Croatia Cup 2018 - SPAR South Africa off to a scintillating start

The weather had warmed up slightly in Zagreb as the 2018 Croatian Cup got underway at the Zelina Sports Hall. It was probably an early indication that things were about to heat up on the court and it didn’t take long for that to be the case.

Slovakia vs. SPAR South Africa

The SPAR South Africa ladies started the match on fire and were awarded for that dominant display up front as Kelly Reed won two penalty corners and Kara Botes finished off the second to give an early lead. It was a statement of intent and a statement that was duly backed up over the remainder of the first half.

The SPAR South Africa ladies were showing their experience and Kelly Reed, Cindy Hack, Kara Botes and in particular Celia Evans were combining regularly with devastating impact. SPAR South Africa led 6-0 at halftime with keeper Nicole la Fleur only having to make one save the whole half. Instead, all the action was happening in the Slovakian half, in the first ever test between these two nations. Each of Kara Botes, Kelly Reed, and Cindy Hack had earned themselves a brace.

The second half saw a slight improvement in the defensive play from the Slovakians and they managed to pull a goal back when a shot on target was blocked with a foot to award the Slovakians a Penalty stroke that was well converted although Greyvenstein did get a touch to it. That, however, just saw the South Africans raise their game further. Some of the combination play on view was simply superb and, with a little more finesse the score could have been higher than the Indian Cricket team’s against the Protea’s today!

Cindy Hack finished off her hat-trick and netted another after great teamwork, while Kelly Reed also got a hat-trick. The other goal was scored by Heather McEwan after a fine assist from the lively Celia Evans. And that took the game to a 10-1 finish and a successful start for the SPAR South Africa side.

“Today we really brought it on the court. There were times today when I almost wanted to just step back and watch because our teamwork in offensive play was fantastic. Everyone played for the team and there were very few errors. It’s also rewarding that in games like that it’s easy for the level to drop off, but the fact that we only gave away one PC in the whole game shows that we were on our game from first to the last whistle!” shared Celia Evans after the opening victory.

SPAR South Africa 9-0 Croatia League Select

SPAR South Africa’s second game of the night was an exhibition game against the Croatian “League Select” side, a group of up and coming players all aged around 18. The game itself is not an official test match (much like a Barbarians Rugby game) and does not form part of the points table for the Croatian Cup.

SPAR South Africa was workmanlike and hat-tricks from Kelly Reed and Tegan Fourie inspired a complete 9-0 victory. (Cindy Hack, Celia Evans and Jess O’Connor got the other three)

European selection win Hockey Reyes trophy in Barcelona

©: Jm Llorens

The European selection team won the Hockey Reyes men’s title on Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 success against hosts Real Club de Polo.

It proved a high quality, close-fought match between a European team full of international stars, both active and retired, like Florian Fuchs and Valentin Verga and the Polo side that will compete in the EHL KO16 next Easter in Rotterdam.

On a sunny day, the crowd was entertained by a game full of vertical counter-attacks and a high skill set.

For Polo, the scorers were Manu Bordas, Pablo Abadal and David Alegre while for Polo player Xavi Lleonart – now with HC Bloemendaal – netted twice for the European selection.

Fürste produces magic eight in incredible victory over TG Heimfeld

©: Frank Uijlenbroek / World Sport Pics

Moritz Fürste’s magic eight goals won an epic battle for UHC Hamburg, out-doing Alex Otte’s seven goals for TG Heinfeld in a mad 10-8 win in the German indoor league today.

The win keeps UHC within touching distance of the top of the north regional league ahead of a Sunday game with Hamburg rivals Polo.

Coach Kais al Saadi said his UHC side “got away with a black eye” rather than a knock-out blow as they trailed 5-3 and 7-5 before Fürste scored five times in as many minutes to score the victory.

Otte started the scoring two minutes into the game before Christopher Kutter equaliser and Fürste put UHC in front for a first time. Otte and Fürste exchanged goals to see the game level at 3-3 at half-time.

