 (Hendry 10', Ford 28') WA Thundersticks 4 (Gabriel 14', 14', Geers 41', 42'), Melbourne

The WA Thundersticks have shocked reigning AHL champions Victoria Vikings in their clash at Melbourne's State Netball and Hockey Centre.

Ten-time national champions WA triumphed 4-2 over the Vics with Jason Gabriel and Tim Geers both scoring doubles for the visitors.

The result means WA shoots to top spot in Pool A with two wins and 10 points from two games.

WA had to come from behind, with Max Hendry putting the Vikings ahead after 10 minutes, before Gabriel's converted field goal in the 14th minute made it 2-1.

Russell Ford netted from a 28th minute penalty corner to level it up before half-time.

But WA took the win, despite being reduced to 10 men followed Frazer Gerrard's 40th minute yellow card, when Geers converted a minute later.

Victoria Vipers 1 (Ratcliffe 60') WA Diamonds 0, Melbourne

Madi Ratcliffe scored with 15 seconds left to help reigning champions Victoria Vipers to a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over the WA Diamonds.

The Vipers had the better of the first-half chances but couldn't find a way through.

WA took their PumpPlay with five minutes left and scores still 0-0, but it was the hosts who netted after Emily Hurtz won a last minute short corner.

The penalty corner broke down for the Vipers, but in dramatic scenes, Ratcliffe fired in a 60th minute field goal to win it.

WA hosts NT at Perth Hockey Stadium next Saturday, while Victoria welcomes SA to Melbourne too.

SA Suns 3 (McMahon 30’ PP, 41’) NT Pearls 0, Adelaide

Hockeyroo Karri McMahon scored twice, including a PumpPlay goal, as the SA Suns secured a top two spot in Pool A after a 3-0 win over the NT Pearls at Adelaide’s State Hockey Centre on Saturday night.

The Pearls proved stubborn to break down following last round’s 13-0 thrashing from Victoria, determined to deny SA any attacking opportunities.

However, upon SA’s PumpPlay, when both sides were reduced to nine players and the Suns’ goals were worth double, McMahon netted right on the stroke of half-time to make it 2-0.

McMahon couldn’t convert her resultant field goal conversion, with NT keeper Elizabeth Duguid denying her.

And it was Berri product McMahon who sealed the win in the third quarter with a 41st minute drag flick to make it 3-0.

The result leaves SA on 10 points from two games after last round’s win over WA, only behind Victoria on goal difference.

SA takes on the reigning champions Victoria in Round Three on Saturday in Melbourne.

SA Hotshots 5 (Gleeson 12’, 37’, 37’, Oliver 4’, 4’) NT Stingers 0, Adelaide

The SA Hotshots have bounced back from their last-gasp opening round loss to record a 5-0 win over NT Stingers at Adelaide’s State Hockey Centre on Saturday night.

Alastair Oliver opened the scoring in the fourth minute, before coolly slotting his field goal conversion, with NT fearing another heavy loss after last round’s 12-4 defeat to Victoria.

The Stingers rallied, but Brodie Gleeson added a third in the 12th minute, although NT keeper Adam Luck thwarted his conversion attempt.

NT’s Jamie Hullick was yellow carded in the 34th minute and the Hotshots capitalised with Gleeson adding another three minutes later.

Gleeson netted a field goal, before completing his conversion to round out the scoring and keep alive SA’s top two hopes.

SA sits third in the pool, with WA top with 10 points and Victoria second on five, but ahead of the Hotshots on goal difference.

Irish Hockey League: Pegasus and Banbridge top standings

Alex Speers netted twice to help Pegasus to victory over Ulster rivals Ards

Pegasus and Banbridge sit top of the Irish Hockey League standings after recording victories on Saturday over Ards and YMCA respectively.

In the women's IHL there was a first defeat for Belfast Harlequins.

Lisnagarvey and Cookstown were both well beaten by Dublin sides Three Rock Rovers and Monkstown in the men's IHL.

