SA hockey teams set for a reality check at Indoor World Cup

Cape Town — South Africa's men's and women's teams are set for a reality check at the FIH (International Hockey Federation) Indoor World Cup, which starts on Sunday in Pretoria, at the Heartfelt Arena.

The Indoor National Team has gone through several transitions over the past few years, and today, on the eve of the Indoor World Cup, their roster looks quite different than the one that won the bid at the 2021 Indoor Pan American Championships.

KUALA LUMPUR: Reigning world champions Germany are among the top teams that will be invited for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh in July.

A total of 32 have been selected for the 2023 GB Women's Elite Development Programme (EDP) squad. England, Wales and Scotland have representation within the playing group and additionally, six athletes currently studying outside of the United Kingdom have been named as reserves.

Indian men’s hockey have pressed the ‘overdrive’ button not largely for the disappointing 9th place finish at the 15th World Cup, but more for who would take over from exiting Indian chief coach Graham Reid. Quite obviously, taking up the role of India chief coach is an highly demanding job given the sky-high fan expectations that had only accelerated after the historic 2021 Tokyo Olympic bronze medal win. Several names are floating around, but no one is sure who is actually applying for the vacant post for which Hockey India has advertised on its website.





Enough is enough, replicate European hockey leagues or be prepared for more failures

An eventful Jan has finally ended. With the culmination of the Hockey World Cup, Europe has again shown the world that to rule any sport, all it takes is the right intent; the continent swept 1-2-3 with Germany coming out as winners, Belgium finishing second, and the Netherlands ending third.

Humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers continues staying true to its name by being the gift that keeps on giving. Founder and chairperson Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, joined by Proteas netball star Phumza Maweni, officially opened a brand-new netball and hockey field with artificial turf on Wednesday at Sir Lowry’s Pass Village Primary School in Sir Lowry’s Pass, 53km outside the Cape Town CBD.