Otte and Niklas Reuter put Heimfeld in the clear before Fürste and Tino Teschke tied the game up at 5-5 with 13 minutes to go.

Again, Heimfeld moved two goals ahead with another pair of Otte strikes and they looked well set for the win with five minutes to go at 7-5.

But the Fürste went ballistic with the next four goals between the 55th and 57th minute. Otte got one back to reduce the gap to 9-8 but Fürste made extra sure with his sixth goal from play and eighth overall.

"Without doubt, a totally spectacular match for the spectators, but a bad one for the nerves of a coach," al Saadi concluded.

The win keeps UHC in third in their group with Harvestehuder THC leading – two points ahead on 15 – with Club an der Alster sandwiced in between.

In the West, Rot-Weiss Köln continued their perfect start to the season thanks to a 7-6 win over SW Neuss, Joshua Delarber scoring twice. It keeps them six points ahead of Crefelder.

In the South, TSV Mannheim lead the way with five wins from six following their 4-2 win over Ludwigsburg with Mannheimer HC, Nuremburg HTC and SC Frankfurt battling for second spot.

In the East, BW Berlin, Berliner HC and Lichterfelde are allin the shake-up for playoff places.

Wimbledon and Surbiton secure finals spot in Jaffa Super 6s

Wimbledon and Surbiton both wrapped up qualification for the Jaffa Super 6s Finals Day at the Copper Box Arena with two games two spare as both picked up six points at Bromsgrove School on Saturday.

Surbiton were the first side to qualify for the Finals on January 28, two goals each from Rob Farrington, William Marshall and Alan Forsyth helping them to a 7-4 win over Loughborough Students, before beating Team Bath Buccaneers 6-2, Scotland and GB international Forsyth netting three more.

Wimbledon are top of the standings and booked their place at finals day with two wins, helped largely by the goals of Ed Horler.

The England international scored four times in Wimbledon’s 7-3 win over Holcombe before adding a further three in the final game of the day, a 6-3 win against Loughborough Students, to take his tally for the competition to 17.

Team Bath Buccaneers came into the day top of the table but lost both games on Saturday.

They will still be favourites to qualify, but they lost 6-3 to East Grinstead before their loss to Surbiton.

It was a good day for East Grinstead though, Ashley Jackson and Simon Faulkner were on target in that victory which they followed up with a 7-2 victory over Brooklands MU.

Ross Stott starred in that game netting four times, East Grinstead currently sit in fourth place just one victory away from qualification.

Sevenoaks are best placed to make a late push for the top four, they started the day with an important 4-3 victory over Brooklands MU, Duncan Parnis scoring two.

They were dealt a blow however in their second outing, losing by the same scoreline to Reading, former GB international Richard Mantell hitting a hat-trick.

That result was Reading’s second 4-3 victory of the day after their earlier defeat of Holcombe, both sides very much outsiders to break into the top four.

East Grinstead require just one point on Sunday to ensure qualification for the Jaffa Super 6s Finals Day at the Copper Box Arena, despite falling to their first defeat of the Women's Premier Division competition at the Phoenix Sport and Leisure Centre in Telford on Saturday.

A brace from Olympic Gold Medal winner Kate Richardson-Walsh was not enough to prevent East Grinstead losing 5-2 to Leicester in their opening game on Saturday, Chloe Rogers and Lauren Turner both scoring twice for the victors.

They bounced back later in the day, edging out Bowdon Hightown 1-0 in a game full of Olympic heroes, Kate Richardson-Walsh scoring the only goal and Great Britain goalkeeper Amy Tennant keeping a shut out to put East Grinstead on the brink of qualification.

Bowdon sit second in the table and are themselves just one win away from making finals day, they started Saturday with a 5-2 win over Holcombe, GB Olympian Tina Cullen scoring two in a team which also included Rio Olympic gold medal-winning Sam Quek.