Pegasus are the only side with a 100% record as they made it three wins out of three with a comfortable 4-0 Ulster derby win at Ards.

Alex Speers scored twice for the Belfast side with Steph Quinn and Kate Gourley adding the others.

Pegs moved three points clear after Loreto were beaten 2-0 by UCD with Abbie Russell scoring twice for the students.

After taking four points from a possible six to start the season, there were high hopes at Deramore that Belfast Harlequins could continue their good form at home to previously pointless Cork Harlequins.

However, led by an imperious performance from Irish International Cliodhna Sargent, who marshalled the Cork defence, the visitors stymied the Belfast attack and they took their chances with Olivia Roycroft, Michelle Barry and Zara Bowles scoring in a 3-0 win.

Elsewhere, Irish World Cup silver medallists Emily Beatty and Gillian Pinder scored the goals as Pembroke recorded their first win of the campaign, a 2-0 victory over Railway Union while Old Alex beat Muckross 5-1.

Banbridge moved clear at the top of the men's IHL with their third win in four matches after goals from Johnny McKee and David Rea were enough to beat Dublin YMCA 2-1 at Havelock Park. Glenanne are a point behind after a 6-2 win over Pembroke.

Lisnagarvey went down to a 4-1 defeat at Three Rock Rovers with the defending champions easing to victory thanks to goals from Luke Madeley, Conor Empey, Mitch Darling and Mark English.

Change at the top of Scottish National League 1

There are new leaders at the top of tonight`s National League 1 tables, Clydesdale`s 5-4 win over Uddingston propelled them into pole position in the men`s competition while Wildcats clawed their way to king of the jungle with a 3-1 win over rivals Dundee Wanderers.

Teenager Struan Walker was the catalyst in Clydesdale`s narrow victory over Uddingston, his four goals knocked the stuffing out of the Lanarkshire side, David Clark got the other. But again Aussie Brad Hughes was on target for Uddingston with a hat-trick, the other goal came from Chris Boyle.

Grange moved into second place after seeing off Edinburgh University 4-0 at Peffermill. The champions were three up at the interval, Aussie Dylan Bean scored twice from penalty corners while Frank Ryan got the other. The second half was a more even affair but Todd Mills added a fourth for Grange.

Western Wildcats were 10-0 winners over bottom side Gordonians, the highlight was five goals from Andrew McConnell. Elsewhere Fraser Moran and Fraser Calder both scored twice and the other strike came from Euan Cowan.

Hillhead were toppled from pole position after going down 6-2 to Grove Menzieshill on Tayside. Hillhead coach Mark Ralph confessed to a “sloppy” first half but second half strikes by Andrew Black and Callum Duke brought some respectability back to the occasion.

However, Grove Menziesihill`s triumph was highlighted by a hat-trick from Paul Martin, Jamie Golden scored twice while Albert Rowling got the other.

Western Wildcats moved to the top of women`s National League 1 with a 3-1 win over rivals Dundee Wanderers at Auchenhowie.

The Taysiders went into the lead but soon after Mckenzie Bell levelled for Wildcats when she sneaked in at the back post. Erin Steven from a narrow angle put the Wildcats` noses in front and at an overtime penalty corner Becky Ward secured the three points.

Grove Menzieshill slipped into third spot in the table with a comfortable 6-3 win over Hillhead. However, that was not so evident in the first half which ended 1-1 with the Hillhead keeper making at least 16 saves to preserve parity.

Grove coach David Stott admitted that it was a “great second half in challenging conditions” as the Dundonians added five more goals. In total Lucy Smith scored twice and the other goals came from Lucy Murray, sisters Katie and Ellie Stott and finally Katie Robertson.

Watsonians returned to winning ways with a narrow 1-0 win over GHK, a drag flick penalty corner conversion by Emily Newlands just before half-time proved to be the only goal of the contest.