After their win over East Grinstead, third-placed Leicester played out an exciting 5-5 draw against fourth place Slough to remain unbeaten. If Lauren Turner’s form continues, Leicester will be a good bet to make finals day - she added a hat-trick to her earlier brace to take her tally for the competition to 17.

Charly Brydon scored two as Slough defeated Sutton Coldfield 4-3 to secure one-point lead over the chasing pack in the final qualification spot.

One win and one defeat for Canterbury kept them in the hunt. After losing the day’s opening game 3-2 to Clifton Robinsons, they bounced back to shut out Reading in a 6-0 victory, Paris Gaisson scoring two.

Holcombe are also just a point behind fourth place, they recovered from their early loss on Saturday to claim a 4-2 victory over Clifton Robinsons, Olympic gold medal winner Ellie Watton netting her seventh of the tournament.

Meanwhile in the final game of the day, Sutton Coldfield defeated Reading 4-3 but both sides had already been eliminated.

Grove Menzieshill maintain perfect record in men’s indoor Nat 1

Grove Menzieshill maintained perfect record – photo by Duncan Gray

Grove Menzieshill seem untouchable, their back-to-back victories over Hillhead and Clydesdale confirmed their perfect record and pole position in Scottish Men’s indoor National League 1 before the competition advances to the group stages. Following the other results Bromac Kelburne and Inverleith occupy second and third places respectively while Dundee Wanderers advanced to fourth at the expense of Clydesdale.

Grove Menzieshill started their day with a comfortable 10-4 win over Hillhead to maintain their perfect record and pole position in the league table. Andrew Hilton opened for Hillhead in only three minutes, but by the interval the champions were 6-2 in front, Gavin Tomlinson scored twice with Ross McPherson, Gavin Byers, Ben Cromar and Albert Rowling also on target, David Gay replied for the Glasgow side.

The Taysiders added four more in the second half, Rowling collected his second, Aidan McQuade scored while Ben Cosgrove got a late double, Andrew Black and Callum Duke got Hillhead`s consolations.

Ali Richmond had the audacity to give Clydesdale an early lead in Grove Menzieshill`s second outing of the day, but by the interval Ben Cromar and Albert Rowling had restored normal service for a 2-1 half-time lead. The Taysiders cut loose in the second half with nine further goals without reply, Rowling added another three, there were doubles for Gavin Tomlinson and Cromar while Cameron Golden and Gavin Byers got the others.

Bromac Kelburne maintained their winning sequence, but only just by getting the better of Clydesdale in a 15-goal thriller in their opening game of the day. However, with two minutes to go it was the Titwood-based club who held the initiative with a 7-6 advantage, but two late set piece counters by Josh Cairns secured the points for the second placed side.

Kelburne looked to have the points already in the bag when they romped into a four goal lead in the opening 13 minutes, Chris Caldwell scored a hat-trick after seven while Michael Bremner got the other.

A double from Clydesdale`s Chris McFadden brought the score back to 4-2 by the interval, with Fraser Hirst and McFadden again levelling the match half way through the second half. Cairns and Bremner made it 6-4 for Kelburne but two goals from Ali Richmond and Hirst again put the Glasgow side into a slender lead for the first time in the contest. But it was Cairns who had the final say to give his side the belated three points.

The Paisley side confirmed their second place spot with a bizarre 6-6 draw with Dundee Wanderers in their second outing of the day. The outdoor champions were 3-1 up at the break courtesy of a hat-trick of set-piece conversions by Cairns while Sean Dowie got the Taysiders` only counter from the spot.

In the second half Kelburne raced into a commanding 6-1 lead through Gary Maitles, Adam Bain and Bremner, but then the wheels came off. In the final seven minutes the Dundonians scored the required five goals for a share of the points, Fergus Sandison was the hero with a quick-fire four while Francis Mulgrew got the other. The point won confirmed Wanderers fourth place status, now a point ahead of Clydesdale.