The lack of further goals perhaps came from the fact that Watsonians were short of five regulars while the GHK defence was in stingy mood.

Watsonians coach Keith Smith said: “We dominated the game in terms of possession and really controlled play, but just couldn`t quite connect as fluidly as we would have liked in the final third.”

The Glasgow University versus Clydesdale Western clash fell foul of the weather with the Glasgow National Hockey Centre pitch waterlogged.

Police edge Jaguars to pile pressure on Butali

Champions Kenya Police laboured to beat Western Jaguars 1-0 in Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) men’s Premier League match played at Eregi Teachers Training College (ETTC) ground on Saturday.

The victory saw Police take their tally to 45 points from 17 matches and enhance their chances of replacing leaders Butali Warriors who take on Nairobi Simba on Sunday at City Park.

Kenyan international Willis Okeyo put the defending champions ahead through a penalty after Jaguars Aarun Kutwa fouled Robert Masibo in the area 25 minutes into the match.

Police coach Fred Masibo was impressed by his attack despite the slim margin.

“The forwards did a good job. They mounted impressive strikes. Above all team work made us win the encounter,” said Masibo after the match.

He pointed out that his major focus is to win the league and write history in the African Club Championship.

“We have made appearance in the Continental showpiece but we have never won that title. We are determined to reach there and lift the crown for the first time in the history of this club,” he added.

Jaguars Tactician Peter Okova rued missed chances by his charges.

“We started well, we had golden scoring opportunities but poor finishing cost,” he said.

The hosts took advantage of the home ground to dictate the pace of the match and barely five minutes after kick-off Dan Kuya fastened on a loose ball in the box but his shot hit the cross bar.

The law-enforcers regained composure and started mounting more pressure on their opponents whom they defeated 4-0 in the first leg that was held at City Park in Nairobi last month.

As the match advanced, goal-bound Masibo was brought down in the box by Kutwa and umpire Paul Mungai awarded Police a penalty which Okeyo calmly slotted  home past Custodian Gilbert Okanga.

Willis Malesi could have equalized on the stroke of half time when he rounded up defence kingpin Samuel Ounga but the former’s shot was well taken by former National team goalkeeper Martin Egesa.

On resumption, the City lads seemed to have learned the playing pattern of their opponents and in the 55th minute Brian Saina got the better of defender Wyne Kipkorir but his shot was contained by custodian Okanga.

Police dominated the second half with forwards Oliver Echenje, Calvin Kanu and Moses Chaplait making numerous raids in their opponents' danger zone as they sought to extend their lead.

Jaguars found their way back into the match late in the second half but Edgar Juma, Fred Okumu and Kelvin Machinji were all thwarted by Police's strong defence marshalled by Oungo.

Amira share spoils with JKUAT in City Park, Nairobi

Chase Amira's hopes of registering their fifth win of the season were dashed yesterday after their clash against Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) ended in a 1-1 draw at City Park.

Amira are currently third in the women's Premier League standings behind defending champions Telkom and Strathmore University Scorpions.

A win yesterday would have seen them reduce the gap between them and second-placed Strathmore. It now means they remain in third spot with 13 points 11 less than Scorpions.

Amira coach Thomas Mucheni could not hide his disappointment. "I am disappointed, this is not the result I expected. This was a game we should have won, but it is unfortunate that we dropped two crucial points," Mucheni said.

He said their aim is to finish in top three and they need to win their remaining matches. "We must work on our weak points ahead of our remaining matches. A top three finish is within reach, but we need to remain focused so we can end the season well."

Amira dominated the match from the onset enjoying possession as JKUAT struggled to match their prowess. They however failed to make their dominance count losing scoring opportunities in the first and second quarter. Aneta Okumu gave Amira the lead seconds to the break of the second quarter to gift her side with a 1-0 lead.

On resumption, the students played defensively thwarthing Amira's efforts of scoring as Pauline Naise's shots were stopped by JKUAT goalkeeper Emma Aruni.