Four-times champions Inverleith completed a five-game winning sequence with a commanding 7-3 win over Hillhead to finish the league part of the championship in third spot. The Edinburgh side were only 3-2 ahead at the interval, their scorers were Stuart Hatton, Paul Taylor and Patch Christie with Andrew Hilton and Ewan Campbell replying for Hillhead.

But the second half belonged to Inverleith with both Christie and Hatton completing their hat-tricks while Ross Jamieson got Hillhead`s consolation.

Inverleith started their day with a comfortable 8-2 win over Clydesdale, a result that relegated the Glasgow club out of the top four on goal difference from Dundee Wanderers.

Inverleith captain Patch Christie again led from the front with five of the eight goals. The first half looked to be heading for a goalless conclusion at the break, but almost inevitably it was Christie who broke the deadlock with a belated strike.

However, the Edinburgh side upped their game in the second half, Christie scored four more with Stuart Hatton, Stephen Dick and Murray Fotheringahm also pitching in. Clydesdale`s consolations came from McFadden and Hirst.

Earlier in the day Dundee Wanderers joined Clydesdale and Inverleith on the nine point mark with a 7-5 win over Grange in their opening match. Frank Ryan opened for the Edinburgh side in 14 minutes, but by the interval the Taysiders were 2-1 up through Callum Ross and Francis Mulgrew.

Luke Cranney levelled for Grange but Wanderers went two ahead through Sean Dowie from the spot and Fergus Sandison. Back came Grange in this ding-dong affair, Cranney again and Andy Graham were on target. The points were secured for the Dundee side with further strikes by Bobby Ralph and Sandison again for a 6-4 lead. Cranney pulled another back for his own hat-trick, then a late penalty corner from Ralph restored the two goal advantage for Wanderers.

Hillhead secured their second victory of the campaign with a 5-4 win over bottom side Edinburgh University. The Glasgow side seemed to have the contest well won with a 5-1 lead in the second half but then allowed the students back into proceedings with three goals in the final ten minutes, yet just managed to hang on to the three points.

Grange recorded their first win of the campaign with a 6-3 win over the Edinburgh students in a bottom-of-the-table confrontation. Cranney was Grange`s chief striker with four second half goals while Ryan picked up a couple. Tim Miller scored twice for the students with Matthew White got the other, but the result leaves them with no points from their seven outings.

Jang's the man

KUALA LUMPUR: Penalty corner specialist Jang Jong-hyun was on fire to hand Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club (KLHC) their first-ever final appearance in the Tan Sri P. Alagendra Cup.

The South Korean, last year’s top scorer in the league with 16 goals, netted two goals to help KLHC beat Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) 3-1 in the semi-finals at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

Joshua Pollard gave KLHC the lead in the 11th minute but UniKL drew level through Faridzul Afiq Mohamed in the 23rd.

KLHC were awarded a penalty stroke in the 41st minute after UniKL goalkeeper David Harte was caught for an infringement in the semi circle. Jong-hyun then cooly flicked the ball past the Irish keeper.

Jong-hyun later scored his second off a penalty corner in the 55th minute.

KLHC face defending champions Terengganu in the final today.

Jang Jong-hyun.

Terengganu, powered by penalty corner expert Gonzalo Peillat of Argentina, struggled to beat TNB-Thunderbolt 3-1 in the other semi-final.

Peillat gave Terengganu the lead in the first minute off a penalty corner but Thunderbolt equalised in the 13th through Azril Misron.

Terengganu regained the lead off a field goal by Joaqin Menini two minutes later before Peillat converted his second goal in the 51st minute.

KLHC will be out to seek revenge as they were outplayed by Terengganu 2-7 in the semi-finals last year.

KLHC coach Lim Chiow Chuan said that Pollard just arrived hours before the match but combined well with the other players.

“It was a tough game and we settled well towards the end and never gave up.

“It was a good win and we’re excited to move into the final.”

Chiow Chuan added they cannot afford to give away penalty corners in the final as Terengganu have Peillat in their stable.
